Before I got married, actually when I realized that the gentleman and I were heading towards a steady relationship, I told him let us open a savings account for the household. He said no. I decided to save for myself. Thirty years after I am now retired, marriage on the rocks, but I saved enough to last me for two lifetimes. I still engage in saving and have roped in the younger of my two sons in the saving habit. The older of the two has not been taking my advice. I would be wanting for nothing after divorce because I had the foresight to save my own money, just in case! Great advice Fumi! Don't depend on the man's money!! Set aside your own.

My dad was the provider. My mom stayed home. My father gave my mother money to go to the market every week for groceries. He gave her let's say $100. My mom clipped coupons like crazy. Well all those years the money she saved with the coupons is what she stashed away. I never knew about it until I was older. Mother had a nice savings account from those coupon clippings. Every little bit adds up

Thank you for this talk. I make good money in oil & gas and my fiance wanted me to quit my job so he can be "The Man". I refused so I had to let him go plus he was a chauvinist and want me home to be the baby maker and maid. I would never put myself in a situation where I have to ask a man for money no matter how much he says he loves me and the kids. Mad day will always come ladies. Make sure you can take care of yourself and your kids when it does. You have the power when you don't need a man.

THISSS!!! 💯 NEVER give up your independence!! Work and have YOUR OWN, maintain yourself so that when you meet someone you are with them because you WANT to be, not because you HAVE to be. And you can walk away (or show them the door) without worry, should it ever come to that. My husband and I both make 6 figures, but I make approximately 32% more than him so if something was to happen, my daughter and I would be just fine. My mother raised me to NEVER depend on a man, and my husband 100000% appreciates that about me. He is not treated like an ATM and his wife is his *partner*. And we are raising our daughter with the same strong sense of independence and smart financial management.

Right people don’t think about death. What if the husband never has a retirement account? What if he does but it’s not enough to sustain you for longer than a year or two? It’s best to have your own however I still believe the man should be the main provider. The women are always the main ones to handle take the majority responsibility for the children.

She's still making me smile and her life story is incredible, Although she struggled, having lost her Mom to Cancer at the age of 12, and being the oldest of 9 (the baby was 10 months old in cloth diapers) she never gave up and passed that along to us. She helped raise her siblings and other children as well. My Dad did not want her to work or go to school. She went to school anyway, graduated with a nursing degree and shortly after my Dad was killed. Her strength and her faith in God, showed me who I wanted to be. Her example was a gift, I'm eternally grateful for. It's wonderful to see and hear you giving such gifts to all. So many people are lost in this world and you my darling are a sweet breath of fresh air. Blessings to you and your family. Gladys

Great advice, Ms. Fumi. I grew up as a daughter of Depression Era parents and they taught me to save money from the time I was a child. I can spend it with the best of them but I also saved. I’ve never been married, I worked hard for 47 years, and now I’m retired. My life style isn’t extravagant but, thank God, I’m comfortable. Your advice is SO important. I love how you were able to multi-task and not only tell your story so engagingly but also apply your impeccable make-up and look so fabulous. Loving your channel!! Bless you!!

Thank you for addressing this. So many are trying to live like they are royalty when they may be 1-2 paychecks away from poverty. We (women) have to make sure to save for the “what if” days. I love glam and expensive stuff BUT even if I was Cardi or Kim, I would still be a bit more frugal to secure my security.

But then he actually was the one to say i needed savings if anything should happen to him. And this was his idea, not mine. Thats how i knew he loves me deeply. Fast forward to now, i have savings and also a business he's invested in so i can be busy and make some money.

Real talk, true facts i always believe a woman should be able to stand on her own two feet and not depend on a man for anything if he offers fine but to be financially independent is the most liberating feeling every woman can be proud of.

Wow, this video has resonated with me so much. I've felt so ashamed of the position I am in: broken marriage and I thought I had it all, the beautiful house, nice car, fancy vacation but at the end of the day I really had nothing to truly call my own. Now going back to school and will be finishing soon and I cannot wait for the day when I will feel liberated. I've already told him: his cheating will turn out to be the best thing that has ever happened to be because it would have forced me to truly be the woman I was meant to be. Thank You for Sharing...sometimes there is so much stigma attached to topics like these and it feels great to address it.

Fumi you are so on point with this message. I've told my girlfriends over the years, that every woman needs to have her own savings. I've been independent since the age of 16, and my mother thought me the importance of saving. I got married in my 30's and have two boys. My husband has a very good job, and he has always provided for our family, but I work and contribute to our household as well. You never know what life has in store for you, and it's better to be prepared for the unexpected rather than the unexpected thrusting you into a tailspin. Even though I technically do work I don’t receive a pay check and sometimes I feel like I should be contributing financially. These past 2 months have been rough as far as my marriage goes. I hate that I don’t have the option to just leave because financially I am not secure. It’s a position I put myself in and if I could warn anyone I would say don’t ever get yourself in a relationship where you are dependent financially on the other. I love you Dahling! She worries night and day even though the marriage is stable married 19+ years but I told her to get a part time job atleast since her kids are off to college now and she has some time to spend outside the home. There is security in having some of your own funds - anything can happen to your spouse - not that we pray for bad things but it is good to keep your skills current and have some finances stashed away

I love you auntie Fumi…I am an imported wife from Nigeria, now residing in the States…I must say that you are so lucky to have a husband that pays for everything.. Most women have never experienced such, I know I have never.. When I first arrived in the States, my now ex wanted me to immediately start working to start paying bills. I told him I wanted to go to school, he said he didn’t bring me to U.S to go to school…. the rest of the 25 years of my life with him was SLAVERY..! I never did go to school… I have to actually divorce him for me to even have control of my own money…! But thank God, I’m free now. My kids are all adults and I’m basically FREE from his bondage and slavery and I’m very happy. Mine was no marriage, it was slavery.. I will say it once again, Auntie Fumi, you got a GOLDEN husband…! Some of us women are never that lucky..! Must I also add that the whole 25 years, the man never knew there’s a kitchen in that house, never cooked not even once..! Fumi you are very blessed 😇

Honey, Any one with common sense knows that those ladies do not mean literally. Any woman born after a certain era already has their own bank accounts/ savings and know that they should have back up for a rainy day. When it comes to marriage, ive noticed that many of these women here who were left high and dry did not marry well or even insured that an alimony was discussed should anything happen.

@@gailainsley6939 It is not only for divorce. It is morally wrong to be a parasite or leacher depending on a man or even the woman to provide everything for the family. Such stress can kill the provider easily. I have seen it happen. No matter how small or how rich the partner one should have not only savings but contribute to family.

@@zikaenendu6214 It's not a leech if the woman takes care of the home and children. In my opinion, men should provide 100% financially and the woman responsible for the home (even if she works as well). The higher class have this dynamic more often and the divorce rate is also lower. It's an even exchange.

I just lost my husband a few months ago unexpectedly. We were only married for 15 months, and he never got around to adding my name to any of his financial affairs ( like I did for him). When he died, there was nothing there for me to live off of. When I say nothing... I mean absolutely nothing. It all went to his previous family, because he didn't remove their names from his paperwork, even though he led me to believe he took care of things, and that I'd be provided for, should something happen to him. I could t believe it! If it wasn't for me having my own savings and assets, and very good friends that helped to provide the cushion I needed to keep me afloat, I don't know where I would be. I learned the following lessons: As a woman... keep saving your own money, even if you're married because tomorrow is not promised, your life can change in the blink of an eye like mine did, and most importantly, sometimes men screw up, and we're left to clean up the mess.

Oh my God thank you for your storytime today. I'm 57 and really needed this. My 1st husband died while serving in the military but my 2nd husband cheated every chance he got. I have 4 step children all born while we were married. I'm still struggling at 57 I don't have a large nest egg thank God I'm able and strong and have a decent job I will be able to depend on me. But if I could tell my 20 year old self anything. Don't tell your man everything, you bring You to the table and your heart is pure, and good and that's what you are able to share. 2 days ago I was asked what I bring to a relationship and I was at a loss for words. However my light shines and draws others in don't down play that. You deserve what you want stop allowing small minds to belittle you. I love you Fumi thank you for your love.

Ok am I reading correctly? Are you saying your husband fathered 4 outside children being that he was married to you at the same time? I mean are the two of you still married? Otherwise, if you're not, although you feel you're struggling independently, at least your efforts and work is just for YOU. If you're still in the marriage, I mean...for what it's worth to stay, no matter what I'm thinking or what anyone else is thinking...I've since come to realize that everyone has to make their own personal choice to stay or go, use the moment of his financial contributions, (no matter how little he contributes), to hoard your own money. Also, you may need to consider getting a side gig or side gigs so that some or all of the side gig money can go to savings and some can go towards your daily livelihood. Good luck.

Start a Creche Maa. My mum started a creche around your age and she's doing well now. its not easy but after some time you would be able to hire people and can be financially stable. You can also invest into a car washing bay at a vantage point. Or start a nanny, maid, or care giver agency. These are things you can do at your age which will require little to no Capital.
