My Mic Rundown for a Jazz Combo

I mixed a fantastic Jazz combo in a church in Antwerp, Belgium.

Oh tell me about it… post covid has been so hectic! My new studio is almost ready so 2024 will bring more video’s and I will have my lessons available online as well. What are other topics you would like to see?

Those SE mics are amazing. I really like Lewitt and Lauten as well. Good bang for buck.

I use the LA-320 Tube condenser for vocals and it's so sweet. Want the pencil condensers they sound great for overheads or acoustics and cheap. Also the snare mic and the LA-220 FET condensers are great and scary cheap. The Lewitt REX dual capsule kick mic it's dynamic and condenser. @@MasterclaesVideos

@Masterclass Thanks for the mic rundown. 👍 There are so many great mics to choose from now...both old and new. What interface/preamps and/or mixer are you running everything through and recording with? And, of course, it would be great if you will post a short clip of the audio from this performance. 😉 Cheers

Hey, thank you for the reaction! Indeed, having many mics to choose from makes me very flexible to achieve the sound I have in mind. I am using a Yamaha QL desk with Tio converters. But for lead vocal I used an ATI Pro6 channel strip which is fantastic! Are you a live or studio engineer?

@MasterclaesVideos I'm just a drummer/percussionist and saxophonist with a modest home studio, not a professional engineer, but my day job has allowed me to "play" and experiment with a lot of great microphones, preamps and recording gear. :) I'm particularly a fan of good ribbon mics, but as you know, every mic has its unique and special properties that make it ideal for use with particular instruments and either live or studio applications, etc. Thanks for the insights into what you are using and what you prefer to use for your craft. The Yamaha QL Desk mixing consoles look to be very capable and well designed piece of kit. And that ATI PRO6 channel strip is somewhat of a Unicorn for vocal capture and processing. :) Too bad those gems are no longer available. Cheers
