Professor, sir, I just want you to know that you have helped millions gain an intuition for things they never could have imagined possible, and I, amongst many many others, am truly indebted to you. Thanks a lot for all the help you have provided when my teachers couldn't answer my question "WHY" countless time. Love from Singapore :)

Angular velocity can be defined for any angular motion, which may be periodic (maybe SHM or no) or may not be periodic. However, angular frequency is only defined for periodic motion. This periodic motion may or may not be SHM. However, this angular frequency is solely defined by the time period (2pi/T) and as time period is characterises ANY periodic motion, angular frequency is constant for ANY periodic motion. The case where angular velocity and angular frequency match is the case of constant circular motion. Angular velocity is a constant as equal angles are covered in equal times. In essence, 2pi angle is covered in T. But this is also a periodic motion and hence the definition angular frequency also applies. As the time period is T, angular frequency is also 2pi/T and it turns out the two quantities are the same. Sir, is my explanation accurate?

As much as I can think, to define angular frequency of a motion , the motion has to be SHM. Can you give example of a Motion which is not SHM but still we can define its Angular Frequency? You wrote, "angular frequency is constant for ANY periodic motion". i'll try to disprove it with an example. eg.= a car moving in a linear path but in periodic motion. I think noone can calculate Angular Frequency of Linear periodic motion.

*simple harmonic motion can be described as the projection along a diameter of uniform circular motion(U.C.M)*.As the reference point in U.C.M completes one revolution the S.H.M complete one cycle as well,so time period and frequency of both U.C.M and S.H.M points are same.Angular frequency is simply the speed of reference point in U.C.M (that is angular speed).Now this is called *angular* frequency of S.H.M to signify it's connection with the U.C.M.

Walter Lewin, Sir I do think there's an indirect connection between the two. Take any SHM and draw an equivalent phasor diagram of the situation... The angulat velocity with with the phasor will be rotating will be EXACTLY the same as angular frequency in magnitude... i guess that's why they have similar symbols too.
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259 6 жыл бұрын
yes, ofcoz there is a connection. The projection of a uniform circular motion on any straight line in the plane of that motion is a SHM. I demonstrate that also in one of my lectures. The fact remains that w_t at a given moment of time in a pendulum is only related to w in cos(wt) in a very very opaque matter which causes great confusion. theta_t=theta_max*cos(wt). w_t=-w*theta_max*sin(wt). brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

It's amazing Walter. So basically we can say that the angular velocity is used to describe the angular motion in the same way as x, y or z is used for linear motions. However, the angular frequency is just a shorthand way of measuring "timing" in cyclic processes (indeed the frequency of this periodic phenomena), and therefore in general terms they have nothing to do with each other (only if there is a completely linear dependence with a constant angular velocity). Thank you very much, and of course I will remember for the rest of my life this lecture when I have rotational problems to solve. Thank you one more time my friend ;)!

Hi Professor Irwin It is great to see you again. Just want to let you know that I was watching a lecture about kinematics in 1Dimension also in 2 Dimension. The course is on mechanics on edX from Rice University, when the lecturer measured the displacement by a meter stick, he didn't give the uncertainty at all. He just had the length he measured but no uncertainty. You always say that the measurement is meaningless without the uncertainty. You are looking great my friend and take care.😊😊😊
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259 6 жыл бұрын
That's how physics is taught at high schools.The Rice Professor is clearly a poor teacher (even incompetent); edX should not have offered this course. However, edX may not have know this.
@TejasKd221B
@TejasKd221B 6 жыл бұрын
Prof Lewin.... The person teaching that course is Prof Jason Hafner. I do not think it is right on your part to call him incompetent. I am a huge fan of yours but I really like Prof Hafner, too. I learnt Electricity and Magnetism from his course and it was absolutely fantastic. Just because he didn't tell the uncertainty in measurement, I do not think you can conclude that he is a poor teacher. It is like saying, if a student gets ONE problem wrong, he is incompetent. That is not a rational conclusion, dear sir.
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259 6 жыл бұрын
At Hafner's request, I did a video for him that he showed to his students. It's in my You Tube Channel. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/guCEkryLld6ndo0.html OK I will not call him incompetent but I will call him sloppy, and chances are that he will continue to be sloppy when he makes measurements.
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259

I know Jason Hafner. He once asked me to do a video for him to show his students. It's now on my KZfaq channel. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/guCEkryLld6ndo0.html As far as making measurements without uncertainties, I will call him sloppy and chances are that he will continue to be sloppy whenever he makes measurements. He thereby fails to teach his students one of *THE MOST IMPORTANT* concepts of all of Physics.
