I had no idea that there was an elongated tortoise still living here at the Kamp even though the rest of the herd had moved away a few years ago. This guy must have hatched and made his own way surviving in Lumpy's enclosure all this time until Kate discovered him. I'd love to see if Slinky will accept him in his habitat seeing as they are both Asian species.

I have a Russian tortoise that some kids let out of his outdoor enclosure in 2013. Last July I found him beside my barn! He had survived snow, freezing rains, drought, floods, and record high and low temps! He’s safely confined to never be lost again! The resiliency of these creatures is mind blowing.

I have a female Russian tortoise and I live in Maryland where it can get very cold during the winter and very hot during the summer but Maryland is a cakewalk compared to the extreme temperatures in Russia. I'm not surprised at all that your Russian tortoise survived. A friend of mine here in Maryland also breeds Russian tortoises and they live outside for the entire year with absolutely NO issues. He has never had so much as a respiratory infection in any of his tortoises.

This is such a perfect display of how Tortoises have survived for so long as a species and also why they're so long lived individually. They really do have the perfect defence mechanism with being able to just disappear into their shell and leave a predator as intelligent and finely tuned as a monitor lizard completely stumped to the point where they simply get bored and leave. Genuinely some of the most incredible and underrated animals on the planet.

That's an awesome discovery at the Kamp! Seems like the elongated tortoise must be a pretty hardy animal if it survived for probably multiple years independently within the habitats that the kamp naturally provides. Sounds like it could be a great idea to introduce the tortoise to more of its kind. It'd be interesting to see how it reacts to being surrounded by a group of others like him, like it was interesting to see the interaction between Slinky and the tortoise. If this one you found was basically on its own for years potentially, could be quite a change to be with a group suddenly. But maybe having a group would make him happier.

The difference between a curly-tail and a tortoise is that a curly-tail can run away on facing Slinky, whereas a tortoise couldn’t. The second difference is size. A curly-tail can hide in a tiny crevice, safe from Slinky, but a tortoise if surprised from behind, will lose a hind limb before it is even aware that Slinky is stalking it.

That giant bamboo is awesome! Good border plant. Don’t think it would grow in Ohio though.

I think it's best for the turtle to do what you concluded, house him with others of his species. Something for those complaining about housing with slinky: slinky is a meat eater. Why is this tortoises life more important then Slinky's food outside of monteray value and cultural associations of turtles? The turtle was 'free' for Kenan, he didn't know it existed. Him putting it with slinky as cleanup is not much differences then isopods as cleanup crew for a creature they may snack on them, outside of turtles likely being more intelligent then isopods? If he had decided to house the turtle there, it'd help maintain slinky's enclosure. Maybe it also add some enrichment for being something slinky could engage with. As a turtle, it can hide and protect itself, so guessing would nit be in continuous stress in such a large enclosure. It hid itself for years. However, for a somewhat social species, a lone turtle does not seen ideal for cleanup crew . But he's is cute and it's cool he gets to go live with some companions. It just frustrates me how hypocritical we'll tend to be about life, valuing some life over other for fairly arbitrary reasons, then using that to make angry comments

All I can think about is how Slinky pulled that snake through such a small hole and ate him. Slinky would've ate that poor tortoise, one appendage at a time.

I don't want to be a debbie downer but I know you have Coral snakes in FL. I also know they like to hide under leaf debris. In the beginning, looking for the tortoise...reaching your hand in debris, really made me nervous. You know your landscaping but please be careful.
