I grew up with Simon and Garfield . This was the last song I learned on the piano. It was also my wedding song. However this version is way better than the original. So Hyang projects more feeling in this song than anyone including the original.

I am 75 know the original they took to different paths here a ballad and gospel so one is sad which So hyang sang at the start but then turned it to up lifting feel a song of hope .So you can't compare the two they are different.

I LOVE MOM!! LOVE her thoughtful analysis. Many artists, including Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley have covered this song. While the original is a classic, in my opinion, the PHENOMENAL So Hyang's version the best one. I totally understand and respect mom's opinion. The fact that you include her in your reactions, indicates she did a GREAT job raising a GREAT son. Always be good to your mother.

when I first heard this I was greatly impressed but a bit offended that she took the Simon version I so loved and made it so much better. How dare she hahaha. Now I love Sohyang and think she is the best singer ever. Sohyang's version of I Will Always Love You is more contained as your mom put it so well. Or have your mom check out Misty (the jazz classic) by Sohyang! (Begin Again 2020 version)

I read one reactor said that if he ever cuts a record, he hopes that Sohyang would never make a cover version of it. His reason - she will make him sound so amateurish!

It is _very_ nice to see a mother and son be able to experience So Hyang together! So Hyang was actually about 37 when she sang this song, and she is currently 43 (but 44 in Korean cultural terms). She is still absolutely gorgeous! Simon and Garfunkel started out in the 1950s under the stage names "Tom and Jerry"--the same as the two cats in the old cartoon!

I agree that Sohyang is so high in her emotion in this one that I cannot follow her. She leaves me behind, listening to her incredible runs and riffs, admoring her technical skill, but as an outsider.

This was 2015 so she was about 37 here. She is 43 now in Western culture (44 in Asian culture) Your mum might like to know that Sohyang is a gospel singer and that this is also her own arrangement and that rearranging the song of choice was a part of this show. The original had a folk rock sound but Sohyang turned it into a gospel song. It's not meant to be a copy of the original but a fresh take on it. I think maybe your mum was hoping more for the original.

@@grapeace When I was young (since I was a student), I remember wanting to master the Bridge over Troubled Water with a piano solo, and enjoyed it practiced Until I can memorize a piece of music and play it freely. 😊 Of course, I know the beautiful meaning of the Bridge over Troubled Water ... Nostalgic 😊 At that time, Prince Richard Clayderman as a pianist, was popular in Tokyo …and Japan media…etc.😊 ◼️The new one certainly looks good ... But what they learned from history for a long time ... grudges 1000 years That's it ... They misunderstand anti-Japanese as patriotism because of their pride ... They have this kind of history education ... Nothing… Useless for the future with their country ... It's a pity that someone will always break the bridge of friendship to the future 😊 If it was really sincerely to each other the purpose of mutual friendship, maybe now like this ... From our point of view So new learning would be great for them ...? Sorry. The reason for the best people in the world ... Looking down on Japan was the joy of society as a whole and the pride of the people 😊 The media in their country is said to have a higher degree of freedom than Japan ... but The content is the same as the government policy ... and Korea is wonderful. Does Japan still have an ambition to invade South Korea without reflecting on the past? Are there people or media who really say this? Then I was busy for a while and forgot … After that, I remembered and heard about the current activities of BoA so… I was lost interest. Now, when I think about it, she was the first bridge between Korea and Japan ... ◼️Well, I'm sorry. I'll tell you the truth. It might be beautiful ...but No matter how wonderful & beautiful Korean songs are, nothing appeals or nothing touch to my heart. BoA… was the first bridge between Korea and Japan ... ... Thanks for introducing Sohyang's to your mom. She is a wonderful music lover. Completely understand her comment on the original spirit she resonated with. Clearly the original version gives her special feelings but she also was quite articulate about Sohyang's singing skill and interpretation of the song. For the right context, this stage is part of a singing contest and the arrangement of the song inevitably reflects the competitive nature of the performance. Great video. BTW, I also enjoy the original version from Simon and Garfunkel. However, this rendition speaks louder to my personal experience. The diversity in interpretation and adaption of music is what makes music the art we love.

I think this was the best reaction i've seen so far for this song. Sohyang's version is very powerful with her passion, love, faith..and i absolutely love it. However the overwhelming power of the S&G original can be matched by no one and honestly i think this version of sohyang is the best it can get as an interpretation.

Loved, loved her analysis - very honest and observant. She's a pro vocal coach perhaps? very much on point. It helps to note that the performance was for a competition and (show-off of vocal abilities) would be in context. I also agree with the mom's opinion that it took some shine off the song itself, inner control and restraint says much about musicianship of an artist. I've been hooked on Sohyang's unique freaky talent this year and had come across a song she did which I adore- it was just her in a subdued environment with an icy chandelier in winter, and a piano & acoustic guitar. She kept it very low key, and vulnerable and honest, a side I've never seen of her until that video. The song was called "Stay" , I think she wrote it herself. There's a music video but I much preferred the live performance under the 'Begin Again Korea" TV series which has a completely different feel. Check it out and possibly the mom can look at it one day and provide feedback too =)

I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel’s music. They are very talented. I also liked their Bridge Over Trouble Water. I always felt it was just easy listening but never heartfelt. As a result, I never actually fully paid much attention to its lyrics. But with Sohyang’s version, even though she sang a very soft easy listening version in the beginning, her much more powerful sound with the rest of the song demands attention and pay attention to what the song’s underlying message is and therefore I can feel the impact of the message much more than the Simon and Garfunkel version. I would say Simon’s version is for putting me to sleep while Sohyang’s version can move me to tears and definitely not something you would listen before going to bed.

Loved your mom's reaction. Like many moms, she's opinionated, and she already knew the original plus I could tell she seemed to have some music background. She came in softening her approach to support her son, but I bet she wasn't just gonna be easily impressed, because hey, this was Simon and G. Even her expressions changed within the first 20 secs. Which makes her reaction that much more enjoyable to watch, and more precious. Great video.

I agree with mum. Sohyangs voice is phenomenal and stunningly beautiful - as is her master class level technique, but when she went off into gospel style and all those belting passages and vocal ornamentations she left me behind. The original still embedded in the heart. Please react - together - to Sohyangs wonderful performance of the traditional Korean Folk Song: Arirang Alone.

I ve watched lots of reaction videos for sohyang but this is the most honest opinion for sohyang's BOTW as your mother knows the original song. thank you!!! I love the original version and I used that for my wedding few years ago but I love to hear sohyang's version more in my playlist. (specially when I wanna feel more power and soul and female version of this song) different feelings different choices I guess just one thing that mind you tho, this stage is a competition that you have to give audience huge impression as much as you can, so you mom probably felt that sohyang little bit overcooked it. (my mom's generation also felt that same) for me however, this is the best cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water Ive ever heard in my life. anyway thank you again for the reaction.

you should listen to the original, and also check out Paul Simon, his album Graceland, after he became a solo artist separated from Art Garfunkel. Their song “sound of silence” you should listen to, in addition to Disturbed cover of it, which you may have heard. These are classics.

I also listened to Simon & Garfunkel a lot when I was young. When I first watched this show, the feeling of the song was different because it’s arranged a lot. However, both original song and this song by Sohyang are good. It doesn't have much of an original feel, but it was a song that reminded me a lot of the past. We have to respect mom's opinion to acknowledge the differences and listen to old songs. I also occasionally listen to the original song (Bridge over troubled water), and I recommend it to young people these days. For reference, I've been a fan of Sohyang for 10 years.

I understand your mom's take on the song. The original style of the song was layed back and had personal connection. What you mom knows is the lyrics were so well written that it was amenable to many different styles and interpretations. I love both the original and Sohyang's version. When I need what each version supplies I listen to that one. I don't think your mom was ready for So-hyang's power and range. Fun watching her because she brings her honest reaction.

I agree that the original is the best and I don’t usually like remake versions but this one was awesome since you can feel her pain and sorrow knowing she had the cancer and still having to deal with health issues and she is very religious. Best wishes to Sohyang!

Sohyang’s has been a gospel singer for over 20 years. She sings to comfort people. The main reason why this particular rendition is so grandiose is because it’s was performed on a very popular survival/competition TV show for professional singers.

Mom would love So Hyang's cover of 'Misty' , which is brilliant. Well done! I am older than your mom and knew Simon and Garfunkel very well. I love the original and along with 'The Boxer', and 'The Sound of Silence', this song was my other favorite. But when you have a singer like So Hyang, I think it is almost a must to have her showcase her vocal control, range, perfect pitch, and powerful belting along with her arrangement of this song. The song, really, after 50 years, becomes a different song entirely, with So Hyang, which I personally love. But that is my opinion. She does the same with 'Lean On Me' (originally a Bill Withers song and then a Michael Bolton hit). She is such a vocal beast that I would not want her to be completely subdued either. Anyway, that is just my opinion...

Sohyang did a phenomal job. She is extremely talented. But Bridge Over Troubled Water was an important message confined in a song. And somewhere along the way, Sohyang forgot to deliver the message. Instead she gave a perfect performance of the song... I still get chills listening to the original by Simon & Garfunkel. Shout out to your mother. She's very wise...

There's no point re-singing the original version then I might as well listen to the original group, Simon and Garfunkel. This is a competition so one needs to re-interpret the song in another way to not come across as re-hashing a song which almost everyone would have heard. It would just mean you've perfected copying how the previous artiste has sung but no element of surprise.

You know the song but don't know it's Paul Simon and not Simon Paul. Also this was a vocal competition which is the reason she had to showcase her voice.
