South Africa is very modern and well developed. The Sandton neighborhood of Johannesburg is upscale. Where SA falls short is the disparity between white neighborhoods and black neighborhoods. Crime is very real. You have to be super vigilant about protecting your money from thieves and other shady types.

Your budget in Johannesburg is definitely lower than the other cities you've gone to. It's possible to reduce it by at least R7000 though if you opt for a cheaper apartment. As for cooking... that's the pits. I wouldn't do it either if I didn't have to.

If you don't already own a home in the US...do it! The home could be a means of you generating passive income through having renters in addition to your KZfaq income. I'm sure you've already thought about this as you're in real estate but I'm a huge advocate for folks our age setting ourselves up for long term wealth and expat life lol. Rice, meat, gravy, other relishes & salads. Or subscribe for monthly food deliveries (much cheaper, tastier & healthier). Plan entertainment in advance.

Maybe you would've saved more money if you had a microwave in your apt (I was wondering if that chicken was done..glad you didn't get super-sick!). Not sure what kind of frozen meals they have in the grocery stores there, but I'm sure it would've been a lot less than eating out. You have to have a decent place to stay, so that's unavoidable. To cut down on transportation and bar tabs, maybe entertain at home instead of going out: Do a "bring-your-favorite-booze, bring your favorite buddy party"? You drink for free, and meet some new people. I challenge you to cut that down to $1,999😊 I would LOVE to see you in Thailand! A friend of mine balled out over there for next to nothing while living in a luxury spot!

Mr. Juilian, you are spending mucho gusto money, especially on food! Try finding prepared food that you can eat for several days or freeze.
