My Dad ignored me for 18 years then kicked me out. I don't hate him cause I was never hungry. He didn't have a father and his mother worked 2 jobs during WW2 so he never saw her. He had NO idea how to parent me. We were strangers all our lives. He's gone now of old age. I think I feel worse for him. He missed my whole childhood. I got out of the Navy. He and I remained strangers. Right before he died we spoke on the phone. He told me he loved me for the 2nd time in my whole life and said he was sorry for not being a more emotional guy. I told him I loved him and it was okay. Any anger evaporated. He was dysfunctional, he missed ever knowing me. I respected him but I didn't LOVE him like I loved my Mom. I felt. Nothing when he died. He stopped being a Dad decades before that. He was a Dad to my sister and good for her. We lived VERY different lives. SO we don't ever talk cause I would just hurt her spoiled brat feelings and I don't want to hurt her. The gulf between us is too far after 43 years. She got married and never lived life on her own. Never starved and thinks she's badly done to. Entitlement issues galore and thinks poor people are just lazy. She's 1 of the white Karen's everybody is pissed off at. Know it all pretend Christian who thinks the poor people are the problem. 😖

The father is the more accomplished character in these scenes. His bumbling parenting style and awkward but funny reactions make up for the almost absent, detached and dry mother who doesn't even function as a supporting character. They obviously did not succeed in building a believable mother character and could've done without one as the actor who portrays the father is good enough to support both roles.

I grew up with christian parents who were very strict and obsesive with my sexual development growing up, they would always monitor me and interfeer with my privacy in an overprotective way which was traumatizing for me. A dad like Jim's dad is something many people wish they had, but I think it's safe to say kids with christian parents wished for a dad like that the most.
