This instrument is called "hurdy gurdy" and has its roots in the medieval times. It works like a mechanical violin with a wheel bow, that can play bass, melody and rhythm all at once.

@The Garden of Eatin, Malls are being replaced by online shopping, amazon et al, that is capitalism at work, it fills the needs and wants of the consumer, the high overhead costs of large malls can't compete with online merchants.

Considering as they are almost exclusively hand crafted instruments, finding a gurdy luthier is the only way to acquire one, likely from Europe. Thus they are often made to order and customized to the purchaser’s specifications.

Ivan ambition, I found myself wondering what kind of music could/would be performed on a hurdy gurdy if the wheel was spun by a motor and lithium-ion batteries, making both of the musicians' hands available for actually playing the notes!
@donkmeister
@donkmeister 4 жыл бұрын
@@goodun2974 The musician uses control of the wheel for expression, using a battery-driven wheel to free up the cranking hand could take that control away from the musician... It would be possible to use a pedal to control some aspects but it would be like asking a violinist to use a pedal to control their bow.

But if you modify it... you void the warrantee. ........ I hate it when people say that. I think as an adult I know the risk I take by drilling a hole in a store bought item. .... I almost always modify everything I buy, because the manufacturer and or inventor, almost always stops short of what the item could be if they just put a little more thought into it before they package it up that way.... For instance.... on a GPS navigator , when you already have the address typed into it and it's already providing directions for you.... BUT you decide to stop off at a convenient store to get gas, or something to eat. As soon as you veer off the path to go to the store..... The GPS Navigator won't shut up with how it's recalculating, and how you're going the wrong direction... it just goes crazy..... and they put no button on the unit to hit like a snooze on an alarm so the unit will shut up.. without going into a drop menu finding the volume , and sliding the virtual up and down slide... all this while driving... So the first thing I did was drill a hole init and install a rocker on/off switch.. in line with the speaker... It's low profile and it doesn't look weird or anything. now I can reach down without looking ... and temporarily turn the sound completely off without interfering with the original path of navigation. Just simply turn it back on when I'm done in the store. NOW... why don't the manufactures do that? so I don't have to... It would be a great feature.. but that's what I mean by they always stop short.

@@trevorforrester3142 , yeah, I'm with ya! I have modified lots of my own tools and devices over the years, such as putting longer cords on my older power tools, adding power indicator lights or LEDs or illuminated switches to electrical devices and power strips that don't have them, adding modular power-inlet jacks to devices that were formerly hardwired or only ran off of batteries, changing knobs to types that aree easier to see and use, and so on. A mute button on my wife's GPS would be helpfull, especially when she calls me from the car and the device is yammering away in the background (a mute button on my wife might occasionally be useful, and I'm sure she'd say the same about me!). By the way, I truly hate how the power adapter jacks on virtually *everything* these days has been changed to the same type of Mini USB jacks that we find on our smartphones. Those flimsy jacks, especially when used on a GPS device that might suddenly slide off the dash or that gets unplugged frequently and stashed under the seat or in the trunk to deter theft, are all too easy to break from frequent connection cycles or when the cable gets yanked on, and nearly impossible to swap out or repair (even for me, an electronics technician with excellent soldering skills!). I secured the cable and connector to the back of the GPS with self- adhesive tie-wrap buttons and cable ties, so that the worst that can happen is the power cable fails from repeated flexing rather than the jack on the device failing. I wish manufacturers of Audio-Video amplifiers and receivers and so on would design the HDMI inputs with a sleeve or tunnel surround the jacks so that the HDMI connector can't be torqued sideways. Those connectors become intermittent or fail frequently and replacing them is nearly impossible. It's just a terrible design. Planned obsolescence that causes so many devices to be thrown out prematurely, clogging landfills and wasting fossil fuel energy and mined materials.

@@donkmeister , perhaps.....but at one time, organists used their feet to operate bellows that pushed air through the pipes; until motors and blowers were developed and organs were built using them, or retrofitted with them. Then we got electronic organs with Oscillator circuits, and rotating Leslie speakers*.....I'm not trying to detract from the charm of completely manually-operated acoustic instruments, just saying that there is always room for innovation. By the way, the first time I saw someone playing a nyckelharpa, I said "what the hell is that?!". A pretty cool instrument, really.... * A Hammond organ through a Leslie, in the hands of someone who knows how to use it, is one of the most awesome sounds you will ever hear, IMHO.

My mother was born in New York City in 1912. When I was a child in the American midwest during the '50s, she'd occasionally reminisce with fascination about "the hurdy-gurdy man" who would busk in the city streets of her youth. For her it was a potent evocation of a time and place, and exotic and foreign to me.

had always heard of the hurdy gurdy but knew nothing of the instrument..as a craftsman i can only say her instruments are remarkable..the woods the color..the fabrication of the various bridges etc..must have taken many many hours to craft such an instrument and anything that you have that many hours of hands on crafting is going to its own spiritual mojo.as for paddy i must say she is brilliantly talented and quite possibly one of the most radiant young woman that i have ever cast my eyes upon..her beauty and her talent along with presence and comfort while performing makes her a most rare gem indeed. and i like that she has taken an obviously uncommon instrument and is pushing the boundaries of it's possibility's in tonality and performance

These comments are fucking stupid. You're in a video watching a female musician playing an instrument and explaining it, and *a ton* of people is commenting how cute she is. Being a female musician in KZfaq must suck ass, considering this crap only happens to them. And if she's cute I guess compliments could be alright for her, but people can be very disrespect towards not so cute women in KZfaq... No need to comment on physical appearance on a video that is strictly about music! Act like you would with your own gender: this is no Tinder and you guys certainly look stupid to many of us, so there's nothing to gain commenting this type of unnecessary shit.
@fakshen1973

That's an overreaction on your behalf. Finding someone beautiful is nothing to be ashamed of. Finding someone's voice relaxing to hear, is not a bad thing. It's nothing to criticize. Here's a hint. People can be both talented and beautiful. It's no zero-sum game. Finding a person attractive does not diminish his or her talents. Let's relax and remember that we are human. Attraction to other humans is pretty normal.
@microondasletal
@microondasletal 6 жыл бұрын
No overreaction. She is cute, like many other women in KZfaq can be, but no shit most young females are tired of this behaviour; I repeat, they are the only gender receiving this comments on their feed every time, and you can check that and make a direct comparison. Is it bad? Yes, not because telling somebody how beautiful she/he is is bad itself, but because you're prioritizing physical appearance over the actual content that she/he put effort into! When this type of comments become generalised, an objectifying relation starts to grow: Many people like (and share their thoughts about it) or not a video whether they like or not how the female KZfaqr looks, which is absurd and frustrating for the person behind the content shown. So, obviously finding a person attractive doesn't diminish his or her talents, I've never said that. I said it is in certain contexts that physical compliments become more visible than actual compliments for the content created, which *may* occasionally make the creator feel worthless in what they do. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now I will proceed to demonstrate why your last 2 sentences ("Let's relax and remember that we are human. Attraction to other humans is pretty normal.") are a fallacy (wow I really look like a pedant person saying this, but, whatever, take it as you may, sounding like this wasn't the original idea). a) First off, you could try to prove any inmoral theory by basing it in those sentences. Exaggerated example on a fictional dialogue: -Raping is bad +Let's relax and remember that we are human. Attraction to other humans is pretty normal. b) And second, that is an statement so empty we can recicle it and use it with literally everything. Another example: 1. -We shouldn't piss on the garden +Let's relax and remember that we are animals. Pissing on gardens is pretty normal. 2. -We shouldn't eat our babies +Let's relax and remember that we are mammals. Eating our babies is pretty normal. 3. -We should obey the law +Let's relax and remember that we are living beings. Disobeying imposed laws is pretty normal. What do I mean by these examples? That, attending to our nature, we can categorise as normal many unusual behaviours that don't work for us nowadays. Why? Because we are moral and rational individuals, we know that we should follow the law, we shouldn't eat our babies nor pissing on anyone's garden. But because we are rational and moral individuals, we also know we should develop coherent thinking; I wouldn't do anything to anyone that I wouldn't want for myself, nor would I believe in some kind of equality or social justice (these words are very denigrated by our social context, but most of us all believe in them some way or another or we wouldn't even live in democracies or any form os society at all) and practice the oposite. I'm not saying you should feel the same by looking at a man than what you do when you look at women, just that we should (and it's not moralising in any way if there's some agreement in what I've just said before) not do something to someone that you wouldn't want done to yourself. So, imagine you're a female creator, you've got 80k followers and *a ton* of them (even if it were just a 10%, which it isn't) are only commenting on your appearance rather than focusing on what you're trying to show. Would you like to be in that situation? I personally wouldn't and I'm a man. This is not a complete tragedy, it can be solved, but we have yet to gain some perspective and act accordingly. c) Obviously, attraction to other humans is completely normal, I wasn't critizising that fact...
