More Stereo Gear Please

Күн бұрын

This is my new 3-shelf audio/stereo rack for my music room to replace a stereo cabinet I've had for seven years. The rack was designed to fit in a limited existing space between my KEF 104/2 speakers and to allow for the display the beauty of my stereo gear and for ease of swapping gear (amps, preamps, CD player, cassette decks, and tuners) from time-to-time. My friend and neighbor was kind enough to allow me to work with him in his garage/shop to build the rack. I later sanded and finished the shelves and legs in my garage. I provide some simple sketches of the front and side views so that others might use them to create/build their own rack, maybe longer and/or wider. The shelves are purchased from Home Depot and are birch butcher block counter tops cut to size. The legs were planed and cut from a slab of African mahogany my friend had on hand.

As a vintage gear collector myself, you have a nice set up. Your neighbor is a kind kind man! His work is fantastic. You should be on AudioKarma if you’re not already.

My favorite audio rack has always been a striped upright piano. Pull the top and bottom facings and the entire key assembly. If a speaker touches the piano, you need to dampen the strings.

Very nice rack and very nice job. Although I really cringed when he crosscut the shelves agains the rip fence. That is a procedure that is generally considered to be unsafe. If I missed an offset block and the miter gauge I apologize. Very nice job. You also have some spectacular components.

Hey Tom, As a former Industrial Arts teacher you are absolutely right about the crosscut of the shelves. I don’t remember an offset block. I didn’t say anything since it wasn’t my shop. Thanks for your nice comments! PS, I’ve bought more gear since then😳

Good job! Nothing like wood expertly done. Nice gear as well. I would strongly recommend though you try other interconnect cables. Try van den hul or analysis plus in the 200-400 range. Let your VPI sing.

Very attractive. I appreciate the material choices. Did you consider appropriate sized rubber or polyurethane casters? I would think they would make it easier to clean behind?

Thank you! I did think about casters but I didn’t want to see the wheels below. I opted for some furniture sliding pads instead. Thanks for watching 👍

Thank you so much for taking the time to create and post this video. Coincidently, I've begun a very similar build using the same butcher block countertop materials; however, with 2.5 x 2.5 inch oak legs. Your video really helped me visualize the end product. How did you smooth out the edges of the shelves and legs; e.g. sandpaper, router? Great job and thanks again!

Good to hear you found the video useful. Not the most exciting vid with tons of step-by-step detail but gets the point across. We did use a router bit along the top front edge of each shelf and along the edges of the legs. You could just use sandpaper. I surely hope you can share your completed stereo rack when you’re all done! Best to you and thanks for your nice comments👍👍

Your sand paper grits were very high. Aiming to about 1200 for the finish would be better. 100 at the start is way too coarse
