Just an amendment to the Chuwi Larkbox X review. A viewer informed me to try USB-PD (power delivery via USB-C) and it does indeed work. I tested under load without issue. Not sure why it says in the spec it's not supported.

Rob, it's nice to see enthusiasm for a low-end unit , and I agree that it's handsome, though that round black fan input grill does point out the small fan (which I assume is roughly the size most of them use). I'm glad it's a good WiFi/BT card, slightly regret soldered RAM and no expansion (other than to replace the SATA stick with a larger one and those are getting a bit hard to find), but at least 12GB will hold up better than 8GB. Also, I may be wrong about this, but I don't remember another brand that used Win 11 Home rather than Pro. For most people that may not make a difference, but I really do like being able to RDP into the minis I have. Fun review to watch.

Mine came with a VESA bracket. Happy with mine, though the MoreFine looks more 'premium'/less like a big smoke alarm. Using it as a daily driver in the office and can report that it's dealing with Office 365 and cloud solutions quite happily, which I could never say about Intel's earlier budget processors.

I am seriously tempted to buy this just for work. The most demanding thing I do is teach classes online and use Office. It is so cheap, I dont feel I have much to lose. I am tired of turning on my huge massively engergy draining tower everyday. I just want to turn my tower into an emulation arcade machine.

It checks many boxes of what I'm looking for (SATA/NVMe support, USB type C alternate mode for DisplayPort, proper DisplayPort too, Power Delivery compatible, etc.), but what makes me somewhat reticent of getting one is servicing. Not only on the physical side, getting to the upper part (i.e., properly disassembling the unit) seems to be impossible, or at least I have yet to see anyone document how it would be done (and with that vent up above I wonder if the insides won't be getting dust easily), but also on the software / firmware side: no website with BIOS updates, limited, kinder garden-like BIOS setup, ... Did you end up getting one? How is it doing?

I really wish you showed a side by side comparison of some of those gaming tests with other N100 NUCs. The LPDDR5 memory should have a chunky bandwidth lead over the regular DDR4 SO-DIMM sticks which would result in higher GPU performance. Probably not by a whole lot but enough to justify its non upgradable memory.

I've done it before. Didn't make a difference. N95 and N100 aren't bandwidth limited. Might be because of the lack of EUs.

In single core the N100 (922) beats the 3770 (820). In multicore the 3770 has the lead (3650) over the N100 (2959). Couldn't find the graphics score, but the N100 is probably faster. Likely another budget generation and the 3770 will be beaten in all metrics.

Oh, I was comparing the desktop 3770 (missed the laptop bit). In that case, the 3520M gets beaten pretty easily. www.cpu-monkey.com/en/cpu-intel_core_i7_3520m. But the GT 630M graphics will come out on top. Since it's the CPU and not the graphics that's important for music production, the N100 should perform much better.

Tried it with a PCIE Gen 3 drive. I know it was never going to make a massive difference, but I was working from home, trapped in a room with a new Mini and a spare drive.... Anyway, it worked fine and CrystalDisk is giving me 841 MB/s, so that's a 50% speed increase. I'm only using it for work stuff, so it's not going to overheat. Pleased with the benchmark boost, but probably won't make any difference in performance. Back to work now ......
@Robtech
@Robtech 11 ай бұрын
Ah, so it works with NVME too. Nice. Didn't try as it said SATA only when I reviewed it 😅. At that speed, it's running at Gen 3 x1 speed like most of the other N100 minis.

@jabonorte 7 ай бұрын
@@Wojtek-J Haven't tested it with a Gen 4 but there's no reason why it shouldn't work - it's the same socket. You won't get any speed benefit though - it will still be a x1 connection. Worth doing if you already have a spare drive, but don't get too excited.
@Wojtek-J
@Wojtek-J 7 ай бұрын
@jabonorte Thanks Jabonorte, I appreciate your quick response. I did some reading after asking the question and it became clear that it would work (Gen4 is backward compatible), but its purchase probably doesn't make sense because of the high price and, as you wrote, in this little Chuwi it won't make any difference. What's important is that I can take out the M.2 SATA and throw the M.2 NVME in there - not even by speed gains, but it's easier and cheaper to buy NVME 2 TB and easier to move it to another device in the future. Great that NVMEs in Chuwi work, that's good news, thanks for letting us know about it

A tad late for when the video was released, but I am only now considering getting one, I was wondering if you could tell us something about the BIOS of the machine: does it allow for auto power on on power failure? My scenario has it running 24/7, but if the power goes out I'd like it to go back to being powered on directly. Also, no news about the kind of support we're to expect from this in terms of BIOS/microcode/firmware upgrades, right? I looked for it, but to get newer revisions it seems we need to contact the company (insert Jackie Chan meme face here).

Dear all, could you please suggest one thing which confuses me a bit... What would be the difference between Intel N100 PCs and AMD Ryzen (5500 for example)? Why the author compares PCs with same CPUs but not between different CPUs - for example to find best mini PC under 300$? Seems AMD performs much much better and are same quiet as well.. What is the magic and what I should chose if I want quiet mini-PC for office needs?
@Robtech
@Robtech Жыл бұрын
5500U wasn't a budget tier CPU when it launched. I consider budget under $250USD. If you can find a 5500U around that price, great. But I can't keep up with and compare discounted pricing of older generation minis. If AMD starts releasing new gen budget CPUs, they'll be in the comparison chart, but they've exited this market, leaving Intel alone. Oh, also I haven't reviewed a 5500U 😅

Usually I'd say... it depends, here I kinda have to agree. The depends part is because on DDR4, for example, you could be able to run a tighter integrated system (more MT/s) on the soldered package vs. user replaceable one. The N100 caps at 4800 MT/s regardless, hence me agreeing, subtimings may be better still when it comes to soldered (which in turn "may" benefit things dependant on the graphics part), but meh.

The one that it ships with is SATA, the thing itself allows for NVMe as well. I am not sure of the lanes it has allocated to it though with all that external IO.

I really enjoy your excellent MiniPC reviews. Do you think the smaller brands like Beelink, Minisforum, etc. are reliable enough (hardware as well as BIOS issues) to use as a PC for a non-tech savvy user? I'm looking for a Ryzen MiniPC for a family member, and really want to buy one of these, but was thinking an ASUS PN would be a safer bet based on overall quality control and BIOS. What do you think? Also, have you heard when ASUS PN is going to introduce a Zen 4 processor as Beelink, Minisforum, GPD have already announced? Keep up the excellent work, mate!

Yeah, they're fine. If there's a tweak needed, it's in the review, but even then you'll still get a working mini that just might not be performing at its fastest. But this one didn't need any further changes. ASUS PN line only has a one year warranty (same as the ones you mentioned, except Minisforum which is 2 years) and often run hot, I don't think they're any more reliable. The king of reliability are Intel NUCs which are rated for 24/7 use and have 3 year warranties. For the Ryzen PC for the non-tech savvy user - If you're in the US, I'd just grab one of the AZW manufactured boxes like this one for $240 and you can return it if you're unhappy or it has any issues. amzn.to/43YGAQC
