My New Favorite Door and the BEST Double Hung Windows

In Today's video we install the best double hung windows with an included energy performance package. This instantly changes the look of the front elevation of RRHQ, and then we install the first of two walk doors. The walk doors are by far my new favorite thanks to how easy it installs and how well sealed it is when completed. A double hung is not always great when it comes to high performance but I do like the look and action of them so this ended up being a great compromise.

There is a white piece of plastic in the latch that needs to be removed to make the door operate properly. Its put there to prevent damage during shipping. They used to use tape, but I guess they like this better, but never updated the documentation. You can even see it is there at 46:40. 2 seconds with a flathead and your door will work properly.

Good luck to you with Anderson windows. I have them on my house along with a sliding patio door. They are horrible. Will never use Anderson again. When I built the house we had to have a tech come out to seal the drafts in the windows 3 separate times. Didn't do much so I need to put plastic on every winter.

Hi Kyle and Greg (@RRbuildings) the engineering fluff on the sticker is how much sunlight comes through the panel. Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) how much thermal heat is transmitted through the window into the house. Ideally you want less in the summer (keep the insider cooler) and more in the winter (reduce heating costs). The value gives you the average value per area of window based on the glass, frame and insulation material. And visible transmittance is how much sunlight comes through. Your windows are top quality products which I imagine is reflected in the price.

Setting the door would have been a lot easier if you just grinded the hump out in the beginning. That way you have solid contact throughout the entire threshold. Otherwise if you don’t want to grind out the hump, you can install ice and barrier in 6” increments and use those as your “shims” until it’s perfectly level. Hope this helps😁

I’m a locksmith and all of those multipoint locks I’ve seen have a latch to hold the door shut. Are you sure there’s not a plastic cap on the edge of the door holding the latch in? A lot of them Also have a small plastic cap holding another tab in . If the small tab is out the dead bolt won’t extend. When you close the door the strike plate pushes the small tab in so the deadbolt will operate. That is to keep someone from extending the deadbolt then slamming the door and damaging the lock. Those locks give a lot of trouble if the door is not aligned very well and people get tough with them trying to extend the multipoint function.

Look on the door at the latch and see if you find a plastic piece wedged into the latching mechanism. If so, that piece needs to be taken out and then the door should actually latch! The door is definitely designed to latch. Pulling up engages all the other points of the door. Its a sweet door.

For the U factor, it is very simple. 1 / 0.27 (your U factor) = 3.703 So this the R-Value of your windows R3. Normally, triple glaze goes to R6. The solor heat gain is a pellicule on the glass that block the heat. You can choose wich side of the glass you want it and depending on the side, this pellicule will block more or less heat.

You could just grind the hump out of the middle. I've done that a couple of times to get a entryway level. I have used concrete sealant in all the entryways also. I've used a ramped jam if there's an inch or so step up through the doorway.

Our American doors are still pretty much crap, imo. In my (almost) passive house house I installed European tilt turn windows along with the manufacturer's doors too and the doors were like a bank safe, like zero air infiltration. And nobody knew how to use them. lol And I love all things Siga. I don't want to know how much I spent for all the different tapes but the one for the windows with the two separate strips for peeling off is really useful and ingenious. I didn't install Fentrim with the windows, I waited until after any gaps were filled in with foam, then I installed the tape.

I regretted using Anderson double hung windows After having them for ten years some lowers started to rot in the bottom right corner. Anderson would only provide replacements for the rotting ones, they wouldn’t install them. A few years later and the remaining had to be replaced, and yes I had to do it Fast forward 10 years, windows with full morning sun would break just the outside glass, very odd because it was a circular hole I hope you have better luck

On the info sticker of the windows. with glass the lower the value , the better the thermal insulation is . on glas they use the Solar heat gain coefficiënt, but see it as the R value of your wall insulation. in comparison, if you would take the thickness from your wall insulation and devide that with the lambda value of that insulation , you get the R value. the only difference between the two is that the way they calculate the glass is based off heat travel per m2 per W/m2K Watt/square meter Kelvin , or maybe Fahrenheit per sqeare feet on your sticker. but in essence it means how much temperature you gain [summer] or loose [winter] per degree per m2 ,thats why lower is better. and with insulation its based off resistence from the material itself, so how fast can heat and cold travel thru the material. hope this makes sense.
