A bit of backstory: Cutler Beckett had Jack transporting 100 slaves. that didn't sit well with Jack, so he set the slaves free, for which Beckett had him branded as a pirate, and sank his ship, the Wicked Wench. Jack made a deal with Davy Jones, to raise the Wench from the depths, which was now black (on account of having burned when it first sank), and renamed The Black Pearl. That's why Jones' bargain was 100 souls - one for each of the freed slaves that cost Jack his ship in the first place.

@@seankaneshiro2032 Ohhh, that makes sense. I always wondered what the actual history between Beckett and Jack was, because in the final cuts they only allude to it but never explicitly state it. Kind of a shame that scene is missing then, but the third film is already quite bloated and long, so I'm not surprised they'd cut it.

Also raising The Pearl gifted to her an unnatural speed, thats why The Interceptor (fastest ship of The Royal Navy) coudnt get off from The Pearl, regardless she has a torn sails (first movie) and thats why The Dutchman was easily left behind so Jones had to call a Kraken (second movie).

Pintel and Ragetti (The one-eyed pirate and his friend) are apparently Uncle and Nephew. It started as just a fan theory, but the directors liked it and decided it might as well be canon. There's a lot of bits like that. Barbossa's love of apples was just a simple joke at first, but they made them his favourite food because of the fan reaction. To answer your questions. 1) Jack didn't just wake up in a coffin. He used it as a means to escape the Turkish prison after he broke in to get the "drawing of a key." 2) You saw at the end of the first movie, in the post credits scene where the monkey becomes cursed again. After the first movie, Jack and the crew went back to the Isla de la Muerta to get all the non-cursed treasure Barbossa's crew had gathered, only to find the island had been reclaimed by the sea. All that was left was Jack the Monkey swimming about. 3) They got the Black Pearl back in the water by waiting for the tide to come in. That's how they would keelhaul a ship; lighten the ship by emptying its cargo, pull it ashore and tie it down so they could scrape the barnacles off the bottom and re-tar the hull to prevent any leaking. Once that's down, they wait for the tide to come in and help ease the ship back into the water. 4) The reason the Compass didn't work for Jack is because he didn't know what he wanted. He has to know exactly what it is that he wants in order for the Compass to function, but without enough detail or emotions causing him conflict, he couldn't get a clear heading. 5) Yes, the Kraken was among the many things sailors feared. Sailors were a fearful and superstitious bunch back in the day. Dating all the way back to ancient Greece, the sea was full of stories of creatures that would doom mortal men. The Flying Dutchman, Sirens, the Bermuda Triangle, Charybdis, Scylla, sea serpents, you name it. Christopher Columbus once faced a mutiny because sailors were afraid of the unknown territory they were sailing through and because they would run out of rations. Throughout history, there has been many stories of people and ships that have gone out to sea and were never seen again. The entire sea floor is a graveyard. 6) Yes, Jack Sparrow is dead. As Bootstrap Bill explained earlier, "Then it's the Locker for you! Jones' terrible leviathan will drag the Pearl back to the depths and you along with it." So basically Jack Sparrow has been taken to Davy Jones Locker. In olden times, it was a name meaning the bottom of the sea. Here, though, when Davy Jones is supposed to represent the Devil, I'm sure you can imagine what the Locker is supposed to be.

@alexman378
@alexman378 Жыл бұрын
Davy Jones is easily the best CGI character of the 2000s, and I believe the reason he looks so good, beyond the immense talent and skill of the artists behind him, is that the director, Gore Verbinski, has a VFX background, so he knew exactly how to set up shots, lighting, angles and be precise about what he wants with the VFX supervisor. Most directors just do whatever and then hope that the VFX people can simply move their magic wands and make it work.

Something to note is the end credit scene of Curse of the Black Pearl only explains why Jack (the monkey) is still cursed in Dead Man's Chest. When Jack (the monkey) took the coin out of the chest that didn't bring back Barbossa or recurse him, he was still dead. In fact you can see his dead body in this film when the crew first visit Tia Dalma. There is a different reason he is alive at the end of Dead Man's Chest.

About Comodore snatiching the heart in the end, actually you can notice it subtly. When him, Elisabeth and Will were fighting off Jones' crew on the shore, Comodore catches a glimpse of the heart in Jack's "jar of dirt". So, while Comodore played the noble guy and stayed on the island as a distraction, he actually outsmarted both Jack and Will, and left with the main trophey.

One of the things I like most about these two movies (Dead Man's Chest and At Worlds End) is that they hint at the past without revealing too much. It is intuited that Sparrow and Beckett had a run-in many years ago (many suggest Sparrow castrated Beckett), and in a deleted scene from At Worlds End (I seem to remember) it is hinted that Jack stole the Black Pearl when it was transporting slaves from Africa, and he corrects Beckett when he calls "cargo" those slaves telling him "People are not cargo, mate". The script gives these characters magnificent depth without falling into gratuitous exposition. This trilogy is fantastic.
@Anino_Makata
@Anino_Makata Жыл бұрын
Jack and Beckett had more than just a run in. Jack was once a privateer and merchant for the East India Trading Company, under the pretense that he would not transport slaves. Beckett, however, went against that term and forced Jack to carry a hundred slaves aboard the Wicked Wench (which would become the Pearl).

Davy Jones was 100% CGI from head to claw leg. The actor, Bill Nighy, was filmed with some make-up around his mouth and eyes, because the VFX guys at ILM knew there would be some extreme close-ups and they weren’t completely sure that they could make those areas look real enough, so they wanted those bits as a back-up; in the end they found that they could do it without relying on the make-up, though. It’s remarkable work, it made the whole industry go “Woah” and fully deserved the Oscar. And a big shout-out to Ve Neill and her make-up crew, too! Glad Vicky pointed out their work too. I think they deserved an Oscar, though they didn’t get nominated (for this one, at least - they got a nom for Black Pearl) 😁

So fun fact, the first movie was made and then they greenlit two more with many of the same cast members. Also because of the cast members signing on they were limited a bit with where the story could go as well
@garyballard179
@garyballard179 Жыл бұрын
That's generally how it goes in Hollywood. The first movie is made as a standalone, usually ties up most every thread. The first movie then becomes a hit, and a sequel is greenlit. Conversely, when they plan a trilogy from the beginning, they leave too many loose ends in the first film, the audience feels the first one is weak and empty, and it fails in theaters, thus killing the chances for the entire trilogy to be made.

The Commodore is actually a very complex character. I've watched this Trilogy (yes Trilogy) more than maybe any other movie except for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and I've had the chance to study him. Initially the Commodore looks to be the typical jock character after the same girl as the main lead is after but he looks way more suitable, charming, successful, capable and deserving of the girls affections over the pauper, roguish lead, but over the movies he grows. His affections for Elizabeth goes from crush, to resentment to fondness and finally acceptance that she's not going to be with him. He also isn't entirely good or bad. He does some selfish things but he's also brave, strong and a capable commanding leader. His character in my opinion gets more development in this series than any other. Jack, Liz and Will all remain the same thoughout in personality, character and motivations only their history and actions change and develop. But Norrington actually changes in personality, motivation and perspective over the course of the movies. He's a really well written character, honestly.

One of his first major film roles was as Vampire Elder Viktor in Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. He's done everything from rom-coms (Love, Actually) to science fiction, has done multiple video games (Destiny as The Speaker Of The Traveller), and was one of three actors on the final list to play The Doctor in the reboot of Doctor Who in 2006, a role that went to Christopher Eccleston instead. He's been in something like two hundred films at this point, all of them with speaking lines, as well as a cubic asston of TV shows. When the wheel arrived at the beach, Norrington, being as intelligent as he is, noticed the leftover dirt in the rowboat, indicating that the heart had been removed from the chest and into the jar. You see him tucking something (the heart) into his pocket before the others reach him. When it looks like they're gonna lose, he pretends to do the whole sacrifice play and run away with the chest (which everyone believes has the heart) in order to lure Jones' crew away and save the others. That's why he so easily gave it up when he got cornered, and everyone allowed him to run away with the heart in his pocket. Truly a pro-gamer move.

24:08 He wants the key and the chest. Those are two things, in two different places. There’s most likely another thing he wants “most,” tied for first place on his wishlist, since the compass appeared to spin to three places when he gazed at it. The key and the chest are useless without each other (magical chests can’t be broken), so he needs both to be safe from Jones, but I’m curious what thing would be tied with those on his priority list.

Lol the cast didn't even know Barbosa was coming back! Classic goosebump ending. And who said they weren't gonna harm the dog, yet? They made jack king before sacrifice, probably doing the same to the dog too.

28:07 Might I suggest a vacation to the island of Antigua then? I did field school there in 2004 for archaeology, and apart from the fact that I melted in the heat (it's between 15 to 35 C year round), it is known for having 365 beaches, one beach for every day of the year. They are primarily white sand beaches too, with those shallows you speak of before a small dropoff to deeper water. The snorkeling and shallow diving opportunities there are amazing. Saw my first wild seahorse there, it literally swam in front of my mask, turned to look at me like "You're an interesting but peaceful looking fish," then continued on its merry way

I think we're all in agreement that someone should've had the stones to stand up as Johnny was walking out of the court room and said for him, "And remember, this is the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow!"

I really love this movie, but I think my very favorite scene in it is when Jack is tied to the bamboo pole and falls down into the canyon. He gets spun off, crashes though a bunch of stuff, and lands on the ground. And then the pole and every single piece of fruit and debris lands around him while he's just lying there. Absolutely nothing hits him. Lucky Jack.

Whether Canon or not I like the story behind Jones and Jack. Not sure if it's spoilers but here's the story. Jack worked for Beckett and was tasked with delivering 100 slaves but Jack refused to do so, Beckett then saw to it that Jacks ship be destroyed and Jack marked as a pirate and I think they also left Jack for dead ontop his now burning ship tho I could be wrong but Jack then made a deal with Davy Jones and Jones brought back the black pearl which was charred black from the fire and that's how it got its name and as part of the bargain Jones tasked Jack with collecting 100 souls for him kinda of being a dick because he knew Jack had freed 100 men and now he'd have to condem 100 to servitude aboard the Dutchman.

25:04 that game had more context in the deleted scenes. Will actually won the first round between himself and Davy Jones. He pressured the captain for a second round, which is what we saw. It may have added too much but it clarified the bravado Will had. The game is based on probability and deception. the odds of winning are not good.

This isn't just the best Pirates movie. This is a cinematic masterpiece and the greatest middle chapter in any film trilogy. Yes, greater than Empire Strikes Back, Two Towers, Dark Knight & (my former favorite) "Spider-Man 2".
