Күн бұрын

Todays video we travel almost a 1000 miles to Shaver Lake in the Sierra National forest to do the 30 mile Dusy Ershim Trail. After completing this trail, it is now one of my favorite offroad destinations. This trail was a last minute replacement to the Rubicon trail, which was closed due to a forest fire. We had a great time overlanding and camping out of our small Jeep Wrangler TJ's. We encounter cold nights in the 20's as we were between 8,000 and 10,000 feet of elevation the whole trail. Some of the most popular obstacles are chicken rock and Thompson Hill along with great camping near Ershim Lake.

We've taken a few different Rovers through on 32s and 33s. Just did it with a Defender 90 on 33s, manual, trutracks f/r with no problems a couple weeks ago. Did it in with a Range Rover Classic on 32s a few years before. In terms of difficulty you may struggle some getting up Thompson hill as there are lots of dif catchers and it's mostly loose rock and dirt. Then on the north end there is some traditional crawling like you'd find on the Rubicon or other Sierra trails. But for the most part the big challenge is just keeping off the trees as it's very tight in places. I'd say a WJ should be prepared to touch the body on trees occasionally but otherwise you can likely do it well enough.

@@AustinH7 I would think that would be pushing in it terms of body damage and sliding the frame and undercarriage over everything, seems clearance brake over angle is pretty important...Love yotas btw

Glad you had a chance to run one of my local trails. It is definitely a favorite of mine. The bathrooms along the trail were placed by the Fresno 4WD club who do the trail maintenance. If I remember correctly a number of years ago they received money from BFG tires and used that to help pay for some of the toilets. My father in law helped get the ball rolling on the installation of them 20 some years ago after seeing the issues the Rubicon was having. Hopefully you were able to sign in to the visitor log that is at Ershim Lake campground. Always fun to see where people are from amd read about the issues they had on the trail. A few other local trails you would have fun on would have be Coyote Lake, Mirror Lake, and Swamp Lake.

Oh man, I'm envious! My all time favorite trail! My first time on Dusy, in my early Bronco on 33s (those were "big" 33yrs ago!) with worn out limited slips and an automatic trans and a loose body mount let my fan eat my radiator on Thompson Hill....the shame of being pulled out by a Jeep 😣 The sections where he couldn't pull me, I drove (connected the radiator hoses together) and shut it off before it got too hot. Had my dad run my spare radiator up from Pasadena! There used to be a real tight side hill beside a tree that was really challenging until the Hummer clowns cut it down!😠.....if you can't run a trail as is, find another trail! My Bronco (and experience) has come a long way since then and I pull a trailer behind it now. Next time you're out that way, you have to try some of the other trails....Swamp Lake is awesome and on the northern side of Shaver are the Red Mountain trails.....Red/Coyote, Stawberry Lake and Mirror Lake.....all one way in same way out. Coyote probably being tlhe most difficult. I'm retired now and living in Utah and really miss wheeling/camping in that area the most......and the food, I'm living in a culinary desert!

Hey MB, great video! The views were amazing, looks like a great place to wheel. I noticed only one of the Jeeps had tons ( I think?), yet all had big tires...looked like 37-40s. I was wondering if it's ever a problem with parts breakage with the dana 44 and the big tires. I'd like to run the stock dana 44's and lockers in a JK Rubicon with a regear and RCV's and 37-40 inch tires and wondered if you thought it's doable with reasonable driving.
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 Жыл бұрын
Well… we have 1/2” ton Dana 44’s and 9” so they are larger and a stronger housings with bigger knuckles and brakes. But I have never had any issues with gears, only one broken axle shaft/ u joint before I switched to rcv’s. So it is doable. My Jeep doesn’t make a ton a power especially with the auto so it’s easy on parts. So with lots of upgrades and a good truss to hold it together it should be good 👍🏻

@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 Жыл бұрын
We parked at the maxson trailhead. And did the trail south to north. When we were done we had a few hour drive on pavement to get back. We learned most the locals come in the north and come down maybe half the trail and come back out the same way. Most of the hard stuff was on the second half, but I would say doing it both ways will give you different experiences.

Question when you guys are in lo range climbing and you let of gas sometimes there’s a noise coming from front axle. My 05 Rubicon does same thing it sounds like click. Is this normal? Seems like most Jeeps I’ve been around do this. I have checked my front axle and the pinion yoke has the slightest amount of play in it. What causes this and should I worry? Enjoy your channel.
