Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Yes Chris, as the grandfather of 6 grandkids 3 and under I would love to be able to paint them in their likeness and preserve these beautiful faces in something other than a simple photo. Love your tutorials and learn so much from your teaching style. Just need to make the leap now from acrylics to oils! With little ones around I am wondering about the water mixable versions and whether I would achieve the same experience as going all the way with pure oils? Thoughts?

Excellent video, Chris! Your explanation of accuracy is spot on. Great, succinct statement on how to approach painting portraits. Yes, using tools to measure out is fine (no it's not "cheating"), but unnecessary. You can use these to check yourself, but what you really want to learn to do is train yourself to see the abstract shapes expressed by the planes and tones in the face, and trust your eye, not worry about the literal lines or drawing. This results in a more loose and free and painterly portrait that is far more pleasing to the viewer. Artists always seem to start out thinking being photoaccurate is the goal of portraiture, or painting in general. It isn't. Creating an emotionally accurate painting is the ultimate goal.

This was really good! I'm just learning not to follow so closely and exactly a portrait- I am just seeing that it actually comes out way better if I eyeball or paint slightly more intuitively than try to copy exactly. I like your skin tone mixing- I see artists using green as an under tone wash but it hasn't worked well for me. I am going to use a bit in my too pinky-pink tones. Would love to see a video on painting a child. Thank you! Glad I found you!

These paint talks are priceless!! Your information is so good. Thank you. I must admit I am curious about how you would paint a child, even though they don't appeal to me as a painting subject. I would like to see how they would look in your style. This recent painting looks great from a distance, but not so nice close up. Congratulations on reaching 100k, you really deserve it.

Painting what you see and removing all thought and association of what is in front of you gives the most accurate painting. However to do this is very difficult to do as you will only see nothing but shapes and light. You'll have to fight your brain trying super simplify the subject, colors and lighting. Every artist fights this battle until they die but the most experienced in the battle and have the upper hand. They use many tools to keep the upper hand. A tool for the battle is the knowledge of anatomy. It helps making the decision on how to complete the painting. For example lets go with the human face. For some reason, where the laugh lines meet the nose I always got that wrong. I kept painting it over and over again and I wasn't satisfied. I could not get my brain to see what was right in front of me. Until I looked in a mirror. I kept looking at it and noticed that the line goes above the wing of the nose. Not in the middle and not below it. I changed the line accordingly and everything fell into place. I then started to look at multiple peoples faces and anatomy pictures to see where these common structures are located and how similar they were or different they were in people. When you know what portion of an object it is and the usual shape it might take, you can place a placeholder there and get back to it. Then adjust it if needed. Trying to get EXACTLY what you see in a reference photo or in life is almost impossible. I have yet to see any artist win the battle against their brain. I've seen many experienced artists with their experience and knowledge to bridge the gaps and make a complete painting. It's strange ...you have to disassociate everything at the start of the painting and see them as shapes with light and shadows colors an values. Then somehow at the same time come back and place associations into the painting to complete it. I think this is because when we start the painting, we don't see a face (complete painting). So at the beginning just painting what you see and going by shapes, form, structure, etc. without putting details feels right. Then when we go into details, we bring back those associations into the painting to complete it.

Question for you: how do you feel about students using your lessons but applying them to digital art? I ask because i havnt set up a work station at home to properly paint on canvas, but i do have a digital tablet that i use autodesk sketchbook on, and i use the oil paintbrush tool to paint. Are you open to critiquing someone who isnt painting on canvas but is following your tutorials digitally?

Actually the easiest way for nearly everyone to do a lifelike drawing or painting portrait is to take a photo then turn it upside down & draw/paint what you see. Try it doing a pencil sketch of Churchill from an inverted picture-you'll be amazed at the results.

Chris, congratulations on 100k subscribers. I don’t know why it’s taken so long, I love your vids! So very informative. I have art notes I write on my iPhone and I bounce back and forth from the notes to your videos when you say something I need to remember. Got a ton o notes! 😂 How long did it actually take you to paint this portrait? I’m SO slow. I need to lighten up! You get an exquisite portrait in a seemingly short period of time. Thanks in advance.

If you paint and not use measured scale for the painting- then the purportions are from your personal scale for thing, and not referenced from a device which has no relationship in your mind's eye. I think that is something you were trying to convey :)
