Due to the current global situation, some of my other projects have met a bit of a road block, so I decided to pull one of my old homemade subs out of storage to revamp it and bring it to life.

Nice build! I’m considering moving away from steam and making a basic sub out of a 250g propane tank.
@HankPronk

A 250 gallon tank is a nice size to handle and launch etc. I was a steam guy for a while, and still have a couple steam engines.

Hank Pronk yeah they’re fun, especially custom/scratch building one. I checked the dimensions of a 250 gallon and it seems like i would have to recline a little though.

You didn't by chance have a sub for sale in Calgary a few years ago did you? If so I was in touch with you as was considering purchasing it as a friend of mine knows you and actually went with you as a support diver I wont post his last name but his first name is Ken.

That’s so cool!! I like the idea of a small submersible. Is there going to be an arm going on it?
@HankPronk
@HankPronk 4 жыл бұрын
Yes there is, it will be on the right side ahead of the sphere, beside the leg tube. It is a 4 function electric arm that I built. The arm is currently mounted on my deep diver sub.

Very interesting Hank... love the videos on your creations. What is the depth limit for this sub? What do you use for the spherical chamber? And what would be the cost in materials to build this? BTW can't wait for more videos, great job!
@HankPronk

This sub can dive 400 feet and would cast around 10K in materials to build. That is if you can get a left over piece of acrylic like I did. If not a full 10 foot piece of acrylic cylinder is 10K US

@@jfp1842 I bought the steel domes fro Edmonton Exchanger in Edmonton Alberta. They are custom bent to ensure the sphericity is within 1% of Diameter.

For the Ring: Some reason you chose acrylic over polycarbonate? I ask because I know what happens inside the material of acrylic when it's machined. It's too late now 'cos you are done. But I'd probably have gone with a router bridge and a nice flat torsion table for hogging. but if all I needed to remove was something under 0.10" I'd use abrasive on a flat surface and hand lap it. Of course now, with your new mill you have a much better way to do things like this. But still, why acrylic over polycarbonate?
@HankPronk
@HankPronk Жыл бұрын
Acrylic is the only excepted material for a certified submarine. Other materials will work, but have not gone through all the testing. It took millions of dollars and many years to establish guidelines for acrylic
@Raul28153
@Raul28153 Жыл бұрын
@@HankPronk How Very interesting~!! I made lots and lots of acrylic PH Blood Gas Analyzer chambers. After machining, we had to put them in an annealing oven and then ramp them down overnight. Failure to do this caused crazing in the plastic months or years later. We switched to polycarbonate and ended that whole problem. But I do understand the " stick in the mud" mentality of Standards. I once asked my Dr why they only gave me a flue vaccination in the one muscle in the arm and never varied. the answer; Because that's where they tested it and there won't be any deviations.
@HankPronk
@HankPronk Жыл бұрын
@@Raul28153 I made my own dome by machining it out of a block. I did a 96 hr anneal cycle as per PVHO rules. Having said that I am starting to test an epoxy window we made so we can make a 60 inch sphere. Fingers crossed.
@Raul28153
@Raul28153 Жыл бұрын
@@HankPronk That sounds aggressive. Novalac Epoxy?
@HankPronk
@HankPronk Жыл бұрын
@@Raul28153 you can machine acrylic without an annealing cycle as long as the temperature of the acrylic does not rise. Some people machine a dome seat by mounting the dome like a bowl in a turn table and filling the dome with ice water. I once had to refuse a steam clean at a invasive species check stop in California with my submarine. Hot water can render a submarine window useless. I opted for a quarantine ( sub only) for 30 days.

@@HankPronk well besides an ultralight plane kit I don't have much knowledge on aviation, but I'd say I'd be more scared to build a homeade sub at the least, because if you fail with a sub it's sealed shut due to water pressure

Talentless Cult ultralight planes are scary too because the frames have to be to able to withstand turbulence. I saw a wing test which was a carbon fiber wing loaded with cement bags for 12 hours. Based on the pilot weight he tested it to (what would be) 7 g’s. That’s just a rigid omniwing glider though, I’ve seen some simple designs with aluminum online.
