Fantastic Michael. I work Ps and ACR exclusively w/ heavy start up in ACR, I mean I may do almost ALL my work there in ACR right off the bat. I LOVE this way you work it, and a HUGE thanks for this tip tutorial. I do find that I can really bog down ACR w/ masking so much, and I think you've just cut it's workload by a large percentage. I'll definitely see how it goes using your suggestions. Also, your LIGHTROOM MASTERCLASS, would seem to not apply for me, do you offer a Ps/ACR MC or what? Thanks a bunch - I try to catch as many of your videos as possible and just love your images and the processing.

Michael this is awesome. With the dodge layer, after you make the adjustment in raw and bring it back to Photoshop, how would you make a lights luminosity selection for a more controlled dodge?

You can put it into a folder and then add a mask to that folder, with a luminosity mask :)

Thank you very much for this. A few questions: 1. Does opening in PS as a smart object bring over all of the Lightroom edits that were already done? 2. What format does the file come over as into PS? I gather that its actually the RAW file and not a TIFF? So if I save this in PS, would I be saving as a PS file, TIFF or what?

If I'm not speaking out of turn or just plain wrong, the only significant increase in file size here is his creating that merged layer. I believe the smart object layers are inconsequential. Sorry if I'm wrong, but try it out and see for yourself if the file size increases much as you add smart layers.

So when you “open as smart object” it includes the raw file? Because the Camera Raw window/“editor” can be opened even with tif files (ctrl + shift + a I think), but I assume that that tif file does not have all the dynamic range and so on, right? It’s rasterized.
@MichaelShainblum
@MichaelShainblum 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed! The Tiff files can be shifted too far without banding in a lot of cases.

I use smart objects a lot but it all goes to pot when I use a merged layer which I like to do often, then I cannot go back (as far as I am aware) easily.
@MichaelShainblum
@MichaelShainblum 3 жыл бұрын
That's the tough part, you really have to do the merged layer editing towards the end of the process, like for cloning and sharpening.
@stevenrobinsonpictures

@@MichaelShainblum good point i must be more strict and do it at the end. I do love dodging on a merged layer. I dont like the effect of dodging based on highlights or shadow lum masks. The tools in PS feel more vibrant and real for me

Smart objects are GREAT, but how do you deal with Photoshop's inability to auto-align them? I shoot a lot of focus stacks, and my first step is auto aligning the files for blending which means I can't use smart objects. Any thoughts?

Thats a tough one, honestly for focus stacked images I just use the tiffs. Although you can you a smart object for the background layer to still retain the best possible quality from the sky and clouds of a scene.

Why is it any better than gradient and brush masking in the Lightroom? Since no Photoshop specific tools are involved I see no difference in the result, just more complicated process. What have I missed?
@MichaelShainblum
@MichaelShainblum 3 жыл бұрын
I use multiple tools here that are not available in Lightroom. But either way, these are meant to show just a few examples, not every possible outcome of what you can do here. The point is you can use almost any tool in Photoshop in correlation to a smart object. Instead of a rasterized layer, with the exception of things like sharpening and cloning. The other point is to always have a way back into the RAW file for adjustments through Photoshop even after hours of work. People enjoy selecting, masking, and adjusting through photoshop given all of the more refined tools. Now that is possible to do non-destructivly.
@stigmata77

why not just use masked adj layers instead of duplicating everytime increasing file size?
