Giving my back-up phone to my brother, who damaged his, was a perfect excuse to buy a new backup phone and see how the Chinese phablets are progressing. And they're doing very well indeed. So much so that my Moto-G is now the backup phone.
Here's the link to the ebay listing I bought it from:-
www.ebay.com/itm/361385914155
The Chinese LOVE their big screen Android phones, so it follows that they are available with a wide range of screen sizes and capabilities at a price that makes the big-name brands look grossly overpriced.
Since the horrible incident involving my first Android phone (on a 2 year contract) and my washing machine, I've always preferred to buy a phone outright and just get a SIM contract from my phone service provider. It works out cheaper in the long run and you don't get tied into low-value contracts. The price of Android phones has fallen to a very affordable level, while the specification keeps getting better and better.
For the typical engineer a phone like the one featured is a very good choice, but the size will literally depend on the size of your pocket. And I don't mean financially, I actually mean physical size.
While choosing a phone I made cardboard cut-outs of the sizes and tried them in the cargo pocket of my work pants. The 7" screen was never going to fit and a 6" one would have been close. But in the end 5.5" was an optimum size.
All Android phones tend to have their own unique features. For this one it's the HUGE battery, a fast charging system to support it and the intriguing infra red emitter on the end that works with an app called zazaremote to give you remote control of a wide range of equipment.
Add the very slick 4 core processor and common Mediatek controller with a twist of 4G and a very clear, bright screen and you have a very useful tool indeed.
These phones are really like the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy. A pocket terminal with access to all the data you need.

Thanks for the tip, Clive. On the basis of this review I bought one. This is my first smart phone; I've been a 'dumb' mobile user since 1994 but decided to go smart for various reasons this time round. Love the battery life, which I was dreading based on observation of friends with smart phones always running out. I'm getting ~20 hours continuous intensive use up to 4-5 days standby/light use. For £99 quid from Amazon it's amazing. It seems to me that costs have been cut on the quality of the camera and speaker, and the earphone connection is a bit flakey - requires wiggling the plug a bit to get a good connection (not a problem for me as I have a 160Gb iPod classic for music and a 'real' camera), everything else is great. Build quality otherwise feels outstanding for the money. Have also invested in a spare battery - Cubot's are very reasonably priced compared to the big brands - which theoretically gives me up to 10 days away from the mains. After a month I've only had one problem as pre-installed software is pretty much vanilla plain Android 5.1 (aka Lollipop) - a Satnav ap which refused to install extra maps. Also not a problem as a number are available and after testing three of them, it was not my favourite.

Great to see a common-sense review of this phone. I saw this on sale on my favourite Chinese site and wondered what they were like. Also pleased to see the Power Supply teardown. I have bought several Cube brand android tablets direct from China and their chargers were similar - Safe enough, although I didn't trust the brand of the electrolytics for long-term reliability, and their conducted EMC emissions were poor enough to disturb the tablet's touch screen. If you want a pleasant surprise, tear down a Samsung 2A USB charger. I bought several off Ebay but opened one because I was suspicious it might be fake. Thankfully not, in fact the build quality was exquisite. Not only slots in the board to enhance isolation barrier, but plastic insulating barriers built into the case as well. And the transformer had a split bobbin to keep primary from secondary. Nice.

It is amazing what you can get for the money now. I am surprised manufacturers can sell £400+ phones now. The ability to use the phone as a charger is very interesting. I haven't seen that feature before. New features like this seem to be rare now. One thing I am surprised we havent seen is more phones with projectors. Maybe battery life still needs to improve significantly. One of my favourite apps is called "Darker". Very simple app that lets you reduce screen brightness by much more than the standard setting lets you. Great for bedtime. Saves your eyes when you wake up and want to check your phone when it's dark. Presumably saves significant battery too. I think there are quite a few similar apps but this was just the first I tried.

+bigclivedotcom IPS is also more of an LG thing vs AMOLED is more of a Samsung thing. IPS doesn't have the contrast ratio that AMOLED does, but some people prefer it because the color matching is better. AMOLED tends to lean towards "this is the reddest red you could possibly imagine", "this is the greenest green you could possibly imagine" AMOLED also is more traditionally associated with a one glass solution whereas with some other screens you can replace the broken glass, the ones like this, the LCD is a permanent part of the glass and cannot be removed without damage.

I believe most of the latest Apple devices follow Qualcomm's proprietary "Quick Charge 1.0" standard, although some of the latest Android devices follow Qualcomm's "Quick Charge 2.0" standard. And there is a "Quick Charge 3.0" on the way. If you're thinking of buying a car charger, I recommend Anker's "PowerDrive+ 1" charger on Amazon. The product ID is B0107VEKQG. Don't get the two-port version as that's only a "Quick Charge 1.0", which means it will quick-charge the Apple devices, but not some of the latest Android devices.

I have that same screwdriver set you show 17:00 minutes in but it's red and branded Husky. its an older revision and my bit holder is significantly worse. it is plastic and relies on the friction between the bit and the plastic to hold it in (needless to say works very poorly). also the bits don't have the plastic edge over them that you complained about. you can pull them out by hand but often I push too hard and they go between my nail and finger. also the black rubbery plastic on the grip will get very brittle and fall completely to bits in about 3 years unless they changed the formula.

OTG on a supporting phone is intersting, usb mice, even cordless ones work, and a pointer appears on screen, keyboards work, and usb flash drives pop up and can be used just like on a PC

The video/audio gain might be fixed with a replacement camera app, if it's software causing the strangeness. Otherwise perhaps the processor under load is causing noise in the audio circuit, which it wouldn't be doing in the basic audio recording app. Nice that it comes with Android 5.1 and 2GB of RAM, should minimise lag while switching apps and support most of the latest features even without a firmware update. I use OTG for a Fiio E17 DAC to play music and videos on my tablet, otherwise it can be used for infrared cameras and other fun (expensive) toys.

My recent phone is also a HTC One (M7)! Almost 3 years old, 2 speakers, dropped it the first time today, lost a tiny bit of black colour on an edge :D Also with a 2 years contract, but no washing machine accidents by now c: The only problems I ever actually had with this thing is the camera (which has the well known HTC One purple stain) and the video playback. It can easily run most of the stuff directly with 1080p@30fps. But not 60fps :C 720p 60 is no problem, but 1080p60fps is not possible with any player without enabling frame skipping and hoping that it works at all without killing your eyes or the video stopping completely and only sound playing. Another bad thing is that it is not expandable with a microSD card. But I got 3x 64GB USB Sticks with USB 3.0 standard plug and micro USB OTG plug in one. REALLY nice to have such gigantic amount of storage. Also didn't connect the phone to the PC for a long long time due to just copying stuff on the stick and copying the files on the phone or just using them directly from the stick. My next phone shall be (if it isn't outdated by then) the HTC One M9, being just an upgrade in pretty much everything to the HTC One M8, which was already an upgrade to my HTC One M7. I know there is the HTC One M10, but it hasn't dual speakers which is an utter no-go for me after having actual stereo speaker output on a phone. Oh and you can't connect PS3/PS4 controllers via Bluetooth to it to play emulated games or just Android games with it. :c

not sure if your monitoring these older videos but CUBOT have bought out the CUBOT Power (2018) now by the time you read this i should have it tomorrow (i had to move to a HTC m9 phone as the H1 was to slow) this might replace the pixel 1 XL i have currently (want bigger screen and larger battery i know i lose monthly updates but been able to use the phone for days or flat out for 9-10 hours is far easier)

I once bought a Chinese phone. They declared it as MP3 player ... True, it does that, too, but they also conveniently omitted the leading 1 in the hundred's place when they declared the value on the envelope, which made Customs wave it through ... Oh well.

Based on your review and my budget, I decided to try a Cubot X9. It's great, my only criticism is that the battery capacity is not that great (I only get a day of usage). And the charger quality does seem a bit suspect. But can't be too critical considering, it comes with an Octacore processor, 2 gigs of ram and a pretty good camera. For only £85.

I have small hands, a 5.5 inch phone is just a bit too big for me. Nevertheless, the Cubot H2 looks great, will certainly buy one (if my X9 fails me) or recommend it to friends

If you install CyanogenMod on the Moto G, you may find that the better SIM card features of your new phone are then available on your old phone. CyanogenMod consists of a community of programmers who release updated versions of Android (literally based on the actual Android source code) for a wide variety of phones. There are currently 5 Moto G phones they support: Moto G (falcon) Moto G (2015) (osprey) Moto G 2014 (titan) Moto G 4G (peregrine) Moto G 4G 2014 (thea)

+Johnny English Last time I checked, (a while back) the Cyanogenmod team were having issues with the implementation of the dual SIM functionality because it required a significant rewrite of the system, which is a lot of work. I'll have to see if they have made progress in that area. I've never actually had a phone that had a version of Cyanogenmod available for it when I bought it.

bigclivedotcom Ah, I didn't know that they had to create that part of the code themselves. I thought that code may have just been part of Android. Interesting. I'm not really into phones. I don't even use the SIM card. I only bought mine (an old HTC Wildfire S) when I discovered that there was a libre OS available. I'm a hardcore libre software advocate. I don't use it as a phone, yet I'm currently doing a Udacity course learning how to write Android apps... Yes, I'm very odd. LOL

If Cubot can manage that, though there is no overclocking without adding a custom ROM for example, i'd love to see their flagship model if they do one.. Octo-core 2GHz with 3GB of RAM or something! More RAM than my old S3 which is definitely good and 100 quid.. Not bad at all! Hmm.. I think i want one! Sadly my Nokia still works fine.. 1.2GHz Quad core there but 1GB RAM..

oh well almost all new android phones have OTG, softnavbar (buttons on screen) can also show with swipe (from bottom border of screen), if you have any problem with system you can restart whole phone with holding volume down and power for around 8-10 seconds, most phone can be dissasembled without big problems (nexus 6 etc. exept for unibody phones like htc m8 and waterproff phones) also you have cover at your phone so removing battery will take whole eternity ;) and most software things can be modified with flashing and rooting :) just saying

Chinese 'phone manufacturers have been advancing in leaps and bounds over the past year or so; gone are the days of dodgy knock-offs or severely-underspecified devices (with sometimes fake feature reporting in the firmware). I recently got a Bluboo Xtouch for a friend, which at AUD$180 including DHL delivery was amazing value - for features I'd suggest are at least as good as the Samsung S4 (and possibly S5). If the countless tiny manufacturers can get their acts together and present a unified marketing front in the West, I'm sure they'd have no problems competing very well against the established brands. Interestingly, the well-known name brands from China - Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi - are very poor in cost/feature terms in comparison to their lesser-known counterparts. Perhaps the cost of marketing in the West? Or maybe there're licencing issues with which the smaller manufacturers don't bother?

At a first glance, this looks like a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 knock off from the first look at the earpiece speaker, to the plastic bezel which is exactly the same as on the Note 3. Regarding the sleeker running, that can be tweaked in adroid developer options. When I had trouble on my Note 2, I just tweaked the graphics\menu delay timings etc. The russians are very fond of chinese phone tech and I suggest you browse the runet to see if there are any decent custom roms for this device. I saw only rooting instructions on xda developers, so I do not believe you will get anything out of there.

I highly recommed Xiaomi. I have been using their phones for about 2 years and they out perform Apple's offerings on my specifications. Of course, Xiaomi is a Chinese phone. The Chinese have a phrase for this kind of produce - Shanzai - literally "Mountain village" meaning any small production unknown brand electrical product.
