I guess One thing I didn’t touch on is that this truck was was literally exactly half the cost of the 2020 superduty. The superduty was the only vehicle I’ve ever had a payment on. I did put a good amount down so I wouldn’t be upside down in it. But still I didn’t like that I didn’t truly own it. I know it’s fine and whatnot it’s not bad to finance. But I’m just not that person. I drove around $1000 daily for years to avoid a car payment. The only reason I did it this time was for the peace of mind. Which is fine anyway. So selling it. Buying this. Means no more payment. And this thing wasn’t much more than I can sell the fummins for. But needs far less stuff to be where I want it to be. So it’s actually cheaper in the long run for me than doing everything the fummins needs. Plus not having to try and upgrade the fummins in between needing to use it. I do plan to still fix up the fummins. And if I realize this was the wrong call. Then I got to use this as a temp tow rig to make building the fummins easier. Also if you want a chuckle. Go watch the video buying the superduty. I explain why I bought it and word for word what I said I was avoiding happened. Lol

@@jacobjones784 yeah I made it this far in my life without it. Caved for the superduty for the reliability and warranty. Realized that was a joke. So I’m never going back. And it has 160k miles. A bit more than I wanted but it was localish and perfect for me otherwise.

Hey Taylor, I towed a gooseneck for years with my mega cab. If you don’t want to modify the trailer, get yourself a pull right super glide hitch. When you turn, it actually slides the pin towards the back of the bed. You can have the trailer 90 degrees without hitting the cab. I was towing a 40’ trailer loaded to 14k. That hitch is beefy. Happy towing!

I'm a Dodge mechanic. As far as the problems these transmissions have really depends on which trans you have. if its the 68rfe they are prone to quite a few problems but they shift smooth and quick. The problems range from converters stuck in lock up too solenoids cracking the valve body like you mentioned. regardless upgrade the transmission cooling big time if you want it too live a long healthy life. Also when they do let go, they get very hot, very fast and can actually push the fluid out of the dipstick tube, land on the exhaust manifold and light on fire, so a locking dipstick is a must. if its the Aisin transmission they are pretty bullet proof but they shift like it too. As far as the rest of the truck you shouldn't have many issues, the turbo actuators go bad every now and again but that's literally a 30 minute job. the 3rd brake lights leak sometimes so just pull it off and give it a reseal now. also check the big body connector behind the fl fender liner, they are prone too water ingress and thus corrosion, take it off, chuck it full of dielectric grease and you're set. Good luck with the new rig!

I've built a ton of 68rfe's, for what you're doing I dont think you need a billet valve body. Revmax bonded separator plate, buy the solenoid switch valve reamer kit and an oversize valve, drill the hole for added line pressure (you will need tuning for this) toss a new solenoid pack in there while you're at it. If you have access to a scanner check the OD clutch volume index (40-50 is ideal) and this will give you a general idea on the health of the internals. Get a billet nipple for the spin on filter. Also a good low stall 15 blade billet converter makes a huge difference. I would be more than happy to source parts for you and walk you through anything you need help with. They are actually very simple to work on.
@brianschein2320
@brianschein2320 Жыл бұрын
I would preventively put a sonnex overdrive clutch housing since losing 5th and 6th gear the main issues with these transmissions other than the valve body warpage issues. Especially since you're going to be mainly towing in overdrive. The factory design clutches are so thin and only single-sided the sonnex kit addresses issues it doesn't make it perfect but definitely increases the surface area of the overdrive clutches.
@calebwilliamson7525
@calebwilliamson7525 Жыл бұрын
I would also look into getting a billet flexplate for that kind of towing. I had one bend and break the transmission adapter plate. It was towing a gooseneck about the same size.
@parkerearp4316
@parkerearp4316 Жыл бұрын
The sonnax drums are great, I have had better luck with them compared to several others. However, I don't suggest anyone have their first automatic trans experience be a 68rfe input drum lol. Taylor may have been in some autos before so idk, he's very talented so probably wouldn't have an issue. Also, while you're at the input drum might as well upgrade the 2C return spring retainer, then at that point you're pretty much building the entire trans. If your overdrive clutch CVI is in spec, fluid doesn't look scary, I would definitely do the valve body upgrades I mentioned above and then just enjoy it. Good trans tuning and a healthy valve body goes a long way in driveability and lifespan.
@parkerearp4316
@parkerearp4316 Жыл бұрын
@@calebwilliamson7525 I dont see too many broken flex plates unless you're running a triple disc converter. On stock style dual disc converters I usually dont suggest a billet flex plate. A low stall billet converter is actually less likely to break the plate. Not as much RPM gap to bring together and the billet backing plate doesn't distort and put weird forces one the plate. Not that a good flex plate is ever a bad idea, I just don't see them as a necessity on most stock-ish trucks. However Anything that needs a triple disc also needs a billet flex plate, billet input and an upgraded input drum of some sort. Sonnax, revmax, suncoast etc.

Biggest thing the local guys here in Australia do is a really big under bed trans cooler with twin push/pull fans on it. Change to the shatter proof heavy duty flex plate, higher grade flex plate bolts and lock up correctly rated torque converter to suit the towing duties this is being used for. Upgrade the solenoids, valve body, clutches and drums to billet. Put a deep finned pan on it with aftermarket drain. You will run almost double the trans oil with a radiator sized cooler, but preventing heat soak is the goal. Of course a trans retune is also going to make it live a better life. I’m all for extending the frame on this and removing add on hitch relocation bracket extensions as these are high stress high failure items that can cause you big hassle in the long run. Don’t over wheel the truck with heavy Alcoa type wheels as this just causes additional steering and suspension stress. A load helper bag system on the rear axle should be installed to improve towing and ride quality. Like someone already mentioned check all external wiring connectors and fill with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion from the humid Florida air. Upgrading ground straps is advisable. You may also want to have the ABS system flushed and recalibrated for towing as well. Now is also the best time to go completely through the heater and cooling system on this truck and put a slightly colder thermostat in it as it will want to run hot when towing long distances. Remove the grid heater unless you’re planning to travel into colder climates. In Florida I don’t see the need for it. Yep I’ve said a lot, but when you make an investment like this you want to do as much as you can to preserve it. Good luck Taylor

That combo used to be sold as a new truck. It was called a Sterling. I avoided the teens duramax trucks because of the CP4 fuel pump and the fact they are 140 ft lbs less power when stock. I thought about a bulletproofed 2005 6.0 but luckily went with a 2020 fully loaded L5P duramax. The allison/gm 10 speed is great and I would rather push a duramax than listen to a cummins run, especially since all the cummins trucks I drove were dogs when unloaded. The duramax is extremely quiet even when towing and I would never have a short bed. CC LB is the only way to go. Love the truck Taylor! I scrolled enough down the comments to know some people arent taking to the new truck idea too well, but honestly, listening to the video I was sold halfway through, and I was someone who commented on your last truck video telling you to consider keeping the fummins. It just seems like this new truck is going to do you real well. I was also here when you built the fummins, and also when you had issues with it on the road. It certainly seems/seemed like a nice truck, but that doesnt mean it was going to be the best option forever or the best option as your operation got bigger (bonus points for more room for the homies). Also hey, anything that makes you feel more comfortable and ready to make awesome videos is a win in my book. I know people who make less money than you do who value these trucks way more than you do as well. I hope the new truck is awesome and serves you Taylor, and also, I wouldnt be knocking the extended cab/frame upgrade idea either. There was one video on yt that did really well (it was a Tacoma, someone else in your comment section even mentioned it), so could be a cool video idea/series too. P.s. Also I totally get the manual thing being rough specifically on long trips. I have a muscular disease that makes extened/repeat leg movements painful and I actually switched dailies in order to reduce the overall leg pain.

And I’ve done a few transmissions that are in tuned and deleted trucks and they end up blowing up pretty quick because the trans is already being pushed to its max behind the Cummins. Also it looks easy to work on but you still have to pull the cab to pull the head. You can barely get the valve cover off with how far under the cowel the engine goes. Make sure you keep up on the maintenance like fuel filters ccv filter and trans services since you are towing a lot and it’ll be a good truck

Long time lurker here. I know of a few older 2000's ford 7.3 trucks with milage between 500 to 800k on them. Some had injectors replaced, one with a HPOP replaced at about 600k (800k truck). I would genuinely consider a 7.3 engine and trans swap if you're looking into something that's bullet proof because all of these trucks are towed almost every day and all of them have the original transmissions. None of these trucks are owned by the same drivers, and none of them know each other. Now the ironic part. 800k truck is retired by a 2021 6.7 and he's already not sure of it. He kept away from the 6.0 and it's failures but he did the right thing and has kept the truck just in case. Only reason he's retired the truck is because 700-800k is about the realm of rod fatigue and is planning what to do about it if he decides to reservice it. All he's ever done to this truck is make sure the oil is changed, and has the trans oil changed yearly.

Love the new truck! I’m a diesel tech who works on these trucks pretty much every day so just a couple things to think about in my opinion. It looks like it has stock head bolts. The 6.7s do have some head gasket issues so doing a head gasket and some ARP studs before any problems might be something to think about. Get the head surfaced and hone the block! It will blow again if it doesn’t have a good sealing surface. And for the transmission get a built valve body from goerend transmission and a deep pan. They are the best for transmission parts and are a super good company to deal with, we use all their parts for our transmissions at our shop and they have never steered us wrong. And would very much recommend putting on a fass lift pump with filters. Extra filtration and their new water separator filter is the best in the game. Bad fuel and water is the number one thing I see destroy fuel systems way to early on these trucks. And if you ever need a pump or injectors go with Dynomite Diesel, Lenny and the guys in Idaho are the best and another great company to deal with! Super glad for you, I’ve had a 6.7 for years and love it! Hope I could be of some help.

Love the truck. I have 3 of them. If your seriously worried about brake downs keep an extra turbo, and extra water pump,and and extra tipm. All easy to change. Likely hood of you haveing an issue with an anytime soon is rare as specially with the tipm. Only had to change a water pump in the road

Beautiful truck, only problem is you don't have the Aisin transmission so i would definitely look to upgrade that 68rfe

Disappointed the fummins is not sticking around but it’s a nice truck short bed is gonna be a challenge I’d keep the fummins so when this one has issues you can still tow😂

To keep the trans happy, the valve body upgrade is good, but also highly recommend a billet converter. Stock one is garbage in both the 48 and 68. Other primary upgrade is a good cooler for how you want to use it. From there, stock internals and clutches are fine on them for near stock power, like say a 100hp tune or less.

Glad to see you make the smart Ram choice! As to transmission, extra cooling and additional fluid capacity are the key and are very important especially for towing loads. Install a good Earls fan forced transmission cooler and a PML extra deep finned aluminum oil pan. Happy motoring....

Good for you man I may think the mega cab dually is the ugliest truck ever made proportionally wise because they don’t make that in a long bed, but your truck you seam stoked and that’s all that matters! Hope it brings you no issues and smooth sailing in your adventures!!

I agree, it don't like the overall look of it, but it's a sick truck either way!

There is a company, I think in CO, that will convert a mega cab into a long bed by extending the frame if its a must (I love my mega cab and would consider the stretch if I get a heavier goose/5th)
Upgrading my new truck and trailer setup. much better.
