My new zero waste and minimalist hair care routine. Since having a buzzcut, the way I care for my hair has changed a little bit. Today I want to show you everything I do to keep my hair easy and healthy. I am going to show you my shower routine, how I wash my hair with hair soap using a no-poo method, but still using soap to get rid of grease. I also want to share why I quit the water-only method and why it didn't work for me.
Zwoice: zwoice.com/en/
the platform I mentioned, where I got my soap. I couldn't find the exact same one anymore but I love their concept, so check them out.

I am a hairstylist in the US and I attended a zoom product knowledge class yesterday in which the owner of this company brought up the science of why water is actually the enemy for your hair - not shampoo. The PH of your hair is significantly lower than that of water, so even though water is technically at a "neutral" PH level, when it mixes with your hair/oils it alters the PH to a level too high and causes more harm than good to your microbiome. This is why most professional haircare is formulated to be at a lower PH to match your hair and not disrupt anything. You could test the PH level of your water. The higher the number the more alkaline; the lower the number the more acidic. The PH should be balanced somewhere between 3.5 and 5.5 and anything above or below that can cause damage to the hair and scalp. The cuticle of each hair strand will constrict at more acidic levels and appear more smooth and shiny while anything 7+ will cause the cuticle to expand open (think pinecones) and may appear more frizzy. According to this science and studies this brand has done, the less you wash your hair the better hair you'll have - they recommended using a couple of their products that are completely waterless to freshen the hair for as long as possible until you HAVE to wash it again (a tonic spray to keep the scalp clean and hydrated and powder to absorb excess oils) just for reference. Definitely not saying that's the only way, just another point of view and some science.

I buzzed my hair and keep it short : it is so relieving and freeing each time I cut it. I love the sensation, and wear hoodie or cap when I am too cold. I use natural soap bar (Alep) and change sometimes for a solid poo bar to avoid the reactions of the scalp. I also use sometime few drops of essential oil (tea tree or lavender) and massage my scalp: it is natural, healthy and calming. I also intend to keep my hair very short as I think it has a very good effect on me.

Loved this video. And I completely agree that there sre other things that we can focus on to minimize our footsteps. It’s not necessary to make your self-care more difficult than it needs to be. You already doing so much to better this planet and make your life easier.. I say until there is a better solution it is totally cool and already very progressive to use hair soap as opposed to plastic bottled shampoo.

I tried washing with water only for about 6-8 months. My hair was greasy, also. I tried brushing it more, using more apple cider vinegar, massaging my scalp more. The only the good thing with the water only washing...my hair never picked up odors such as cooking odors, cigarette smoke. Water only washing just was not for me, either. Enjoyed the video.

I shaved my head recently because of no poo problems with my hair. I have very similar hair to yours - thin (at least mine is) and SO GREASY!! Could not get no poo to work at all. I haven’t used anything except water and ACV for about 3 weeks and so far am loving it. My hair has only felt greasy once after not washing with anything (even water) for about 4 days. But usually I wash it in hot water only and then rinse with cool bottled water because of the incredibly hard water (I live in a country where you have to buy water gallons anyway). Then occasionally ACV if it feels waxy/I’ve been underwater in the pool. It really is working for me this time so I feel it could work for you with your now short hair. It’s so easy to scrub at your head with short hair over long hair. Basically, our hair types + long hair + no poo = disaster, but our hair types + short hair + no poo = success (in my case anyway)!

I appreciate your comment that minimalism is about making things simpler not harder. I also tried all sorts of no poo methods and nothing worked. I decided non poo doesn't seem to work as well for fine straight hair like mine. I now use Ethique bar shampoo 'bar minimum' which works for my sensitive scalp. I need to shampoo at least twice a week or my scalp gets itchy. I think stress makes my scalp react so perhaps healthy haircare for me is more about lifestyle than how I wash it :)

I feel the same about the effort it takes to do no poo. I have curly hair and washing it with rye flour and doing a vinegar rinse works well, but using a shampoo bar from a Zero Waste store works just as well and is simply more convenient because I don't have to prepare anything. Now I just kind of switch between them.

I have curly hair too, but we also very hard water. I've been trying the rye flour + vinegar rinse method, but, alas, after a good start, I'm just not liking it anymore. :( (I've been doing it now for 4 months)...I started using the vinegar rinse, because of the hard water (that my previous traditional shampoo + conditioner weren't handling well either) and figured I might as well try the rye flour method. I thought: washing less often (every 3-4 days instead of every other day) + even more environmentally friendly? let's try it! HOWEVER I feel like my hair/curls are often somewhat stringy even right after washing. And then there are often bits of rye bran, like rye flour dandruff...tja, not so fun, although very small (so not very noticeable even in my very dark hair) + easy to shake out once dry... Furthermore, the rye flour method feels like too much work to do every other day, like I used to wash ... so I'm thinking of trying hair soap or a shampoo bar. I think I'll try hair soap with the vinegar rinse first in the hopes that that works well our very hard water :)

I'm very lucky to live in a soft water area so perhaps my tips won't work (or you've tried them). My hair is naturally fine and greasy (I used to have to shampoo it every day). I have been using only water for several years now. I began with soap, then realized that it made my hair sticky so gradually used less. I tried using apple cider vinegar too but that made my hair more greasy. Now my routine is to brush my hair each evening with a Mason Pearson bristle brush (second hand). Once a week I brush it out before a shower and then with hottish water I wash it as if I'm using shampoo. I read somewhere that the 'grease' in our hair isn't oil but actually more like wax which can melt. If the water is warm enough then it can more easily redistribute and the excess can come off onto your massaging hands. My hair no longer seems greasy or fine (like it did with shampoo). It has much more body and no longer tickles my face 😂

I haven't used regular shampoo for the past 3-4 years and my hair (long, straight and shoulder lengths) is very happy with either Aleppo Soap, a mix of Bicarbonate of Soda and Lemon Juice, or Rye flour stirred together with water :) People often assume that No Poo means Water only which is not correct. Because it's possible to successfully wash our hair with other products such as listed above in my comment. In regards with the hard water, maybe it's worth thinking about a Britta filter or something similar.

It is literally genetics. There is nothing we can do about it. People think they can give all sorts of advice, until they deal with what it's like to have very greasy hair they won't understand. I tried for 15 years to go 3 days in between washing my hair, and it never once looked good without dry shampoo. Finally gave in and started washing my hair daily (advice from dermatologist) and it feels great and looks healthy. A 3 minute shower is all it takes to wash head to toe! (And I have very long hair!) Just my opinion 😊

I use 2 teaspoons of baking soda mixed with warm water to rinse over and scrub my scalp. If there are any oils in my hair it has a chemical reaction to make soap and the water washes the oils away. I have shoulder-length hair. For your length I would try 1 teaspoon. Really minimal cost and not much carbon footprint at all!

The goal at the moment is to finish all liquid soaps that we have at home and then transition to solid soaps...it surprisingly takes sooo much time to finish a bottle of anything, apparently we're not big soap users, and especially with short hair you don't need a lot of soap anyway. I get why you can't do water only with the hard water. I have horrible water where I am too and I'm using distilled water only my hair and face. It works amazingly and makes my hair feel so good that I don't even really need other products. I would suggest it but I know you are really dedicated to low waste and probably would never wanna use plastic bottles. This is working well for me now though:) and I did the buzz cut/short hair thing for a few years off and on in order to combat the water. It turns out I miss my hair now and need a change. I know you said you don't wanna do WO but the hard water is definitely what is most likely causing the main issue. It makes your hair so waxy and won't go away no matter what you do. My hair is naturally curly and so the hard water literally ruins and turns my hair texture into a different texture. I think if my hair texture basically stayed the same all the time I would feel differently but I miss my curly and haven't been able to see them in their healthy, true state since I moved to this hard water area.

Have you heard of using chickpea flour to wash your hair? I don't know how it behaves with very greasy hair though. Check the YT videos of Fairyland Cottage where she describes her routine. I have tried it (+ rinsing with apple cider vinegar) a couple of times and it worked well, but my hair is not very greasy anymore (it looks greasy 6-7 days after I washed it). I noticed my hair would get greasy sooner that when using traditional shampoo, but I never used chickpea flour for an extended period to actually know if that happens only while your scalp gets accustomed to the new routine. Right now I am using up my shampoo bar and next I'll be trying the chickpea flour again.

Have you tried using just bicarb soda to wash? It's method I used for along time that gave me silky soft and very clean hair and scalp. (I'd just rub around a tsp into your head while in the shower, rub into the scalp and hair well, then rinse off). You can also follow up with vinegar rinse to restore ph balance - I keep a spray bottle with apple cider vinegar and water in my shower, and just spray on my hair, give it a rub and rinse. This method would probably work quite well with hard water. It doesn't work for everyone, but I was really happy with the results, and like that fact that I was using totally natural products. Currently I'm using just water, with a vinegar spray/rinse from time to time, and am happy with it, BUT I do find that I get better results if I blow-dry the hair - if it air dries it looks a bit straggly/chunky. So for me - bicarb means I can air dry and have super silky hair, water wash means less product, but need to blow-dry....

@@jackyjpeg Danke! Ich werde vermutlich einfach mit der Haarseife von dm (von Speick) anfangen (ist zum Glück nicht so teuer) + dann schauen wir weiter. :)

Since you cut your hair, I have been thinking about why I personally don't find these buzzcuts attractive on anyone. My first association is that very sick people used to have their heads shaved - and there is still that stigma with cancer patients. The second is that societies have frequently shamed members by shaving their heads - including in the WWII (and post-WWII) camps, where people were sent and mistreated through no fault of their own. The last that comes to mind is my experiences with skinheads in the UK in the 1970s/80s who were frequently connected with right wing disturbance and violence and generally otherwise unpleasant. So if others who are double your age (like me!) do not react positively to your new hairstyle, they too may have associations like that which affect how they see you. To me, those are all valid reasons and should not be forgotten, erased or subject to re-education... The trend to shave one's head seems to be something younger women do - of course some older women also have similar motivation to you and enjoy the simplicity of the style. I wonder whether I am alone in seeing the historical aspect in the visual? Or am I simply prejudiced? It's certainly food for thought and has taken me several weeks to actually realise why it bothers me! (may I say I am not just criticising or being negative, I feel it's an interesting topic to talk about!)

I understand where you're coming from. I don't have these associations with my hair now but when I cut it the shortest (8mm) it was a bit short and I thought about similar things, especially cancer patients like I have been one as a kid. And the whole aspect of forcing people to shave in different oppressive circumstances is very sad, horrible and traumatizing and I do think it can leave us with a bad association. I really hope we can see hair as just hair in the future but I do understand that point and wouldn't think bad of a person who doesn't like my hair... But maybe it's also a possibility to loosen the stigma a bit, normalizing it... ☺

I am probably more than twice the age of Lia and have a natural buzz cut. On the contrary, I feel very positive and that this is very freeing. I don't want to manage so called "conventional hair cut " for the sake of the fashion or what the people may think about. I think that allowing oneself to free from the diktats of the consumerism (hairdresser, chemicals colors, shampoo, conditioners, etc) and the fashion is very courageous and instructive about myself. In fact I think that everyone need to search for herself : if you recognize your true self in the mirror and feel good about what you see and experiment, its totally ok no matter if you have long or short, natural or colored hair.

@@murielhecquet8823 Thankyou, I agree, and it's interesting to hear from others! Personally I am happy to have grey hair and prefer to keep it long, despite being told I am supposed to cut it now I'm older lol - for the very reasons you mention (the diktats); I find it very easy. I do understand that some women might find it liberating to shave their head, perhaps it's my strong interest in cultural history that gives more weight to my personal feelings towards buzzcuts.

@@Woeschhuesli Another point to consider is that shaving the head has a positive significance in many Eastern faiths. Buddhist monks shave their heads for this reason. It symbolizes freedom and letting go of material attachments... committing oneself to focussing on what's inside and one's connection to the divine. I generally think more of these associations when I think of head shaving or female empowerment, both of which inspire me :)

@@marysusansusan That's really interesting, I didn't know that. Yes, that would be a positive connotation, I guess. There are usually pros and cons to everything, I find!
