Nice video. I did a few years ago in a very similar fashion. Since then I purchased the snap frames and attach them to heavy-duty store-bought wood frames followed by the tape and lights. Works really well and saves me the step of building my own frames.
@MyNextProject

That works too. I don't think you save much if anything building the boxes yourself. And honestly, every way I looked at doing the poster besides a snap frame was more expensive.

My Next Project Yes, I think in the end doing it yourself the way we have doesn’t really save much. But there’s something about doing it yourself and spending the same money than buying it from someone else.

You've inspired me to build this. I'm actually on the last step of laying down the LEDs but I noticed voltage drop and dimming on the second strip that I connected. Was wondering if that happened to you too? I kind of see it happening but it might be the angle of the light box. If so I think I'm going to wire them parallel because that really bugs me

Don't think I didn't want to. It was ridiculous doing it on there. I haven't had a chance to edit the video, but I did make something similar to this, but I did not use any silver tape on it. I just left the boards either white, or natural and it turned out great. Thanks for watching and glad you like it.

I want to do something like this (but much smaller, my poster is only a little longer than an A4 piece of paper). Backlight options seem to be a dime a dozen these days, but I haven't decided what to use for my diffuser panel. Maybe an old fluorescent light panel?

+My next project: I've considered doing this but would like to know 1, how much did you save vs what you would have spent buying a light box? Five years later, I'm seeing light boxes go for 250 to 300 (specifically for 27x40) and 2, I've decided to go for light boxes that emit 6500 lumens to ensure that they light up regular posters as opposed to double sided posters. Am I correct that the lumens for this strip is 2800 since it reads 6000 kelvin?

Great video thanks for posting. I'm about to make 3 of these for our new cinema room and in the UK they don't make snap frames with a perspex back so I will have to remove the metal back and replace with customer cut perspex. I noticed you used an opaque perspex and not 100% transparent. Is this essential or can I use 100% clear ?
@MyNextProject
@MyNextProject 7 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know that it matters, those are the only options that I saw that was available. I think if you have 100% clear that you will most likely get a brighter looking poster. Thanks for watching, I am glad you liked the video.

Nice video and documentation. The LED power source block apparently sits on the floor with a cable going up to the light box. Your suggestions on how to hide this power 'brick' considering it's known for getting very hot? While beyond the scope of your project I was wondering how would you suggest dimming the LED lights (post power adapter)? And how would you go about wiring 4 light boxes along a 15' wall through a dimmable LED driver (with a 150 watt draw) hooked up to an LED dimmer wall switch? And BTW: Using 2 of the 16.4' LED light strings you suggest draw 24 watts each (48 watts total) vs the 36 watt power adapter you suggest.
@MyNextProject
@MyNextProject 7 жыл бұрын
I did not realize the power adapter was not enough for those 2 sets of lights, thanks for pointing that out. I don't leave mine plugged in all the time as it is anyway, so I don't worry about the brick getting to hot for myself. If you are wanting to leave this plugged in all the time, you could probably secure it to the top or bottom of the frame where it would have a little air circulation around it, as opposed to being inside the box. Might could even put a small spacer so air can flow under the power supply as well. As far as dimming the lights, if i remember correctly, you have to buy "dimmable" LEDs. Not all of the LEDs are dimmable from what I remember. I do know that they have nicer power supplies that you can have a switch on to turn the lights on and off and I am sure there is one that has dimming ability as well. As far as 4 separate boxes on a wall, that is going to be alot of wiring outside the box that goes along the wall to hook them up. You might could have each box start and stop with a secured the type of power supply you are using and just wire from one to the next. Or maybe having each of the 4 plug into a separate outlet or into a power strip would be best. Plugging 4 of these boxes up with 32 feet of LEDs per box might be alot, even if you had a big enough power supply. I am curious to see what you come up with. I would love to see pics or even a video of what you do. And would like to show it to my viewers.

I think it is the clear cover that is on the frame. It isn't laying down perfect so it kinda makes it look darker. Once I put the different posters in the frame I don't notice it. If you talking about with the actual poster on there.....that poster is very dark and only lets light through in certain places. I really think it is the camera angle and the clear plastic thing not being flat. Thanks for watching and for commenting.

Great Job. Can you let me know if this will support heavy stuff in the middle. I want to use this to take photos of large items. But they will be over the middle. Also can you send me how much of each items you needed or purchased. IE 2 LED packages or strips. Also can you provide the details of the box. Thanks
@MyNextProject
@MyNextProject 7 жыл бұрын
I will see what I can come up with as far as plans and box details. If i remember right, I used 2 LED packages and 1 roll of aluminum tape, and one power switch. I think I linked all the materials I used in the description. As far as weight goes, this boxes is already pretty heavy and I have not had any trouble with it at all. If you screw into the studs, then a french cleat system works very good. If you miss the wall studs then it won't be very strong at all. You can always add more than one brace to make it much stronger and hold more weight if that is what you want.

I just made an LED lightbox. My suggestions: #1: before attaching the back panel, put the foil tape on the inside walls of the wood frame first. it will be much easier to put on. #2: just follow the seams of the tape lines to lay your LED strips down. no need to make the black lines you mentioned. :-)
@MyNextProject

I would agree with both of those. Honestly, after making this one and a smaller one similar...I don't think there needs to be a crazy amount of LED lights in there. I think you could eliminate several rolls and be fine.

Nice video!! But i was wondering what the size is of the poster because insee some light coming out up and down of the poster.. im from europe so these frame are very very expensive to ship to. I wanted to use opal white plexiglas instead of the translucent back you have.. do you think that also will work? Thanks
@MyNextProject
@MyNextProject 4 жыл бұрын
The frame, I believe is a 27x40. The poster was like 26.75 x 39.75 or something like that. It was just slightly smaller than the snap frame. Rather than trying to get a smaller one and trim the poster, I decided to get the size i got and deal with the small amount of light on the edges. It is very expensive to build these. This is one of the most expensive projects I have built. Honestly, I don't know about the plexiglass. I looked into it briefly, but it was going to cost more than the snap frame so I dropped it.

Yes, if I make another one of these, I would definitely not go as deep. One of the reasons for it being so deep is for the french cleat to fit behind it, but even with that, I would still make it less. As far as the lights, I did not have a soldering iron at the time. And I am not sure if it would matter if you go horizontal or vertical. I think both will have good results.
