PRODUCT MARKETING OVER QUALITY! Today I'm doing a bit of a rant on the state of consumer electronics. HMD [the company that manufactures Nokia phones] is re-releasing their iconic 3210...and I have some thoughts! I also have some updates on my Nokia 2780, how it's been holding up and the damage the model has sustained since I bought it. What do you think?

Update: as I shared on my community tab- I dropped it while running out the door and it SNAPPED in half! the creepiest part is that it still rings...alarms still go off. It's the headless Nokia.

I had that exact same phone myself. When it was new, it seemed like a nice idea. However, I missed the ease of a smartphone, so I now use an iPhone SE 3rd Gen.

The plastics they use now in phones are so thin compared to the ones they used back in the day. I don't know when the shift changed.

One that turned up at Christmas 2002 also can play games downloaded using WAP (Wireless Application Protocol). Digital SMS (Small Message Services) Text. Not SMART phones was all there was. I enjoyed updating from the so-called analogue phones that had the annoying "staying connected until you hang up on both ends of the call" running away with your credits on Pay As You Talk.

My Motorola T720 from over 20 years ago was an indestructible device. I wish I still had it, because I can still remember the smooth action of the display and how it solidly locked into position. Perhaps the art of making a good flip phone was lost in the years since.

I personally still have a smartphone. I was a huge fan of technology growing up, so of course I like many of the conveniences a smartphone provides. But I'm totally on board with your desire to unplug, especially as i get further into adulthood. My smartphone is my only piece of technology. I've given up my laptop, game consoles and such. And I've unplugged by way of deleting my Instagram, Facebook, etc...

Having grown up with social media since its inception, as I get to 40 years old I've basically abandoned most of the mainstream platforms. Facebook is vile, Twitter (now X) is full of garbage. I don't want their messenger services annoying me. I do still love my smartphone though. Camera on my Pixel 8 is top notch, it has all my music, fantastic navigation, and if I'm out somewhere and have the time it's great to watch videos on. It's literally what I was dreaming of in the early 2000's when phones could just make calls and send texts. I think I'll always want a modern, feature packed smartphone, but I 100% endorse people cleansing themselves from some of these social media platforms.

@@OnTheRocks71 Agreed. My mind was blown when the first iPhone was announced. And the internet felt so wonderous when it was new. Social media made me begin to hate the internet and think it would ruin us all, but I've realized I can appreciate the positive aspects while setting boundaries against the negative.

newer nokias are not very durable, unfortunately. the build quality on their flip phones is especially bad, but the new 3210 is actually pretty great. anyways, their target market for these devices was elderly people and developing countries originally, with some nostalgic flair thrown in for the Originals series. however, their focus has shifted significantly recently, the results of which is the 3210's marketing and overall existence.

my only experience with them personally is my 8110 4G, which I've been using for several years now. it has some minor damage but it's holding up quite well! the slider mechanism is so durable it was the rest of the phone to suffer damage lmao

if you're considering the 3210: it's running the dumb S30+ OS that most of their feature phones run. your 2780 runs KaiOS which is a semi smart OS. so the software is completely different. keep that in mind. (no apps and no modern web, for starters) (also no WiFi, hotspot, tethering, and stuff) it has a 2MP camera (usually these phones get a 0.3MP one, your 2780 has a 5MP one tho), it has USB-C (same as the 2780, other phones of this kind used MicroUSB) and, it has an IPS display which means it's wayy better than the TFT ones we usually get. same resolution as usual though, but it's smaller than the one on the 2780 so larger pixel density. it has a pretty good build and keypad from what I've seen and heard! on my 8110 some of the clips on the back cover have snapped, but on the 3210 they have used a different design which is more durable. sounds promising! naturally a cheap flip phone is easier to break than a candybar brick due to the hinge mechanism, as you've witnessed... the phone is also pretty compact. i am not sure whether it's available in the US though. i think it should? but i heard it isn't? but it might? i dunno lol

at this point im looking at the OG iphone SE as a "retro" smartphone, my SE2's glass construction is falling apart on me and will need a replacement, SE3 would be a performance improvement but wouldn't last much longer in my butter fingers. so i picked up a cheap OG SE and it looks like i'll have to start watching battery replacement videos since it's pretty bad lol. my previous devices were Xperia Compacts and the basic Tmobile phones (LG F6, Alcatel OneTouch). wish small phones were still around. i'd still use the Xperias if they played better with the 4G towers and didn't keep stranding me on my travels. they were fine when the 3G network was still up in the US. now every Android is practically a tablet so I've defected to apple.

Back in the 90’s i had a 5110 and later a 3210 they were proper rugged bricks. More recently i use a nokia 130 for work as the battery lasts for days and does calls ok which is all i need but the build quality of these hmd nokia handsets are nothing like the original ones from the original nokia

Get a Ram from Plum Mobile. That was my first phone and it was built like a tank and I miss it so much I think once I’m on my own I’ll get a new one!

Unfortunately, Nokia quality isn't what it used to be. If you want quality you will have to spend much more money. For flip phones it would be the phones from sunbeam wireless or Kyocera flip phones.

I was born female and I identify as a woman in drag. Anybody can do drag. It’s defined as female impersonation/representing a woman form. Any gender/sexuality can do drag, although it’s more commonly associated with men (think ru Paul’s drag race) and I actually didn’t know that women do drag either until I started getting involved in the scene. I hope that answers your question. Happy to explain as I know this area of my life doesn’t always intersect with tech! 💜
