In this video I take a trip to Springfield Illinois and go the Springfield Train Fair.
Together we will look at what’s happening and then I’ll show you what I ended up with once I get home. I think I got a nice haul.
We check if everything is working and then put them on the layout for a short fun run
After that it’s a viewer’s layout video
If you’d like your video featured on my channel, it’s simple. Just email videos and/or pictures of your layout to:

Thanks, Papa. Hope you find joy with your new acquisition. The Marx models are undervalued. They would be a great option for anyone looking for an introduction to O. Ben with Benz Trainz was a good source for learning things. He was pretty clever, sometimes a little too clever. He got a few followers wound up for cannibalizing vintage Marx models by removing and bypassing the E units instead of servicing them. I always thought it peculiar that he would concoct some elaborate modifications to reinvent the wheel but thought that disassembling and servicing a Marx E unit was a monumental task that wasn't worth doing, when in actuality it's quite easy as compared to a Lionel E unit and restores it to like new operation. I have had E units so fouled that the motor wouldn't run because the copper contacts were so oxidized and burnt. I completely disassembled and polished all the copper contacts with a scotch brite pad and reassembled, and the motor ran like new without any E unit buzzing. The E unit is usually the likely culprit with most of the pre - and postwar models with buzzing or sluggish and intermittent operations. I heard Ben had enough criticism and stopped his channel. He kind of reminded me a little bit of Sid, the mean boy in Toy Story who cannibalized his toys, which made it entertaining to watch. Some people just can't be happy even if they're running their own trains. Although I did find it cringe worthy given how easy it is to repair them, sometimes I need my engines to run in reverse. However, his bypass method was very useful for a temporary solution and an excellent learning tool for basic electrical control to understand how to control the reversing leads of the AC motor armature brushes and fields. It's unfortunate as the hobby and the electrical industry can always use guys like him even if he is making bad decisions with his personal property. Just be sure to ask for the E unit he took out if you buy one of his engines and watch one of his videos to reinstall it😊.

A fairly decent haul. Always enjoy the videos. Great to see other layouts as well. Always enjoy seeing the street cars run. I have a couple of unique models. I have two of the MiniToys Brill street cars. One belonged to my dad and the other i just happened to acquire on a lark. When they run, the always peak everyone's curiosity.

BTW, the viewer video was awesome. that was a great use for a 360 camera. I tried an insta 360 X2 on my bike. There's a learning curve to the software, but the results are worth it if the finished product meets your needs. Seeing that footage makes me wonder if the insta360 go, which is not 360 has a wide enough FOV for "train rides". The camera is tiny. Off to do some research....

If I recall correctly, the bulbs on the Marx switches are tied to the track power. This is the reason that they don't light up when the track power is off, and the switches are active from the post terminals. The switches will need a little cleaning and lubrication, but they look nice. Also, this seems to be a great haul from the train show.

I’m going to another train show this weekend and while I’m there I’m gonna hunt for the control switches that have the three buttons on them. And if I get really lucky I can find the cover for the switch that’s missing it’s red cover.

Marx guy here, I use 30w motor oil as advised in an old service manual. I too was a Benz Trainz viewer, which lead to the building of my custom Marx Fleet as displayed in My two Debut videos. Stop by, visit, and comment?

Nice haul👍👍Enjoyed the testing segment too. I have the SP diesel version of your set from the fifties. It has metal (tab & slot?) couplers. Out of curiosity, do you have any kind of system or suggestions for organizing your spare parts?

I hope that you recycle in your town's recycle center rather than trowing the metal stuff into the tase. We all need to recycle those materials that can be reused down the line.
