I love the fact that even though Gemma is an established KZfaq "star", their kitchen looks like anybody's kitchen, instead of a "cooking show" kitchen at home (as some celebrities do)--inckudibg a messy fridge! 😀

In Denmark we “boil it in our bed”...yes actually. Bring it to the boil/simmer. Wrap the pot in newspapers and a blanket and put it to bed with the duvet covering it. Forget about it for a couple of hours. Perfectly cooked and no chance of burning. It’s an old farmers trick from way back when, when the mattresses were stuffed with hay which kept people...and porridge warm 😃😃😃

Omg, people laugh at me when I tell them how I make "Milchreis". I'm German and I grew up making it like that. Now living in France people eat it cold and I fight a lonely battle trying to convince my friends to eat it hot.

@@SanniW7 yes! i grew up on Michreis. Sometimes we had it as our dinner. There were 5 kids in the family and money was tight. My mother always used some beaten egg whites in hers. This made it more fluffy. Are you familiar with this method? Shes gone now so I can't ask her. I was wondering if this was a german thing. If so, how do you do it?

I eat it hot when freshly cooked, but there's always plenty left for next day which I eat cold.

Unless it's a cold morning, then I reheat it with a bit of extra milk and eat instead of oatmeal.

I haven't had rice pudding since my grandma made them for me when I was little. It looks delicious and it really makes the memories flow back to me. A comfort food indeed

I love my rice pudding créamy just like yours! However My Paraguayan husband likes it with lots of liquid......traditional in Paraguay and always served cold.

Hi Gemma! In Latin America (Costa Rica) there is a very similar dish called "arroz con leche" literally meaning "rice with milk". It is quite traditional, and some times there is also debate about hot or cold. I like both but prefer it cold.

This is our kheer ❤️ I'm totally on the cold rice pudding/kheer wagon! I love how food is pretty uniform in its shape and form across the world! As is it would make my day to be served with a bowl of warm kheer on a cold day in Ireland! Keeps us united in a way! Love from India!

If you use sugar/jaggery, cardomom powder, saffron(optional) and some nuts like pistachios, cashews, raisins etc instead then it would be called Kheer which is an Indian desert.

Sh. Shelin i don’t think you’ll get the creamy porridgey effect but it could work. It’d just be like rice cream soup.

In Norway we eat it hot on saturdays as dinner with cinnamon, sugar and some butter on top. 😊

Same in Denmark, though usually only around christmas. It's important to note that the pudding itself hasn't any spices or sugar. In Denmark we don't have milk and cookies for santa, but we leave a bowl of rice pudding for the nisse (elf) that supposedly lives in the attic of the house.

That is how we do it in my German family as well. There is no specific day or season we would it though. My absolute favourite comfort food. My sister loves eating it with applesauce which I feel is so wrong.... but oh well, everybody is allowed to do what they want. We just make it differently than Gemma... 😃

Same in Greece. We eat it hot or cold. Only cinnamon on top and a light dusting of powdered sugar. Whole milk, vanilla, and some butter make it flavorful.

I’m native Texan and I love love Warm rice pudding!! It’s just sooooo comforting!! We also add a lot of cinnamon and touch nutmeg!

Just got done making this and I’m sitting here enjoying my bowl! It’s amazing! I managed to find all the same ingredients at Walmart! Including the rice and butter!

In India, we call it "Kheer". We add sugar to make it sweet & also add dry fruits like Cashews & Raisins.

@@ninoskaalaniz6233 My goodness, it really is a worldwide desert. Indians and Pakistanis eat it as well. The Indian said they use cardamon instead of cinnamon (which sounds delicious btw, I'm also a massive fan of their garam masala blend).

Another youtube cook mentioned that rice pudding came from India to Britain in Victorian times, like kedgeree did, so we have India to thank for delicious pudding. 😊

My Mom made it in the oven too! The best. I love it with raisins too. Years ago I used to make it that way but recently I couldn’t find my written down recipe and searches online just where not the same! I will never cook it on the stove so I am out of luck until I find the right one!

Hi GEMMA, we love Rise Puding in Slovakia. My mum adds eggs yolks and meringue at the end. As a kids we use to eat it hot, now I like it both ways. Little George is so cute 🥰

My Irish great grandma always used nutmeg in her rice pudding and grandma would do her version in the oven. I am ashamed to say I never made it but will have a go.

I'm originally from Tyneside in Northeast England and my mother and grandmother both made rice pudding with nutmeg, and in the oven too. We often had it for Sunday after the roast beef dinner, in winter. And served with Carnation milk plus a dollop of jam on top. 😊

I eat it hot when it's done fresh n I also enjoy it cold as well. I love a good old rice pudding. In the Caribbean (well St. Lucia we refer to it as "sweet rice")

I'm an Indian from gauteng S.A. living in prague and we use cardamom and cinnamon in the pudding for Indian prayers especially. I'm gonna make me some to feel at home!

Rice pudding was a favorite dessert when I was growing up back in the 1940's and 50's, but where yours was always served hot, mine was always served cold. My Grandmother and Mother always served it cold, and they added raisins to their pudding while it was cooking. I've never had it hot, or with a dollop of jam, but it sure looks wonderful, so I would definitely try that. Looking forward to ding just that. Very nice video, and George is adorable!! 🤗😍

Thank you so much for your reply. I have never used the same cup for both the rice and the liquid. Who knew........we learn something new everyday. A friend of mine complained that nothing she baked ever turned out right., so I decided to watch her one day. She was using a dry measuring cup for everything! Now she is baking with happy results and has more confidence. Can’t wait to have your rice pudding!,,,

I'm happy to help, Ruth. But you are right, in baking you need to use different measuring cups for dry ingredients and wet ingredients. For rice, the ratio of liquid needed is based on the same cup you use in measuring the rice.

I grew up with hot rice, we baked it in the oven slowly and it got that nice skin on top. My Grandmother grew up in Wales, then came out to live in NZ so I follow her baking.

I’m Puerto Rican and we also have a version of rice pudding called Dulce de Leche. It’s very similar to yours and is traditionally served around Christmas. It’s traditionally served cold, but my sisters and I always snuck in a serving of it while it was hot, fresh of the stove. So I love it both ways. 💕

OMG! My husband and I are huge rice pudding fans, and have been married for 34 years. In all that time I've been on the search for the right recipe AND THIS IS IT! We live on a farm, and the guys are baling hay today so I'm in charge of cooking for them all. I made a huge pot of this, and simmered it like you said and it is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!! I just love rice pudding. We always had it hot when my Mum first made it but then we’d have the leftovers cold. She always made hers in the oven. I do too. Baby Georgie is beautiful 💕

My favorite dessert! My mom made it for me on Wednesday 1/2 days at catholic school. Still looking for her recipe, lost when she went to heaven. Love it hot , like it cold .

I'm 78 and live in central California. My father was a pastor and we were Irish American. Mother used to make this rice. She would put raisins or currants in and serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! You haven't lived until you've tasted rice pudding that way.

Looks awesome, definitely brings back nice childhood memories!! My mum would use nutmeg instead of cinnamon and evaporated milk instead of cream because cream was just for special occasions!! 😋

You literally just have to simmer rice in milk. Thats it! You dont need these extras like vanille extract or cinnamon ;) Just add some sweet stuff when its finished like cinnamon-sugar or apple sauce.

Strangly in my country we make something similar n its called kheer.. sometimes we grind the rice( leaving coarse not powder).. instead of cinnamon we add cardamom pods, sugar, cream, milk, vanilla essence.. we do eat it cold.. it taste very different cold.. yummy

My mom taught me to make it in a similar way but we cook the rice and milk in a double boiler. A half cup of rice and 3 cups of milk. I always throw in a handful of raisins to plump up or the zest of an orange or both. When the rice is cooked, I beat one egg, a couple of spoonfuls of sugar, and a teaspoon of vanilla in a small bowl. Then you temper the egg sugar mixture by adding some of the hot liquid to the bowl before pouring it into the rice. It becomes lovely and smooth and creamy. You can add a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg. I like to eat it warm after supper as dessert. However if there is any leftover. I love it cold the next day.

I have an English mum, so rice pudding was served warm. An American friend introduced me to warm pudding with maple syrup! Yummy!

both hot AND cold rice pudding are delicious! I had a creamy 'Greek' rice pudding which was to die for! But this sounds similar so I'm RIGHT there ready to try it! ♡ thank you for your great, fun videos! Organic and/or raw milk - cream - can be healthy...

I use all of those things too in my rice pudding BUT I use sweet and condensed milk in place of sugar, and being half Egyptian, we use either rose water or orange blossom water and sometimes garnish with toasted coconut,golden raisins, and pistachios or almonds with a sprinkle of cinnamon! Love your shows!!!

In Sweden, we cook it with milk and a cinnamon stick to a porrige. The cold leftovers, if you add vanilla sugar and cream, you get rice pudding. Sometimes with oranges, to get orange rice. My grandmother made that dor xmas. Mmmm.

Hi Gemma! Great dessert! I love rice pudding! Here in Spain we just call it "rice with milk" hahaha And we add a lemon peel to the milk for some light aroma (and we remove it when serving the pudding) I've never tried it with jam, I will do it next time for sure! What i love about planet earth. We all share the same staples. In the middle east we have a similar dish too. But i got my rice pudding from my irish mum yum yum. And definitely always served warm with a nice dollop of jam amd a cup of cha. Happiness.

Great recipe , ideal comfort food as we are in a rather chilly winter here in South Africa . For extra indulgence we add like a tin of condensed milk to the mixture

I grew up in South Africa and l grew up with these puddings. We baked ours in the oven and always fought over the brown edge that formed around the dish. Rice pudding is my absolute favourite. My 'scouse' husband also adored it,. eta : we used nutmeg in ours

The possibilities are almost endless. Sweetened condensed milk, which is what my family used, in rural Australia where my mother grew up everything was either tinned or powdered. You can also use coconut milk or cream.

Same in Greece. We eat it hot or cold. Only cinnamon on top and a light dusting of powdered sugar. Whole milk, vanilla, and some butter make it flavorful.

We don’t make rice pudding like you do, but we do have what we call milk rice made with coconut milk and red or white traditional rice . A must have for all holidays we serve it hot never cold with spicy sambol , one of my favorite dishes. I want to try your version of rice pudding with coconut milk and coconut cream. Hot when first made, cold thereafter. My mother in law made the BEST rice pudding. She put sultanas in it and it was divine. She didn't use cream, but a can of evaporated milk instead. I've never been able to make it as nice as hers, but maybe I'll try your recipe and see how it compares. If I can nail it, my son will worship you! It's his all time favourite food.

Definitely a hot pudding girl, with either blackcurrant or tart cherry jam. I normally bake it in the oven so it gets a brown top but that looks even better. Next weekend is going to be cool here so your rice pudding recipe is suddenly on the menu.

I made this today and it was delicious. I had some hot, some room temperature and some right from the fridge. I felt is was the least I could do for you. :) It was delicious all 3 ways but my favorite is room temperature with cold whipped cream on top. At first it was very loose and wet, which I am not used to, but after it was in the fridge it was what I have had in restaurants, only better. Thank you for yet another winner.

I’m from BC, Canada and this is exactly how I’ve always made rice pudding, and my mom before me. Always served warm, but I’ve never had raspberry jam in it before. I’m going to make some today and try it. Thankyou for the recipe!

Never had hot rice pudding, except eating whatever is left in the pan:) But you certainly inspired me to have hot rice pudding on cold winter days and making this a tradition. Now I'm waiting for winter (something I never thought I'd say!). George is sweeter than rice pudding, especially when he suddenly wakes up:)) His memories of rice pudding will include the 'battle' between hot and cold rice-puddingers, I guess:)) (I hope "puddinger" is not an offensive word, I just made it up. If it is so, I apologize... )

I was born in the UK and mum(war bride) and dad(Canadian) always made rice pudding and we always had it hot with a sweet topping, like jam. We moved to Canada and my mum, now 90, still makes it! Such warm memories and great comfort food. If there are leftovers in the fridge I will eat it cold but for me, nothing like hot!

Cold 🥶 rice pudding for sure But I feel like when it’s hot outside u can eat it cold and when it’s cold outside you can eat it hot 🥵 but I prefer cold I didn’t know people eat it hot

In Indonesia we have black rice pudding. It's basically black rice with sugar and water (and a few pandan leaves as aromatic), cooked until it's like thick porridge. Serve in individual bowl, than add thick coconut milk before serving (I like to add quite a lot). You can eat it warm or cold. The combination of sweet gooey black rice with slightly salty coconut milk is delicious. Black rice is also full of nutrition.

I like cold rice pudding and I also like warm rice pudding. My favorite is a custard-based (with eggs) baked rice pudding. Caramel topping is nice, or a brown sugar topping that is flamed.

Replace cinnamon and vanilla with cardamom powder and voila you'll have the famous south Asian desert "kheer", grew up eating kheer on like a weekly basis.
