DnD stories are fun, especially when your party has no clear moral code. I feel bad for the creature, but they did give it some soup last session.

Once, my party decided we much preferred the mutant bipedal sewer rats (mbsr) to the quest giver that had set flamethrower traps on the way to his sewer base, so we teamed up with the rats instead, and got them jobs at the post office. Our DM was only mad that we made a better quest.

Still one of my most memorable NPCs in my campaign was a random Boggle the party ran across who wore a bucket on his head so they just called him Bucket and briefly "adopted" him as he was lost from the rest of his people. He proceeded to be a general nuisance for the majority of his time with the party but for some reason it's one of my most memorable NPCs in my head, it's the best when improv makes special moments and characters like that.

My party loves Friendship is Magicing everything they can. I recall they took sides regarding a Skin Weaver (Grimm Hollow Monster) And one of them started working with the guy (Appreciating a fellow artist) while another went to go call a Monster Hunter to help flush them out. The monster hunter was basically Father Gascoigne from Bloodborne and set the Skin weaver's shopfront alight forcing them through a backdoor before cornering the party members and the Skin weaver in an alleyway. They incapacitated the two, tied them up and gave them a choice, they stop killing and they'll be let go. Gascoigne was brought in as a bounty on Werewolves (It's in Kartakass) and the Skinweaver joined a Player made NPC who was a Changeling who made costumes, plying his trade with less morbidly collected materials

I currently have a campaign going in my sci-fi D&D world with 4 players, one of which has a pet giant bug from their homeworld. By the end of the second session, they had a pet living rock they called Steve, a weird bone-eating slug they keep in a jar, and a strange monster girl version of another monster they've fought a few times that kinda just ran off while they were asleep and has been accidentally helping the party on their travels. I am fully convinced that by the end of the campaign, my party will have a full on cat café worth of weird monster pets.

Yo, if at some point the party does give the Banderhob a name, you have to give us an update! Personally I'm hoping for Fromge, but Dumpy or Bucephalus would be acceptable alternatives. In all seriousness though, this is great, and building a settlement sounds like a great story hook for a sandbox campaign, as it lets the players do whatever, whilst also giving them a bunch of things they would logically to build the settlement, that you can then prep for.

A while back played in a game where we got to a herd of sheep and the druid spoke with them for answers. They told us about a cyclops who would kill them occasionally by throwing them against trees. Well, we attack and murder this cyclops, who turns out to just be their shepherd and a well respected member of the local community as a wilderness guide for a dangerous nearby trail. The locals weren't too happy.

I like the idea of cursed characters, working on a mage characters that used to be a barbarian. After a monkey's paw type wish backfires, the barbarian wishing to be able to use powerful magic, he's transformed into an old, frail, wizard. Given high intelligence but only with the knowledge he already had from his life as a barbarian. Now too weak to even lift his battle axe and as ignorant to magic as your standard barbarian, the world is now terrible and dangerous in ways he never considered in his former body, that of a mighty warrior. Just a jerk wizard who can't even read and is terrified of his own shadow... gonna call him Perplexed the Disoriented Wizard.

I had an encounter with a group of Kenku who, because they were excellent at deciphering writing and whatnot, were being employed as alchemists making drugs. The party showed up, blew up their lab, NEARLY wiped them all out in one hit, so they all just immediately surrendered. They ended up taking pity on them and told them to head to their camp. They were a little troupe with crossbows, who could help out a LOT with combat encounters. I ended up giving the leader the name "Shuffles", and it became a tradition that they would bring him whatever parts of creatures they killed might be neat for him to experiment on. They even gave him a nice little alchemists cart!

So about a year ago me and some friends were playing a D&D campaign, and we had stumbled across this god who could grant wishes, and I wished for a new NPC to join us. Turns out this god is a bit of a trickster and the NPC we got was this annoying brat noble who wouldn't shut up. eventually we made it to the nine hells and encountered a horned devil, who took the bard up about 200 feet in the air and was going to drop him, so I said "Hey if we Sacrifice the noble to you will you let him (the bard) free?" and everyone agreed that she was annoying af so we were able to convince the horned devil to sacrifice her. this was my first D&D campaign btw.

My party kidnapped a drunk guy from a bar once. He was only meant to tell us (drunkenly) about a local haunted mansion, but then the sorcerer was like "can you show us the way?" and then proceeded to carry him around and protect him. And then just kept on doing that until we got to a ship. He took the drunk guy with him, onto the ship. The drunk guy does not mind in the slightest and has become a sort of weird cryptid for the rest of the crew, always drunk regardless of how much booze he's actually had. The DM fully and throughrouly did not expect us to just take him with us, he was a plot hook. And now he's family. The barbarian took to calling him "Scooby Lewis" and attempted to sell him at least once (it didn't work).

One of my players recently became a secret intellect devourer because the party decided to be murderhobos that day. So the campaign is supposed to be a thieves guild campaign that takes place primarily in a city. There are three players two human rogues and a hobgoblin artificer. The human rogues are named Elliot and Gert while the hobgoblin is named Egoc. In a previous session Gert managed to compromise the thieve’s Guild’s hideout (a tavern where every corner is the dark shady corner) by leading a celebrity gladiator to it. So the party was tasked to go up a mountain and enlist some Dwarf stonemasons to construct a super cool new hideout and keep their lips shut about it. While I have a few encounters planned to add to the world building, I also have the party roll two d10 on the Xanathar’s encounter tables to ease up on session planning. I have planned that when the party goes to long rest on their way back the first one who takes watch will be approached by one of the dwarves and promptly stabbed. The dwarf in actuality being an intellect devourer who has a buddy hiding in his bag looking for a new host. (I had ways to eject the party from the encounter if things went belly up.) So on their way down the mountain I have them roll on the encounter table. Suddenly a CR 6 monster appears before my level 3 party. The encounter table came up as a cyclops. I think quickly of what it could be doing there. Ok it is a peaceful cyclops guiding its herd of giant mountain goats home after a day of grazing in the hills below. My party then begin talking about killing it. I begin to consign myself to tpking these fools. They set up an ambush and deal about thirty damage to it with one of them (Gert) even throwing some dynamite. Combat starts and the rogues cunning action hide. Elliot far surpasses the cyclops’s perception check whereas Gert spectacularly fails and gets taken out by a rock. Egoc soon is also down leaving Elliot alone to abuse cunning action hide and the cyclops’s low perception to whittle down the monster. The cyclops having no way to find Elliot begins grabbing the unconscious party members and makes a break looking to scale down the mountain side. He’s leaning over the edge about to head down when Elliot gets the killing blow. I now make Egoc and Gert tell me odds or evens to see what happens to them as the giant holding them dies. If they call correctly then they land on the mountain path, if they call incorrectly they fall off the mountain side. Of course one calls odds and the other calls evens. Gert goes off the mountainside. He doesn’t fall far enough to kill him outright and I assure him that he is not dead. As those words leave my mouth however I remember the intellect devourer encounter and the fact that I now have two unconscious player characters ripe for the devouring. So instead of taking his character from him I now have him playing as an intellect devourer spying on the city to make way for an illithid invasion. The worst part about this is that his intelligence score has been reduced to 12. He is playing an Arcane Trickster. I have to give him a headband of intellect. Later that session they blew up a troll with dynamite and captured a Pegasus using paralytic poison.
