How To Grow Pear Trees From Seed - Month 56
I started these pear trees from store bought seed (D'Anjou Pears) on 7/10/16. They are now 56+ months old.
In this video, I'll catch you up on the 3 pear trees and also show you my other pear varieties, Bartlett and Orient - which are now 6 year old trees.
I'm hoping the largest D 'Anjou pear tree can FINALLY set some fruit (now that it has flowered) and finally grown enough to handle the Texas Summers and weathering it's third "winter," fighting fire blight, and acclimating to the Texas Clay.
It's been a fight getting them acclimated after spending almost 8 months indoors. I am currently giving them a half dose of tree and shrub fertilizer (14-14-14) and doing my best to keep them well watered and free of pests, like aphids and white flies, as well as keeping my eyes on their leaves for any more sight of the dreaded fire blight!
I plan on being more diligent in keeping this series updates throughout the year, so stay tuned and join me as we see them go from seed to fruit bearing trees - I hope!
Here is the entire series from episode 1:

Hi Rob. One thing you might want to try is to graft 1 yr old branches from each of your seedlings onto your mature trees. This is commonly done in fruit breeding programs to see what fruit the seedlings produce faster.

How exciting. Thanks for the update. I'll he so excited for you to get fruit. I just bought a couple semi dwarf trees at lowes and planted them sunday. I also have some cuttings of another pear tree from someone local that I planted. Hoping I see some growth soon. I would personally dig up that tree that's dead. Looking forward to an update.

Nice update Rob! Looking forward to seeing my pear tree one day flower! It is two years old now and the leaves budding for spring. New to the game... But I managed successfully make 10 cuttings from the tree from seed and they all have taken really well. Do you know if one day I could pollinate between the same tree cuttings? Although I read somewhere they need pollination from another cultivar (variety) to fruit well.

Your trees that are Dying in the same spot over and over is because of the dog pee run off and Charlani spraying of "Simple Green" in the dog's gravel area. Meanwhile get a level and check your run off in that area, would be my suggestion. Dog pee is devastating to tree roots.

Could be and likely is the culprit. The other two trees do well over there though BUT luckily we have allowed him (Kai) access to the entire year now so not so concentrated to one spot. Thanks brother!

I was just going to comment the same exact thing and saw your response at the top.. I've trained my dog to go to the bathroom in a very small dirt area next to my lawn. It seems better when its dirt and not gravel because it soaks right into that one area... No dog better be messin' with my lawn, not even my own!! 😂

Don't plant anything in that area again. I have one place in my orchard where a highly transmissible fungus took hold. I had to dig up my Methley plum tree & burn it; roots & all. My agriculture extension warned me to never plant another living thing in that spot.

I dont think its the dog unless its being fed wet food as dry food is not acidic. My feeling is the gravel is the problem its keeping the ground cool and the roots dont know what time of year it is! Roots need air and feed my suggestion is all your plants need mulching with fresh or old grass clippings 2 inches at least this will also feed the plants and encourage worms or as you call them night crawlers. By the way its always a good idea before planting out to disinfect the soil of bugs and bacteria with a mild solution of jeyes fluid or similar disinfectant you can also spray all your plants with it also in leaf! If you have Aphids spray with used dishwater. 👍

I just found this channel through your RFT channel. I'm a landscaper of 16 years and RI master gardener and Precious Metals lover, so you are now my favorite KZfaq content provider! Lol. Your citrus tree vids are especially great since I have a potted 10 year old grapefruit tree that I have kept under 4ft by training the branches and pruning (I guess it could be bonsai). However it has yet to produce fruit. It seems healthy and no signs of stress. Any thoughts?

Maybe cage it off and try flushing the ground with a lot of water. Hopefully the flushing with wash out anything excess out of the soil. Another thought is researching the tree and the soil types it prefers might tell you if you need to amend your soil there or change your water scheduling.
