That's me when I was a 10 year old boy playing at a piano recital. I was very nervous and I had obviously exercised too little. Poor me and the pure horror for my parents, who filmed this video. Very funny though!! By the way, I am now 24 years old and stopped playing piano after this recital...

I can't help wondering if playing from memory contributes to this; maybe it wouldn't have happened if he'd had the sheet music in front of him. I don't quite understand why there seems to be so much pressure to play the piano from memory.

@@michaeledwards1172 i was never classically train. Never had a teacher of any kind for any of the instruments I play, so at least in my personal case memorizing was not an option but the only way. I always ran away from sheet music. I can read music though its just that I do it so slow I loose track of what I'm playing in the first few notes, I had always wished that I had classes when I was a child but my parents could never afford such things if i did I would probably be a monster in the instrument by now

There really was nothing wrong with this - it was fine! Technically and rhythmically OK, hands well co-ordinated, even tone throughout... This would still get a good pass mark in a piano exam. @PianoandKeysStudio
@PianoandKeysStudio 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewdolphin344 He did. Don't worry - it's fine 😎. This morning I remembered another memory lapse I had with a Rachmaninov Prelude in front of a shopping centre as late as 11 years ago (so, after 30 years) - even more encouraging 😀. After a day or so, I thought nothing more of it - sods law, basically. These days I find that the more often I practice a piece with a purpose, the less likely it will happen. So much to say on the subject which I'll cover in a later video - but that's not likely to be for a while, yet. Memory lapses can happen anytime, anywhere... looking at one of the finalists of the 1996 Leeds Piano Competition - despite a major lapse in the famous 18th variation of the Rachmaninov Paganini Rhapsody, he still earned a respectable place in the final and is still giving concerts in prestigious settings. For a 10 year old boy the experience is likely to be more devastating (probably why 30 years later he titles it 'My piano horror')... but I'd estimate for something like an ABRSM piano exam he'd get at least something like 21-3/30 for it (pass mark is 20) and, if everything else went well, still get a merit or distinction.

I was expecting something way worse, like cussing and slamming the cover down or peeing your pants from nervousness, but you did great :) not every little kid can perform and that's totally fine. I had a couple performances like this when I first started, I was playing the sugar plum fairy on my 2nd year of piano lessons when suddenly I stopped for a good 5 minutes not knowing how to proceed. During this time the audience started to clap and I signaled to them that Im not done yet and my teacher ran over and told me how to start but I was so nervous I couldn't hear a thing she said. Finally I started to play and I finished my song unhitched after that. I didnt quit though and now I'm 17 and a piano teacher. Its never too late for you to start playing, even if its just for fun. Its a good escape to the world.

It’s actually a fine performance. The issue is children rely on muscle memory and then when up on stage everything goes out the window. This used to happen to me as a child and my friends all the time! It doesn’t happy anymore because I can read music. If he had music and was reading it he wouldn’t need to rely on any muscle memory and he could perform all day without losing his spot. His rhythm and even the style is quite nice. It was a fine performance despite getting stuck with the memory :)

It sucks to see that people deem themselves "untalented" after not reaching some arbitrary level of proficiency by some absurdly young age. I played for maybe a year when I was 12ish and then I quit thinking I'd never be any good. I picked up piano again 2 years ago at the start of Corona without worrying about how far behind I was given I was already 19 essentially starting from 0. It became my whole life, and I'm hoping it'll some day turn into a career for me (I already do gigs part time). This is honestly kinda sad for me to see, because this could've been me, it almost was. In many ways music saved my life, I'm glad I didn't let my lack of ability prevent me from re discovering that passion. Maybe a little deep for a comment section lol but this just really got me thinking.

This wasn't as bad as I thought! You continued after your fist initial memory slip and managed to continue the flow of the music without stopping for too long during the performance! I actually think it was well executed! Memory slips are completely normal, they happen not only to beginner piano players but also to professionals as well. It's absolutely normal and you shouldn't feel too ashamed about that and let that get into you. I think it's a tragedy that you stopped playing piano after this recital but I just want you to know that this is absolutely normal when dealing with anxiety and pressure in an audience and sometimes having the occasional memory slip! Obviously you shouldn't continue with a hobby if you don't enjoy it, but there's more to piano than performing random finger exercises that, honestly, don't sound that good. I hope he's able to pick up piano again, or find something else he enjoys for its own sake.

I had a similar experience at the age of 14, playing "Turkish March" of Mozart at a piano recital. That made me stop playing as well. My teacher used regular recitals to keep her young students motivated practicing. I absolutely don't agree with this method. Your performance was good. I didn't even finish my playing because i couldn't remember the rest when I began to struggle. I just gave up and went back to my seat, lol. To keep going on is the golden rule during performances on stage. So I think you did quite well :) I plan my comeback for my "piano career" after about 10 years though :) It's never to late to finish what you began once ;)

Actually, you could've been good with an engaging teacher. This could be the only reason why you quit. You had the ability and I think you should start playing again. Music is good for the soul, especially when you're the one making it.

Hey, you got through the whole piece and maintained your composure! Don't shoot yourself down! Performing is hard and causes memory slips even when you think you have practiced adequately.

Hey he messed up that's it. You have no right what so ever to say he is the worst! Either you don't know enough to see and feel stage fright or you. If i was him i would have run off crying but he stuck to it and finished the piece. Wait,,, My piano horror? Is this you? If so then i don't see why you are saying this about yourself. Either way if it is you or if its not you take it down or rename it please. This is not the worst.

When you're a performer you need to make sure you can play the piece you're playing perfectly 100 times in a row. So this kid kinda shoulda practiced before he went up there.

Omg! Brings me back this memory of mine where I also had a recital and I didn't attend it because I didn't even know any of the notes at all because I didn't really pay that much attention to my teacher.. So the next day my classmates and my piano partner asked where I was and I had to lie to them and I also had to lie to my great-grandma about missing the recital. Hours later our teacher found out, so I had to play our whole music the whole entire class time in front of everyone. I didn't get to play anything and I had to have the teacher beside me play the music for me and I didn't even touch the piano keys at all.. SO EMBARRASSING T-T After that horrible nightmare, I decided to learn how to play the violin, and I like the violin more- XD

You had great posture and showed magnificient composure in a situation that was far more trying for you than probably for the most accomplished player there. Despite the performance not being what you intended I really enjoyed the hesitations, uncertainties, and repetitions that turned a bland piece into something of interest - and thank you for having the courage to post it .

The thing is, for a 10 year old (who I assume was very worried about the performance) it is very good. I have vivid memories of myself almost crying because even though I’d practiced enough for it to be done perfectly eyes closed, I had terrible stage fright and my fingers were stiff so it went badly.
