My Porsche 993: Should I SELL It or MODIFY It? The Answer

The Porsche 993 provides pure driving enjoyment. There's absolutely no doubt about that.
But as much as I love my Porsche 993, though, I have begun thinking about selling my 95 Polar Silver Porsche 993 coupe and then starting a hunt for an example in a bit of a rarer color. My 993 is mechanically sorted and has some very cool performance mods (Fister Stage 2 exhuast, Bilstein PSS10 coil overs, short shift kit, FVD golden rod and M030 sway bars) but I feel like it isn't as unique as I'd like. So, indeed I had begun looking around for another 993 coupe.
But, thanks to the input of channel viewers, as well as some deep introspection, I've decided to take a different direction with my Porsche 993 instead of selling it.
In this video, I discuss the direction I plan to take my '95 993 with the owner of a Porsche performance and mod shop and I'll also share EXACTLY how much money I'm willing to put into the car to get it perfect for me.
I also need viewers' help. As I mod my 993, I'd love to ideas for improving the car. So, if you have experience doing this kind of a project (giving a 993 a more aggressive look or improving performance with aftermarket modifications), let me know in the comments!

In my opinion, add lightness. If you do a rear seat delete, don’t add a roll bar if you don’t plan to track or use a seat harness. It would just add weight, and the inability to easily throw luggage back there for a road trip. Granted they look cool, but won’t help performance in any way. I do like the idea of seat inserts, door cards and square weave! Been wanting to add square weave to my 964 for some time. One tip there, is when they replace the carpet, have them rip out the old foam insulation underneath and update to a new material like dynamat. You’ll save quite a few pounds in that process as well.

Skip the graphics. Keep it clean looking. Sounds like a great plan. I also second not messing with those seats. Someone in the future might want the original patina. Take them out and store them and modify another seat. Same thing with the door cards, if you change out, save the originals.

Like that you are keeping the 993. The discussion about the carpeting and seat inserts has me thinking about mine. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Glad you liked the Continental radio route. Think that you will enjoy it. I put the little Porsche decal on mine as well. Turbo bumper is a very nice upgrade. Definitely see this car as one that will stand out from a distance, and even more so close up.

I’m glad you’re keeping your car. Here’s what I’d do. I’d spend the majority of your budget on cosmetics. Over 90% the time you aren’t driving it. However you always see the car when you walk by. If the car looks the way you want it to, you will get more overall enjoyment every time you walk by it. More then just when you drive it. By all means, if you are going to change the paint color (I personally don’t like wraps, that’s just me) don’t have your new bumper installed until you make the color change. I’d have the whole car repainted with the motor out, and when that’s done all your rust issues will be identified and corrected. If you see some rust there is usually a lot more unseen. Get it all removed so you won’t be dealing with this issue, headaches, and more expense later. It’s better to do it right the first time and cry once over the cost. I think the inserts in the seats would add a lot of “coolness” to the interior. If the side bolsters to the seats need replacement, I’d be careful about just replacing that section of leather. Even though the leather on the rest of the seats might be okay, it’s hard to match the patina of the new leather with the old. You might not notice it at first or from a distance but eventually YOU will and it will drive you crazy. Worse than Purgatory. Play around with your choice of carpet color and texture. It’s amazing how contrasting colors can transform the look. Lighter carpet colors really brighten up the interior and can be very stylish (My 1987 Carrera has burgundy carpet with black mats. I’m thinking of putting in beige Coco mats). Can’t wait to see what you eventually do. Great channel.

Good that you're keeping the car. If you sold it, it would only be a question of time before you bought another one. I wouldn't bother with the roll cage or mess about spending money on a stereo, not when a good exhaust will give you the only soundtrack you will ever really want to listen to. On the exterior, maybe part colour code your wheels with a nice Carrera or Porsche graphic. Get rid of all the orange from your lights and maybe push your wheels out with spacers just a little bit more to make the thing really planted. Not that keen on the ribbon brake light personally , but that's just me. No matter what you do just make sure you love it, it's your car!

You might also want to consider a clubsport steering wheel. Smaller diameter than the 996 wheel, bit bigger than the momo which can obscure tops of dials. I’ve got clubsport my 993 and it’s perfect for me. If going with the momo maybe also consider offset for the hub depending on your eye line for top of dials. I like the seat insert idea (maybe houndstooth to match new carpet). Would also do back seats to match and skip the cage unless you are going to track a lot more. I’d keep the door cards and upgrade speakers. Awesome sound inside and out. Another cool idea others have done is adding sound deadening under carpet and behind door cards if you are doing these anyway. Apparently this really allows engine sound to come through. Looking forward to seeing progress!

I had a 1995 silver manual coupe just like yours. It had about 116K miles. Although the car ran strong and seemingly flawlessly, I did a leakdown test which found an 85% deficient valve. My mechanic recommended a full engine rebuild. As I could not afford that, I sold the car on to Gutherwerks in California for a decent profit. Your 993 with its current mileage is long overdue for an engine rebuild. These usually run 20-$30K, but you will have a car that is worth $80k at that point. Do not put a single cent into unnecessary cosmetics until you have done some engine diagnostics to this car.

So glad your keeping it, that makes too much sense, good decision!! My thoughts for ya: Front turbo bumper change is a great mod, that’ll look awesome! Interior: If you want to hot rod it, the Rs door cards are aggressive and starts saving weight. Rear seat delete with NO role bar, (keep saving that weight!) Center seat change to cloth seats are a nice change (i did that in my ‘81 to houndstooth) and the ‘96 soon to convert to tartan) Light weight wheels are great too, on my 96 I did Forgeline ML (3 piece wheel looks great!). Your 3 spoke steering wheel is great, maybe re wrap with contrasting stitching would look great. At night, HID HEADLIGHTS!!! A MUST and also looks so much more modern and big difference for night driving. I like the “singer style” side graphics (I did that on mine to match my break calipers (black stripes with white Porsche). (I love the stickers, they fit the hot rod part). Cabie hood rally lights would be a bold look that no one else has and would set yours apart (this is a love it or hate it, but when I saw the signer with them on at the Luft 5 event, wow, looked amazing! ) Last, if your doing side graphics, you can contrast that with different color side mirrors.

Great mods. Have the rear over riders paint matched to the rear bumper for a cleaner look. We don’t have that issue to contend with in Europe but it would look great. Maybe the side skirts from the turbo to give it that slightly lower look without actually going lower? My two cents worth anyhow. Can’t wait to see the end result 😊👍

There is some good things on your car already: the interior color is black. Definetely the best color on 25 years old car. The original 3-spoke steering wheel, much nicer than 4-spoke. 18" wheels, cooler than originals. Sun roof. The exhaust is better than original. Hard to come up with anything to improve because the car is in some neat condition. The exterior color may not be the best possible, but I wouldn’t like to paint it a different color because it’s the original color. Maybe something upgrade to motor?

Nice to hear you keeping the car. Area you are looking at is spot on. However I noticed you mentioned wanting a more aggressive package. If so consider RS engine mounts or C4 version improves the drive no end, gearbox mounts, LWF for sharper response, consider turbo wheels ( you need to be mindful it’s the right one for NB car), steering wheel MOMO proto typo 7(Momo the co. can do bespoke service for you down to the last detail and not much pricier- but you’d need to wait for 2 months approx), Big brakes(red), RS airbox or just drill the ones you have, coil over suspensions, try to do HID headlights, change seat belts to Red or blue (easy to do and cheap to change, happy to suggest how you can do this in more detail), door cards with matching red or blue pulls. If budget allows ITB. All of the above changes the feel of the car making it a little more special with your own touch. Side stripe in CARRERA makes it even more nicer, also make sure your exhaust heat shield is in good nick, they do fail and you’d suddenly see smoke coming from the right rear of car by wheel arch. Just my 2 pence worth. Good luck as always.

Great vid. I have the same car with the same mileage, 150,000 km. Honestly, I have been thinking about doing the same thing as you so following with interest. New to your channel so not sure what you’ve done but a couple of thoughts. First, have you replaced (or added) an LSD? If the car had one, it is probably shot by now. Guards seems to be the brand of choice. Second, the seat foam breaks down over time so definitely recover the seats. It will make it feel like a new car. Like the rear seat delete but roll bar isn’t a good idea if not tracking the car. Just me but I wouldn’t upgrade the exhaust further. Nice the way it is. Love the turbo look front bumper. Consider deleting the rear bumperettes at the same time. Although it is tempting, I would not sacrifice the airbag (assuming they don’t have an expiry date?) for style. Good luck with the mods. I will follow with interest.

Will, great choice keeping the car. That rear glass will be more expensive than $400, I can tell by your video. The new outer seal will not just snap in until the metal framing is fixed. And that’s when you need to go cheap with a bunch of sealant or go expensive with new glass. The new SW Chip (911Chips) is super easy to swap in on the 95’s so have fun. I found that I had to add octane to bring up the gas to 93 or there will be low end knocking when you get on the throttle. The roll bar and the graphics...Meh. I guess you will look cool at the cars and coffee, but it’s not my favorite. And the front bumperette delete looks like a lot of work for such little extra joy...plus it will eat at you when the rear bumperettes are still there so go ahead right now and double the budget! I love your content and I love how you ask for opinions. Those are mine. No hate at all for what you are doing and I can’t wait to watch what you are going to put together!!!

Hi, fellow Porsche/BMW M car KZfaqr here in New Jersey. Nice 993. I had a Polar Silver 993 Turbo, with fister mufflers and PSS9 suspension. It also had the RS door panels with the pull strips. Great car, started to have oil leaks and power steering problems at 80k miles. Probably needed turbos rebuilt and a top end rebuild so I Sold it for double what I paid for it 5 years earlier. I bought it back when they were cheap. Great car...That steering wheel you have is from a 996. I had the same wheel in my 996 C4S. I recently bought a 2017 Miami Blue manual Carrera. I love the color, the turbos, and the rear wheel drive. I am looking to buy a 997 Turbo manual in the future. Let me know if you know anyone selling Cobalt or Aqua blue. Take care.

Fun video Will. The upholstery area in that shop is impressive. Based on the items you talk affirmatively about, I would guess you have $10K worth of mods. The seat inserts would be a great bang for the buck, as would the steering wheel. I’ll bet the turbo front bumper with front brake air scoops will be a game changer for the car’s appearance. I did a Steve Wong chip on my 964 - also a good bang for the buck. As was the case with my car, depending on what other performance mods you’ve done, a custom Steve Wong chip might be a better bang for the buck. Don’t know if you want to expand your budget a bit to include modern coil overs. I did KW Onyx variant III two way adjustable. At between $5 & 6K installed, they are probably another of the best bang for the buck performance mods. Curious to see how you decide to shape the project.

The single best performance option for the money is to do the FD Motorsports shifter + Golden Rod from Darin Fister. It will be about $700 + an easy installation. I live close to Darin's shop and just had the shifter put on my 993 4S (110k miles) and it totally transformed my car. Your stock shifter is worn out by now and the stock shifter on 993's are sloppy and not performance oriented to start with. Plus, at some point you will need to get the bushing done anyway as they wear out on the stock shifter. The FD shifter & Rod are a fantastic upgrade and also a preventative maintenance item that should be addressed. I'm turning my car into a driver/track car and it is a must have. If you can't add it to your budget, skip the Fister III's and go for the shifter. You will be very happy that you did.

Neil Pack couldn’t agree with you more about the golden rod and the SSK. I was lucky in that the previous owner put them on. I did just order a stage 3 exhaust from Darin (swapping my stage 2 core) and also his transmission mount for the car. I have been told it’s a great mod. His stuff is great.

I would also suggest skipping the rear seat delete and roll bar. Instead add the Fabspeed x-pipe with high flow cats. It will add horsepower and make the Faster II's you have sound even better. The front Euro bumper is a great idea. (I am doing it to my car.) But I would also have the bumperettes removed from the rear bumper (also doing this to my car). That way both of your bumpers will look really clean.

Tilted gauges are awesome, can't do that in a 997 or newer car. Will my feeling is you know what you have in old silver..993. Your car is a beautiful car. Keep it and slowly make the mods you would like. If i owed it I would do nothing but maintain it. Keep the car.. and do the obvious seals and small corrosion issues. Some would die to have your baby.. the little things wouldn't cost that much. Some of it you can do yourself.. beautiful car. A few upgrades such as lighting and a few minor mods that would change the overall look if the 993 but bring that girl into the digital future. 964/933 is what Porsche is.. With Porsche, the sky is the limit and money isn't an issue.. lol 🙂

If your'e over 5'10," tall get the Mod 07 steering wheel, no script/graphics on the car. I'd consider Cayman 981 seats vs cost of reupholstering seats. Steve Wong chip is a must. If your gonna go light weight door cards then remove/sunroof delete. Everything else toward suspension.
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight! Found some killer seats that are gonna be great. Will share what they are in my next vid on the project. Glad to hear about the chip. Can't believe I have waited this long. PSS10's are on the car and they are GREAT. I think I've decided to leave the doors alone with the exception of the carpet replacement on the door panels.

Pepita all the way! The matching Prototipo wheel will look the part too. Hey if you haven't checked out Car Bone's site oh buddy lots of sweet retro ideas for the 993! Those RS Style buckets with Pepita on their site?! Would look sick. Good decision keeping her. And I would say "No way"! to Porsche Scrips personally. I just think they don't look right at all. Again, to each their own though! Nice car.

I'm liking most of those ideas. Big fan of seat inserts, especially on solid color interiors. Not loving the roll bar though, if it's not a track car why pretend it is (same with the graphics). As far as the steering wheel goes, I'd keep the airbag and that nice 996 wheel (but then I'm biased).
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
John Connor the 3 spoke wheel is ergonomically fantastic but a little too stick looking for the direction. I have gotten a lot of disagreement with the rollbar idea so you’re not alone in your thinking along those lines.
@johnireland1629
@johnireland1629 3 жыл бұрын
I like the guy's ideas on the front seats and door cards and carpets. I'd leave the dash as is and I would not remove the rear seats but give them the same treatment as the front. A roll bar just makes the back area useless. I'd pass on it. I'd also give second thoughts to the front bumper. The originally bumper lines are just perfect for my taste. I'm also not a fan of graphics on these cars. Less is more. After the above work, I'd spend the money on mechanically perfecting anything that might need some work soon. Maybe putting on turbo brakes, or valve guides and seals, or light weight flywheel and clutch, or maybe new plugs and coil packs. I liked the guy's idea of the RS door cards. Would light weight RS glass work on your car? Saving/cutting weight is great horsepower and will give your car unique performance. But whatever you take off your car, save. Don't do anything that would make the car no longer a great daily driver.

I would pass on the half roll cage (unless you do decide to track the car - in which case you might have to reconsider the exhaust if the tracks locally have noise restrictions). Deleting the rear seats to free up load space isn't a bad idea; I would avoid side decals (always think they look tacky on a 993) and final point, keep the existing front seats in case you decide to put them back in the future and buy some tatty ones to refurbish.

Houndstooth YES! Black n White NO! Houndstooth in blue and grey and carpet to match the blue. No point in a cage if you don’t track it. Leave your door cards. I think you’ll get more bang for your buck if you focus on suspension instead of increasing power.

These are all personal decisions, therefore not necessarily debatable. Yet, I will say that cars that are kept all stock tend to keep their value much more than modified cars. This would be something to consider before starting this endeavor, particularly if not keeping the car indefinitely remains a consideration. Of course, it may be too late for this comment at this point. Good luck.

That’s pretty much where I’ve landed. I already have a deep connection to the car for a couple of reasons. 1. It’s a 993. Enough said. 2. I have been through a lot with the car getting it sorted not to mention having some good times in it on road trips, “bonding” with it lol. So, after giving it thought, to further dial it in and make it mine even more just made sense.

It will definitely devalue it for a significant percentage of buyers. That said, this type of project will never amount to an “investment.” Simply fun and create a better connection with my car. It will also make it a keeper as it would be insane to sell after going through all of this.
