Hi man! I feel so identified with you! I have a small fiberglass sailboat 4 meters long and 1.7 wide, with a main sail and jib and with a 6 meter long detachable mast. I have the same fish finder and exactly the same Honda outboard motor as yours ( BF5A 4 stroke 5 hp second hand as well) and thanks to which I found your channel (thank you so much for uploading that video about the maintenance of the outboard because I'm new in the boating world) My sailboat is light (about 200kgs) and I launch it through a ramp every time and when I go fishing I don't put the mast on so it's just a boat like yours, only it needs a small trailer to transport but it can be launched and recovered by just one person... I prefer our choice over a kayak but every choice has its pros and cons of course. Oh and it's virtually unsinkable because it has floating chambers inside it's structure which can be used also as storage. I paid around 2500€ (2600$)for the sailboat with sails, trailer, motor and even lifejackets... 7 years ago. If you type " Pastinaca sailboat" on Google you'll see my boat, just in case you may feel interested about sailing (which is as much fun as fishing, I tell you) or buying a new type of boat...

Oh man… that looks like it sucks to clean all that back to its original state, I feel for you. I’m so glad I don’t own a boat anymore but so glad to see you making great content from a bad day. SO MUCH CLEANING. Very cool that so many people are helpful to help you and knowledgeable.

I had a 5hp tohatsu 2 stroke that I got for $300. It started with 1 or 2 pulls. I thought that I had a good deal till the motor started leaking water. They didn't flush the motor right and it had rusted through the main part of the engine. But the outside was in very good condition with no rust.

I will keep that in mind! I always try to flush with fresh water after a salt trip!

Those water cannon guns you buy for your kids work awesome instead of bailing water out

Bummer, it doesn't take much rain to completely swamp a porta bote. Ours is our daily driver so we keep it in the water pretty much all the time to.get to shore and back from our sailboat which we live on full time. I bail it out after every rain since we don't have a bilge pump system. Completely is not s good thing IMHO. There have been a few big rainstorms over the years that have totally swamped it overnight but the motor powerhead has stayed dry because it is under 30lbs and we don't keep a lot of stuff in the bote to weigh it down. With a bigger heavier motor like you have think about getting a big fender to lash under the back seat..That will give it enough extra floatation aft to keep the motor out of the water next time. One under each seat will give even more floatation if you continue to store that much gear inside. The best way to bail water out is with a plastic gallon jug with a handle that has the bottom cut off. A square almond milk or OJ jug works really well at the bow simply pushing it up and out the front using a back and forth motion. I can go from the bote barely floating with me in it to almost completely dry in a couple of minutes pushing almost a gallon a stroke every second. I've had to do this many times after a squall and have even done it in the middle.of a longer named storm while it was still raining hard to avoid it swamping. The best tool for cleaning the bottom is a stainless steel painter's knife scraper. The rounded cutout for cleaning paint rollers works perfectly on the black tubes. The scraper part on the end works well for stubborn barnacles and oysters but be careful not to scratch the plastic too much. A plastic Bondo applicator is more gentle on the hull and works decently.on softer stuff like sponges, grass and slime fuzzy. If kept clean the growth has a harder time sticking to the plastic but as it gets scraped up it has more to hang on to and grip harder. I clean our bottom about once a month and have seen it get much worse than yours did. It.really slows the boat down with only a 2hp motor.

My Porta-Bote folds up and hangs on my garage wall when not in use. No dock fees. It transports easily on the roof of my vehicle. It has wheels, so easy to setup at the car and roll down to the shoreline fully loaded, motor and all. No need to leave it outside. I thought that the whole idea of these boats was portability? Take it to the car wash and pressure wash it for a buck...

Well our pressure washers are like $10, but I agree with you for the most part. Keeping it in the harbor was just for 2022. A rare opportunity that I couldn't pass up. She is now back in the garage ;)

Where/how did you learn how to repair your outboard? I have an Suzuki that's out of warranty, so I'd like to learn outboard maintenance and repair. Any tips? I am not mechanically-inclined, have no experience with cars, etc.

I helped my dad with basic car maintenance growing up, but everything I know about outboards I learned mostly on youtube. These smaller outboards are pretty simple machines. The more you tinker with them, the more comfortable you will be. Remember, where there's a will, there's a way!

@@OffTheHookFishing Well, I took the plunge and disassembled my carburetor from my Suzuki. Cleaned all the gunk out, reinstalled. Also cleaned out the fuel tank that had nasty deposits and old gas in it. Put in new spark plugs and started on the first pull! So awesome! Just in time for rockfish opener in HMB!

Where can you dock a boat like that in the Bay Area?
@OffTheHookFishing
@OffTheHookFishing Ай бұрын
I specifically asked the harbor master, but look for "skiff parking." I think it is available at the san mateo harbors. not sure about others.

You think it’s good deal if I can get one of these 12 footers , build in 2003, no leaks, good shape for 600 bucks?

Its been a while since I've looked at the prices of used pbs, but I remember them typically being $500-1000, depending on condition. Mine is a 2009, so 03 definitely will have some wear. If it doesn't leak, it sounds fine. Just make sure to inspect the transom seam! It also depends where you live. In the bay area, there are always pbs on the market, but not the case for every city.
