A "quick" look at my LiFePO4 battery I use while out in the field. So many people ask what I'm using so here it is. I'm also showing my Battery Box Build. A fun project inspired by OH8STN, and hopefully this will inspire you to build your own, and share your experiences with others.
Here's a couple links to the batteries. Don't forget the bus bars and orange connectors. They don't come with the cells. There are also larger capacity cells if you want to go bigger.

Outstanding. The whole point of sharing those projects is to get others to build them as well. My mission is complete. :-) When I first started setting up the shack to run off solar power, there were also some practical reasons for doing so. My wife once complained about the electricity bill. She doesn't complain anymore ;) Then there's that lead acid battery myth. I guess you realize now they're two or three times the weight and only half the capacity of what they're said to be. So it looks like you've caught the bug as well. Sharing your video on my blog. Hopefully that'll bring you some more subscribers. Thanks for sharing, and for making my day. Btw, please put some kapton tape across the bus bars. 100A will make a heck of a bang. 73 Julian oh8stn

Haha I like big bangs! I def have the bug. I've done so much research on batteries before building this and then saw your videos last year and read your blogs and it just made sense to go this way vs something commercially made. Thanks for sharing and making my day good sir. 73 P.S. I'll look into some kapton tape.

I just got to say THANK YOU for making these videos. K8MRD, I discovered POTA because of your video and I'm going to dive right into that aspect of ham radio very soon. I've been licensed since 1988 but have been dormant for 7 years or so due to domestic/work life taking over. Now I'm getting my wife into the hobby, we're going to start activing all of the parks in our area. I have an IC-7000 with a buddipole and a couple of end-fedz wire antennas that I plan on using. But power was my concern. I've been looking at different things out there but saw you hold up those 4 38120S's in series and you said that would allow you QRO and I was like THAT'S IT! I want something light weight, compact, and easy to store that will provide me with hours of QRP, and acceptable QRO operation in the field. I then looked at Julian OG8STN's video on the build and I am very grateful for the articulate and well developed video on the buildout of this system. Because of that I'm going to follow both of your ideas. I'm going to build a small tool box/ammo box to build the battery system in to accept connections with lugs, power poles, and USB. I have a question though, You linked a charger on amazon. It cost 70 dollars. How long does it take to discharge and charge that setup you have using that charger? And on the solar panel side of it, how long does it take to charge up using the solar cells? Again thanks to both of you for videos. 73, Jimmy K5OP

@@nexusnrg Hi Jimmy, I am always humbled by such positive comments such as yours. I'm so grateful that I can give back to the community and help share what I love, much like others have done for me. Thats awesome that you and your wife are going to start doing portable activations. As far as the charger, I don't really use it to discharge but I can set the rate of charge. I usually only charge at 1 amp so depending on how depleted the battery is, it could take up to 10 hours if I ran it all the way down. The max charging rate for the charger is 6 amps so quite a bit faster. Less than 2 hours if it's flat. I usually use about 2.5-4 amp hours when I'm portable. I have never run out of battery while doing an activation but I would guess around 2-3 hours @ the 90 watts I usually run. Lower power will yield longer run times of course (which I am considering doing, maybe 50 watts) I also don't have any solar to charge this so I wouldn't be able to comment on that. I do know to be weary of the less expensive, seems too good to be true solar panels out there, especially on eBay. They most likely will not produce but a small fraction of the power they advertise. There is a reason the Power Film costs as much as it does. Anyway, I hope this answers your questions. Have fun building the battery/box. It's a great build. Thanks for watching and 73!

Nice one Mike. I put my pack in a molle pouch with the battery already shrunk wrapped and then wrapped in some thin sheet packing foam. The BMS doesn't get very warm at all under no use and the foam adds a thermal layer to keep the batteries from getting too cold. I'll do a video myself about my pack at some point. 73s and keep up the great work.

It has a quad band Chinese radio that does VHF/UHF and I have the 12 volt 7 amp/h battery built into it and have sockets for the USB system, a 12 volt cig lighter plug, some power pole connectors and it is all sealed up. No openings drilled into the 50 caliber ammo can at all, so it is weather tight. Great video again!! Juddie WD8WV

Building these power packs is a hobby in itself, pricey, but if you need really need 100W and light weight for SOTA, they are pretty good. I may have a dabble with the OH8STN setup, in the meantime, I'll stick with my SLABs, QRP CW and stay close to my car when operating! Thanks for the very informative vid 73, Keith
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah but its awesome! This 10AH prob weighs less than a tiny SLAB and you can get all 10AH's out of it. Plus, I learned a lot about batteries by watching Julians videos as well as building it myself. It is cheaper to buy one from Bioenno though. For qrp they make some great batteries for about $50. Although getting them to your part of the world is prob going to double the price just for shipping.

nice setup there, I would strongly suggest getting rid of the twist connectors those can work themselves loose, solder and heatshrink is the best way. also make sure the gauge of your wires carrying the current are all at least 14AWG becuase 20A is way too much for anything smaller. with a rewire that box would definitely be the perfect portable power station! great job

Mike, Great video. I'm going to build the same battery pack for my FT891 as you show here. I'm using the same BMS which has all the balancing circuits on the board. I just received the Hitec RDX1 charger in the mail today & have no experience with it. I assume you connect the BMS board at the load to the large DC output on the front of the charger. I have one question after reading the instruction book. What setting do you use on the Hitec RDX1 when charging these batteries? LiPO? LiFe? PB? or No setting? Did you use all #12 wire? I'm planning #14 in the balancing circuits and #12 for the load connections. Thanks for all your videos. They are very helpful especially because we run the same FT891. Jim - W3COX

Honey Brown!! Not real likely, but it is possible.

@@hamradiotube Understand! On a different thought... I'm thinking of buying a FT-891 to replace my Icom 735. (1988) It would have to do double duty. Home and portable. What do you think of the 891 if it was your only rig? What is your other rig? Tnx. 73 WB7DUO

It was my only rig for about a year. I used it in the shack and out in the field. It’s a great radio and should suit one well.

what do you recommend battery wise for air travel? I can only imagine what a non technical tsa screener would say about you battery pack build as perception is reality for most people in the world nowadays

Something that looks less like a bomb for one lol! I don't know what the capacity limit is but I think its around 10 or 12 amp hours. Check with the FAA and get a Bioenno.

Hey, one last question bro... That link to evcomponents.com for batteries. 10ah Headway... Are those new or used? Tnx. 73. I looked thru their documentation and found nothing.

Those should all be new. Mine were only a couple months old when I got them. They have the manufacture date printed on them.

Just received Yaesu FT-891, Dakota Lithium 12v 10ah and charger. Need recommendation for Charge Controller and Solar Panel? (Cheap ; ) First contact with new FT-891 was today on 20m dipole Baltimore MD to OK. Like your videos. . .

I don't even have anything good for solar yet but the Genasun charge controller looks like a winner. Buddipole and Bioenno also make ones that people seem to like. Not sure about panels though. Bioenno seems to be pretty decent for the price and I think Renogy as well. I have a Lot more research to do on those. If budget isn't a concern, then get the powerfilm 120W. Sold for the low low price of about $1300-1500! Congrats on the 891 and first contact too!
