Good to see your reel-to-reel collection! I had many of the same. Sadly, I couldn't find a home for them when I moved from Los Angeles to Palm Springs 3 years ago and had to throw them away. I had many Excellent dups at 7 1/2 IPS from AMPEX, A&M, and Columbia [before they went to 3 3/4 IPS in late 1969]. How I miss them! Thanks again!

Thank you for the video! It is excellent! I collect almost every type of recorded media and R2R tapes have a special place. Mainly, I have 4-tracks but I also have a file box full of quadraphonic tapes(which were all recorded at 7 1/2ips). I have 2 Beatles tapes in my collection, "Yesterday And Today"(curiously on a 5" reel) and "Sgt. Pepper's..."(unplayed). Both are 3 3/4ips. When you finish playing an R2R tape, you are supposed to re-secure the end with the sticky tape that it originally came with, or a substitute. This keeps the tape from unraveling. The tapes which are Dolby recorded are not meant to be played back with Dolby engaged. I find that is muddies the sound. I don't even turn the Dolby on when playing back a Dolby-ized cassette tape. Originally I started with a Sony TC-378, which was multi-voltage but set up for 50hz current. Luckily, Sony did have a 60hz pulley and they told me where to by it. When I got my TEAC A-2340R quad deck, I put the Sony in storage. I also have a Pioneer RT-909 in storage. Because it played the NAB 10 1/2" reels, I thought it was like an old Ampex full-track machine I used at a radio station that played both 7 1/2 ips and 15 ips, but it only plays 3 3/4 ips and 7 1/2 ips. When I start recording my 4-track tapes to digital, I will probably use it. You seem like a 1970's kind of guy, like me, so I would suggest you get some Moody Blues tapes. I have many of their albums on quad tape. That's about the closest you can get to the original session tapes. Yes, the Vanguard tapes are especially great in quad. Vanguard seemed to really get into quad. One tape I have is their surround demo tape.

About 2-track tapes can be tricky. "In-line" is 'normal', both tracks are in the same head. However "Staggered" means each channel is in a different head, so both tracks are not vertically "in-line" and you need a machine with that special play heads configuration, one head first and a second head next to it.
@anadialog

That is incorrect, you are talking about staggered heads. Stacked and in-line are the same thing.

@donoester6744
@donoester6744 8 ай бұрын
In 99% cases yes. Two exceptions being 1) quadrophonic reels, which have four tracks going in the same direction (4 mono tracks), which requires 4-channel tape heads for playback. 2) Tapes recorded on consumer recorders that allow changing between track positions 1 and 2 (out of four) allowing one to record 4 mono tracks, thereby maximizing recording time.

Sorry to tell you this, but 4 track pre-recorded tapes were NOT duplicated at their playing speed 1:1. Like all other pre-recorded tapes, they were duplicated on high speed duplicators, usually Ampex 3300 series at either 8x or 16x speed. In other words, the master tape ran at 60ips during duplication (and this tape was a later generation copy of the original master, and it was on 1/2" tape). The master machine typically fed five duplication machines. The frequency response of these duplicators is only specified to 15kHz, and is usually down 4dB at that frequency, and high frequency saturation was a common problem on the duplicates. The later Ampex EX+ pre-recorded tapes used a peak program meter to enable a higher recording level (at the cost of increased distortion), but these tapes are somewhat quieter than run of the mill pre-recorded tapes. So please stop spreading misinformation about these tapes somehow being real time 1:1 copies of the master - they are NOT. PS: Interesting fact - the EX+ tapes had at the end of side #1 (after the 25Hz auto-reverse tone), a recording of white noise which was used to check frequency response for quality control. The white noise should display as a flat line on an FFT analyzer.
@anadialog
@anadialog 2 жыл бұрын
Well, some surely were dubbed at high speed, especially towards the end of the 70's and 80's but most of them were dubbed in real time. That is also why they were so expensive. At least this is what I always have heard and read. Even Wikipedia states so but only for the early period, which already invalidates your statement that all pre-recorded tapes are dubbed at high-speed. Now that is surely misinformation. If you have articles and documents stating otherwise I would be more than happy to read them and hence, modify this video. Thanks.

@@anadialog I don't have 'articles' but I have been a recording engineer since the early 1970s, and have a large collection of 4 track pre-recorded tapes. I know the industry and how it worked because I was there, and lived and breathed this stuff. The problem with sources like Wikipedia is that information gets watered down and errors introduced over time as the people who dealt directly with the technology retire or die off. The reality is that ALL pre-recorded mass produced tapes like the 4 tracks you have which were produced in open reel's heyday of the 60s and 70s were produced on high speed duplicators. Open reel pre-recorded tapes were well into decline by the mid 1970s as cassettes became more popular, and by this time 3 3/4ips was becoming the default speed, at least for popular music. 4 track open reel tapes in the 60s and 70s were typically sold for $7.98 which translates to $27.63 in today's dollars. That is NOT expensive relative to today's premium 2 track 15ips duplications which cost $450.00. Think about it - would it even make economic sense to duplicate thousands of tapes in real time - an extremely time consuming and expensive proposition - this in a period when tapes and records were a commodity, and not necessarily an audiophile fetish? Surely there might be a few specialist recordings from small labels which could have been duplicated in real time, but these were NOT the mass produced tapes from major record labels like you have. Sorry, I was there. What you have 'read' is wrong. 4 track tapes were a mass produced commodity, and ultimate quality wasn't a factor. You might try contacting Jay McKnight (currently of MRL test tapes) who was one of the main engineers at Ampex and who was responsible for the EX+ tapes about this. He is on the Ampex email user group. lena.recordist.com/mailman/listinfo/ampex Also, this Wikipedia article on open reel tape has mention of pre-recorded tapes and the fact that they were duplicated at high speed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reel-to-reel_audio_tape_recording#Pre-recorded_reel_tapes
