I think an underappreciated issue is that lens get slightly bent when being inserted into new rims and are simply out of focus. I have bought two pairs of glasses with the same prescription, different frames and for one pair, my eyes took 30 seconds to adjust. For the second pair the dizziness, nausea and lack of depth perception simply never went away.

I just got new glasses first time, I'm 35 and I'm so distressed about them. I feel like I'm on a boat constantly I have small headaches, and it so frustrating when I'm looking at the screen and then needs to look further away, then it's blurred and wobbly. I think I will go and get them checked. It feels so bad 🙈😵

Ohh that doesn't sound good! If I may... is this new prescription a plus prescription with some cylinder power? If so it's not an uncommon result for first time glasses later in life (latent hyperopia) and the adjustment is an absolute bear to manage. For your own sanity, absolutely have them checked and verified by whomever made them and consider a refraction check just to be 100% certain. Sometimes things happen, and even more so sometimes for that first pair a compromise rx between vision and comfort has to be made. Either way, the big key is put them on first thing in the morning and wear non stop for fastest adaptation regardless. Mid day starts aren't as good. Let me know how it goes!!

@@ThatGlassesGuy03 Im on my second attempt at glasses. First time, I gave up after spending $500 on them. That was about 3 years ago. I just recently tried again and they have the same problem. Went back to have the rx redone and now they're worse. Astigmatism correction isnt working and everything is stretched to the left side. I feel like Im standing on a slope and almost fall down when I reach for something. Its substantial. I bought some frames off ebay, that had lenses in them. While the rx was wrong and everything was out of focus, I could see better with them than without and there was zero distortion. Im getting demoralized.

@Spring Bloom - sounds far fetched. $500 for glasses? Highly unlikely. Even high end stuff like Raybans are usually ~$300. Most people spend $100-$150 on glasses.
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 2 жыл бұрын
Try again Tom, ray ban isn't even remotely high end. I sell frames priced from 500-3000 before lenses, and I'm still in the kiddy pool of high end eyewear.
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like something is off in that situation for sure. Everything being slanted or stretched can happen with high astigmstism and it can take the brain some time to adapt to that. The better the lens design and careful curve choosing by the optician or lab can reduce that to some degree but most orders are button pushes with little if any thought these days, unfortunately.

Hi there, thank you for being a KZfaqr that responds to comments. Here’s my situation. Ive worn contacts continuously for 1 year & 1/2. I wore them 12 - 16 hours a day working ( KZfaq ) anyways. I have a pretty strong astigmatism in my left eye. Anyways. I knew wearing contacts that long couldn’t be good & I wanted the option to get back to wearing glasses. ( which I had worn for 5 years prior ) The first week I would alternate between my old contact prescription & the new glasses. I was advised to not do that by my doctor. ( I wish my optometrist would have spoken up ) Now I’ve been just wearing the glasses for about a week. I do noticed a huge improvement. However there is still distortion that uncomfortable & hard to work with. Also when I cover my right eye which has less astigmatism my left eye is still pretty distorted (fish bowl) & very slightly blurry when looking at far distances. will that ever improve? I’ve gotten retested to make sure the prescription is right & they confirmed it is. They are also looking into flat lenses for me with no curvature. What would you advise. Should I keep waiting it out? Before trying to change lenses. Thanks & sorry for the essay 💯
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
The non dominant eye is always slower to catch up, don’t worry too much about one eye over the other yet. Flatter is actually MUCH worse. Do NOT do that 🥶. Typically in difficult adaptation from contacts a steeper curvature is better. Part of the “spectacle blur” phenomenon comes from the huge difference in the steeply curved contacts vs the very flat ophthalmic lenses in the glasses. Definitely sticking out the first few weeks will help more than anything and once the adaptation period is over switching will be no problem :) I’ve seen as long as a month before but that’s pretty uncommon :) Good luck!! No worries on the essay, and thanks so much for your kind comments :)

Im very new to glasses. I just went from -0.25 to a new pair of -1.5 with 0.5 astigmatism. And im having a really hard time adjusting. My depth perception is weird when i walk and i miss steps. Tables look slanted and things at an arms length look smaller. Everything looks crisp and great, but its so hard to get acustomed. My eyes feel a mild strain from wearing them. Im going on day 3 of this new pair so well see if it gets any better, but my glass wearing friends say its not common for it to be this tough to adjust for such a mild prescription. I dont know if i should worry or just push through.

So for some reason, a prescription I had looked fine in polycarbonate lenses. I had a pair made with high index 1.67 material, premium anti reflective coating and they were made free form (or HD). With that pair, even though they verified that the script was right, things looked blurry to me unless I tilted my head to the right side. My depth perception improved dramatically and things were super clear at times. I wasn't sure if it was a matter of adapting or not. I had not gotten new glasses for a few years. My astigmatism axis changed by 10 degrees. I went for a second opinion. The optician heated up the frame and tweaked the lens giving me trouble (manually rotated it). Things looked less blurry after that and got better with time. I ended up wondering if I should have given it more time to adjust. I can see clearly with the way they are now. I guess if I can see clearly, that's all yhat matters. I do notice more clarity in the left eye still if I tilt my head to the right (images are blurrier when I tilt it to the left). Is confusing since they got the script right, it was done free form and I could see clearly through polycarbonate with the same script. I wonder if I should have just seen if I could adapt to these lenses even with the initial blurriness.
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 жыл бұрын
RX was very likely correct but I would bet money the measurements weren't. Whether it was the PD or fitting height. The lens twist by the optician tells me the actual prescribed rx being 10 degreees off just wasn't working for you, and making that adjustment is OK, but does throw off the rest of the calculations for the lens... at any rate for the poly vs 1.67, they're very close optically speaking, but poly bends light differently than other materials (not typically in a good way) I suspect the softer focus here helps you see more crisply... as backwards as that sounds, LOL. Here's the thing... vision is VERY subjective, and our brains all like different things. That's a chunk of why I'm so obsessed with this field. every single person is so different in what works and what they like :D
@1DangerMouse1
@1DangerMouse1 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 yeah. I see clearly enough that I am just going to stick with these glasses this year, I think. I considered having them measure my eyes in the frame again and make another pair. I have done that so much this year that I feel like a huge burden so... Lol. I appreciate your responses to my comments. I hear you about the subjective preference aspect. It is interesting that way. Despite wearing glasses decades, I have thought more about glasses this year than any other.

I’ve worn glasses for 60+ years I just wish the industry could admit that they make mistakes & do make mistakes quite regularly. There are at least 5 people that contribute to a pair of glasses. Odd that 3 pairs of the same script in the same frame are all different?

Got new glasses and having hard time adjusting. Been wearing glasses my entire life. Last pair i wore for 2 years (-7.00 both eyes). This new pair there was only a chang in the right eye (-7.25). Not sure if there was astigmatism changes in either eyes. But everything doesnt feel real, too sharpe, easily fatigued. Had ti have them remade already due to no improvement after 3 weeks constant wear. They changed how the lenses were made, but not the strength. They didnt want to re-check my prescription for some reason. Got new ones back and though they feel slighlty better, im still having issues of eye strain and things not feeling "real"
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 2 ай бұрын
Could be other factors here. If the lenses aren’t compensated and sit further away from your eyes than the old pair (or just in general) and the power wasn’t compensated for that movement it could be significantly overpowered. Optician should be verifying fit power and distances in this case.

An increase in cylinder (astigmatism correction) is by far one of the more difficult changes to adapt to and can take weeks. But symptoms vary, main thing is don’t touch your old glasses for awhile. Yeah, I have to switch back from contacts to glasses again because unfortunately contacts don't have prisms. I went to contacts because I worked with violent disabled kids that would break my glasses, but I don't do that anymore. My niece that I live with is the only one who does that now. I also play a lot of VR games and contacts were cheaper, but now I don't really have much of a choice. One time I switched back from contacts to glasses due to the price at the time, and I couldn't get used to the glasses because I couldn't see out of them, they massively screwed up my prescription so I went to another doctor all together, while they gave me a better prescription, they weren't all that great either, but I also needed a specialist to begin with due to double vision, which I didn't know exactly what it was at the time. I figure when it's blurry and I almost fall down the stairs, have an immediate headache and start getting nauseous, that's a massive issue.

Sorry I’m late to the party on this one guys! This is pretty multifaceted and tough to address here. But in general a combination of lens design and material are working against you. Even if everything is perfect, the brain doesn’t like it. This can come down to a range of factors to find the right solution, even when the glasses and rx can be technically correct. More commonly an issue for hyperopic (+ powers) eyes in larger lens styles.

I wore contacts for many years but around 2020 I switched to wearing only glasses. A year ago I got a new glasses prescription that took a week to adjust to. A couple months ago I started getting headaches from eye strain. I felt like it was a good time to switch back to contacts so I got a contact lens eye exam a couple days ago. The doctor initially gave me a really strong prescription but quickly switched it out for a weaker one because I couldn't see my phone. He said the weaker prescription will keep me from getting headaches, but I'm worried it's the wrong prescription. My left eye appears pretty blurry and it's totally disorienting! I got lost in the grocery store and I'm struggling to do any work because things just don't look right. I don't want my eyes to adjust to an incorrect prescription. Any advice?

I could never really see well out of the last pair but didn't realize it till I got my new pair. The adjustment has a lot of halo effect on fine lines and letters when my eyes are tired. Its so much better till the halos hit. I had a pair where I could see my eyeball on reflecting on the lens. It was so distracting I did toss those and just went without till I couldnt deal with it anymore. lol

So I noticed this when I got home, I’ve done some research, and it turns out this is a thing called the “fishbowl effect”, that many others have noted too. What I don’t get though, is that when I got my previous glasses 2 years ago, they never had this fishbowl effect (I’ve had glasses for around 10 years now). It honestly makes me feel a little sick, I’ve read that it may take time for your eyes to adjust, but I don’t know if that’s in the sense that your eyes will get used to the fishbowl effect and you won’t notice it, or it’ll go away for good, and I want it to go away. The center vision is sharp and clear, but if this fishbowl effect persists, I won’t be able to handle it, I’m willing to give it a few days and see how they go. I also read that it could be the frame that causes it, because of a curve? I can’t really tell. I’d feel awkward going back and telling them they don’t feel right when I just got them. Anyone else have any insight on this? Also, forgot to mention, it’s not the same prescription, as eyes change overtime. Many thanks
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 2 жыл бұрын
It's a combination of both lens size, lens curve, and frame shape. Accompanied by different fit parameters throwing your whole perception of the world out of whack so to speak. Sharp central acuity combined with fish bowl tells me most likely these are not compensated or digitally surfaced lenses, possibly not even aspheric, which amplifies this affect. You should absolutely see improvement within a week, but don't at all be afraid to speak with your optician about this 😁 most of us understand that it can be a problem whether avoidable or not varies with the circumstances 😎 For more specifically on Fishbowl affect, dive in with me here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qKeHZJVhm8vXgnk.html

So she said she would lower the strength of the prescription, and I’ll be getting them back soon. I also asked if the frame could have an effect on it, and she said it could. But the frame I chose was very similar to my previous glasses, and my previous pair seemed fine for me, so hopefully lowering the strength of the prescription will help.

Most likely just some slight annoyance from it sitting too close to the bridge. I’ve run across some to be bothered by this on rare occasion :). If it’s a metal frame adjusting so the paces are further away from the the frame will make it sit further from your face. It’s if an acetate or plastic frame, unfortunately not a ton that can be done to improve it without serious reworking of the pad area (or using stick on pads that fall off constantly).

@ThatGlassesGuy03

Hi Robin, Great question! There are a few ways to do this, one is checking the fitting triangle and balance point of the frame to take pressure off the nose (this one is a bit more complex and best for an optician). Also consider adding what we call a strap bridge. These are conversions that are longer but also add the top strap spreading out the pressure over the whole nose instead of just 2 points. A great alternative for heavy glasses that won't balance

I'm 18 and was using my old glasses perscription from when I was 9 until they broke a year or so ago, then went with nothing till now, and finally got new glasses and trial contacts a few days ago. I thought I was going mad! I wore my contacts for the first time, took them off to put my glasses on, and everythinf looked slightly distorted and wonky! Not enough to isolate the direct cause but enough for me to have this exact feeling you described- 'it looks pretty clear but i dont like it, its not working for me' It didn't help that I tried contacts at the same time, and they didn't distort like my glasses, so I thought I was going insane! One side of my vision does seem almost slanted. Both my eyes have taken turns hurting at different times. It's been so irritating!!!

Going to a larger frame yes, but typically it's a difference in the measurements taken or in the case of freeform lenses the compensation value and lens design algorithm used can occasionally cause this at first as well, especially if measurements are off.

My new glasses give me distorted vision which makes me dizzy,gives me nausea and migraines,even tho they are the same prescription as my 2 older glasses that I got in 2015/16,only 0.25 difference in one eye,so they are basically -2.5/2.25 - 2.75 and astigmatism. I just don't understand why am I getting this distortion,basically same prescription,I have ones thin and big glasses and never felt such discomfort when i first got them. Why am I having such hard time adjusting to new glasses? And the worst those 2 older glasses are great,just a bit scratched up but it doesn't affect my vision,I just got these new ones for outside wear and want to keep older ones for inside wear,the question is when my eyes will get adjusted to new glasses,will I feel discomfort wearing my old glasses? I know I have to constantly wear my new ones for it to pass,but is it worth it? to basically throw away 2 other glasses that are more comfortable for inside wear,they also have blue light and other protections.

Almost 7 years of wear at this point it's going to be very difficult to adapt no matter the changes. I’ve been wearing glasses in evening and contacts during I work. However now I got new glasses with only -0.25 difference ( from -4.50 to -4.75) and on my left eye it’s extremely hard to see to focus and I get double vision sometimes when I look around. I can see normal when I look at my phone but when I look at far away like the tv my left eye doesn’t sync with my right eye. Is that a problem with the prescription ? I’ve been wearing contacts and old glasses for 10+ years so I’m used to them so don’t think a -0.25 would give such a different feeling?
@ThatGlassesGuy03

The power not likely, but maybe. More likely is the fit, whack compensation values if freeform digital, erroneous measurements, a production anomaly, or some combination of these that just isn't meshing. If you're old specs were several years old, it very well could still be as simple as an adaptation issue, see this a lot especially with primary contact wearers that may go 5+ years without updating their "backup glasses". I would start with your optician and just have them verify everything is correct AND compare measurements vs the old pair. It could just as well be you got use to something whack in the old pair and now the new pair is "technically correct". I can't count the times I've had to say that last sentence... "yup. The new pair is technically correct, but here's the deal" 🤣.

I have worn contacts virtually all day every day for the past 18 years. Recently got new glasses with a new prescription because I was told to not wear contacts for a year while I get scans done before corrective surgery. I've got a pretty stong negative prescription -5.50 right and -6.75 left. So the distortion and fishbowl effect really bothers me. About 2.5 days in My vision has gotten a bit blurry almost like the prescription isn't right anymore. I am not sure if it is fatigue or the shape of my eye changing from not wearing contacts (If that is possible?). Either way I will be having my follow up in just a few days now. I am ready to just get it all over with.
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
That’s extremely common with hard lenses, but also can happen with extended wear of soft lenses as well. Which is why they need you out of contacts for the interim to get proper measurements. Without this stage you’ll have a poor result and likely be back in glasses. Definitely a case of trust the process here. Though I would discuss with your doctor the blur concerns as it very well could be that prescription is already wrong. Just the fishbowl or general discomfort wouldn’t concern me as much as the overall blur.

Prescription change, adjustment to new size, could be a host of things, and not much info to go on there. But, for occasional wear it's almost impossible to be sure. If you're not experiencing an issue in your regular glasses, I would be inclined to say it's related to the lens design and size, but it's worth having the glasses verified against the regular prescription by an optician as well 🙂

Hi! Thanks for this video and I’m hoping you can answer my question. I’m 27 and have been wearing contacts since around age 16. I’ve since had a pair of glasses that I used to wear on occasion, but never all the time. Those glasses never gave me any trouble. The past few years I ordered glasses online from various popular retailers and with every single pair I’ve bought I notice they give me peripheral distortion (mostly noticeable at a distance, not closeup). My eye doctor confirmed the RX’s are all correct and said I might just be noticing the slightest difference in how they treat the lens edges when finishing. I’m so frustrated because I can’t seem to get used to the distortion. But I never experienced this with my old glasses from my eye doctor. Any thoughts and have you heard of this before? Thanks in advance!

So this is actually a phenomenon known as spectacle blur, that comes from not wearing and being use to the way lens curves bend light with the increased distance from the eye. Modern lenses are all too darn flat in the name of cosmesis and exacerbate the problem. A lens custom made on a higher base curve or a standard old conventional cr39 lens will offer some improvement, but will still require time to get use to. I mention this in one of my two videos about problems with prescription glasses feeling wierd or can't see out of them, unfortunately I don't remember which one :(

Depending on the time and power since you’ve worn it can definitely happen. A bigger change especially for astigmatism that first day can be AWFUL. But yes, if things aren’t beginning to get better on day 3 definitely have them check out the prescription and or lenses just to verify before you torture yourself for a full week. With that much power every minor detail matters, especially that cylinder power. Honestly there are so many factors involved at this kind of power it’s impossible to help you properly remote, but to keep it general and light, any adaptation will take quite some time easily weeks instead of days. I would suspect even with the same rx you would experience this just due to changes in position of west and lens size. Those changes are enough to change the perceived power and change where the distortion is in the lens compounding the problem.

Now I have a new prescription and it’s a strong one and when I put my glasses on, everything looks like a fish ball, my head hurt, I get nausea and it feels like I’m out of balance. I’m scared that maybe the prescription is too strong🥺

I drive a garbage truck ten hours a day for work, so I can’t wear my new glasses and adjust to them while working all week. It’s my first time with glasses, and my right eye astigmatism is substantial, so the distortion feels pretty intense. If evenings and weekends are the only times I can wear them while adjusting, should I just wait until I have a couple weeks off work in July? Will the long days without glasses undo the progress made in the evenings and weekends? My depth perception is just not good enough yet to be driving a big truck through neighborhoods. Thanks.

This one is a bit tougher, and you may need to “stage into” the glasses so to speak. Have a chat with your eye doctor, because constant wear for that kind of first time wear is a must. They may have to find a “compromise” rx that isn’t quite as sharp to ease you into the full power you need. Basically sharpen things up a little bit make it more comfortable so you can still work and adapt. Alternatively, yea start wear first thing when you wake up on your day off and don’t take them off for anything. If it’s not quite enough on Monday but slightly better, see if you can tough out that day. Days 3-7 are where the most improvement come in with these things, and of course all of this assumes the rx is correct to begin with :)

Initially with new astigmatism it’s definitely normal, but it could also be the glasses are a bit overpowered or even lens centers misplaced. Depends heavily on the prescription and design. Personally I adjust at dispense but I can see where things are going to sit when we’re done. There’s something to be said about how the lenses will manipulate frame position and knowing the final end result to adjust your fitting measurements. I can tell you l most no one is doing that though. Most of the time it’s going to make minimal to no difference though.

I have new glasses, I’ve had glasses for 18 years. I got a new pair recently that are wider, and far away objects are hard to focus on, specially my eyes move around a lot, but my eyes seem to have trouble adjusting and makes it seem like far away things are blurry. As well I noticed that when I look straight through the lens everything is clear, but when I look through the lens around the edges everything is blurry. Not sure if it’s the glasses or if it just needs time. Been wearing them for three days now.
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 жыл бұрын
Wow 18 years?! That's a new one for me sir! Curves and algorithm calculations have changed dramatically in that time, and the sharp central acuity would lead me to believe the prescription is correct, but you need some time to adjust to the changes. After that long I would expect a 1-2 week adaptation period for sure! Things being blurry far away is likely a combination of changes in lens design and prescription as well as even just a new frame. The wider lens in particular will create some new distortions the brain will need to learn to manage, so you're definitely in for some adjustment time, but I believe if you stick with it you'll do great!!!! 😁 well, looking back... I missed what you were saying. Most of this still applies, but I would narrow that 2 week field down to about 5-7 days 🤣

@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 жыл бұрын
I had to look up those tokai lenses, so my assessment may not be spot on, but those are essentially a specialized filter designed to block a portion of the uv and blue light spectrum. If they do this via a laminate layer similar to polarized, it's no surprise they run a bit thicker :). In regards to the things looking closer, that could be a wide range of things, but will go away in a relatively short time as your brain adapts to the new image. It's a combination of the curve and thickness from that manufacturer inducing a bit more spectacle magnification 🧐😁

I hope you'll find my comment bcs I've been struggling a lot. So I got a new pair of glasses last week and the doctor said that my grade did not change much it's just that I had astigmatism. From 3.25 I had an additional +0.75 to my left eye; on my right, from 3.00 to an additional +0.25. I don't have any headaches or such and my right eye feels okay but my left one is the problem, it feels out of focus whenever I look far. It's like both my eyes are not helping each other. I'm giving it two weeks to adjust but is that worth a shot to persist for two weeks? I already talked to my doctor two times and they only said give it some time but it's kind of affecting my school & work...

Sorry I’m catching this one a bit late. Looked at it last week and cleared the notification without replying 🤦‍♂️. At any rate, yes with plus power changes that’s totally normal :). If no improvement in 2 weeks it’s definitely time to chat with the doc, but a week later now things should be MUCH better. The only concern I have is where you mention it feels like your eyes aren’t working together, but that can also be attributed to the larger plus increase in the left eye. Good luck!!

Have a chat with your optician and prescriber. This could be a range of issues that need a troubleshooting in office. A week isn’t. A super long time for first time with new and especially strong astigmatism, but it doesn’t hurt to verify. Sometimes it can just be too much to get use to, and has to be introduced in steps over multiple pairs of glasses and a period of time. Obviously we always want to shoot for best vision to start with, but that doesn’t work for everyone :)

If you don't mind what's your prescription like? Sounds like a combination of yoked prism in a single vision lens that's a bit on the large side along with new power change, but im curious 🙃. At any rate, the key is you see great with either eye open, meaning it's one of two things, the prescription would help determine which. Either the optical centers are placed incorrectly, or it's just the combination of larger lens size and increased power and the brain needs to adapt 🙂
