It is. But my question is: what if an order is not illegal, but it is immoral? Then you're still expected to follow it, with either no questions asked or no questions matter, right?

Not just US. I'd be surprised if this wasn't a rule for any military that didn't belong to a dictatorship. You are not serving your superior officer, you're serving your country, and the laws uphold your country.

@@IceMetalPunk It depends. but you will probably get punished for defying as if something is immoral or not depends on perception and point of view. if the order is to assault a position witch is in your eyes a death-trap and you think it is immoral to send your lads into that then no... you still have to do it. Personally i would maybe bend it a bit and do the order but interpret the order in a way to maximize our survive-ability for me and my men.

I disobeyed an order given to me by the base commander, who I outranked. I called a MAYDAY because I had no landing gear and as the pilot it was my job to get my crew of 13 safely home. The jet was old and expendable. The tower gave me clearance to land, and the second order via base commander was to land at Heathrow in downtown London. WT FUDGE was the last thing on my mind. The Queen would have had her knickers in a twist if I ruined a public airport and harmed civilians. I disobeyed, I was the only person injured and the base commander was court martial(ed) the next day. I have never second guessed the choice I made. The first lesson you learn is “ditch to the safest place possible”

Hey everyone, sorry to spam the comment section on my own video but I just wanted to say thank you so much for your comments. There are more than 1,300 comments on this video filled with kind words and support, and I'm so touched it made me cry. (T △ T) I was so worried people would think so poorly of me after everything I've been exposed to with opinions about the US military (especially online), but you all shared your own stories, many with people who were also in long distance relationships because of the military or were in the military or considering joining themselves. I feel really close to everyone after listening to all your stories, like I've just been talking to friends, especially since I can relate to so much of it! And if you didn't already know, the community here with our viewers is one of the biggest things that helped keep my spirits up when I was apart from Jun since no matter how I was feeling I could just get online and immediately talk to tons of people who were always friendly. I just want to show my appreciation. Sorry for getting so feel-y. ;_;

The two most common questions I'm getting now! 1. So what are you doing now? As you can probably expect, I'm a little tired of being constricted by rules and regulations, so I'd like to work for myself for a little while! I'm planning to focus on little side-jobs and KZfaq for now! 2. Will you and Jun have a ceremony later? Jun's dad seems to want us to, so I think we'll end up doing something small. I'm not big on ceremonies and I definitely don't want to spend much, so hopefully it won't be anything big. But of course, we'd make a video! :)

My boyfriend is in the Air Force and I laughed so hard when you said they're the nerdy branch. He started playing D&D while deployed and one of his best friends got me into Minecraft and when we went to visit him after he was stationed we mostly just played Minecraft. I haven't met a single person he knows in the Air Force who isn't a total dork, it's amazing. And I feel like no one likes being thanked. My sister dated a marine who was deployed to Iraq in the heat of it and even he didn't like being thanked even though he was infantry. This just made me love this channel a little more!

The Merovingian most military MOS are not actively outside all the time. Even as an infantryman, i spent plenty of time in the COF with my thumb up my butt waiting for someone to tell me what my next task was. And tons of people are d&d nerds. There were like 4 groups on stewart when i was there that ran different games during the week. I dont think she was saying everyone was, just that a majority of younger folks in the military these days play games, ttrpgs, and tcgs. I played d&d, mtg, and video games and i still worked on my own car and did shit regular men do lol

Fellow Air Force veteran here. People tend to either love or hate military life, and you can't necessarily know how you'll like it until you try it. Personally, I hated it with the passion of a thousand burning suns, and when I found out I was getting separation orders, it was one of the happiest days of my life. Like you, I feel weird being thanked for my service. It was a job I was compensated for, like any other. But I'll say I admire you for honoring your contract even though you could have gotten out of it. One of my roommates married a man in a distant city and got pregnant just to get out. The joke was on her, though--if she'd held out a few more months, she could have gotten out via force reduction (it was the early 90s) with all her benefits.

Rachel & Jun I have a generic question about your service experience; My 'clique' (for lack of better words) and I were in NJROTC in high school and NROTC in college, and despite 8 years of combined ROTC experience for quite a few of us, officer commission wasn't an option for most of us. (Those of us with high scores on our ASVAB and/or exceptional record during ROTC terms, were offered opportunities to apply for an MOS/NEC/NOD that provided for officer commission, though it wasn't a common thing.) Most were offered accelerated Enlisted ranks at best. Was there something specific you did to bypass Enlisted ranks? My son is now in high school and contemplating JRTOC, and if there is a track I didn't know about that can keep him out of Enlisted status, then I would be most grateful for the information! Thanks! (Not that I frown on those who enlist, it's just... well, he's my Baby, and I want to put as much distance between him and harm as possible, while still allowing him autonomy in his choices)

@AndyLifeInVideo 9 жыл бұрын
Tenshi Chan - Getting a 4-year degree in science, finance, physics, etc. would definitely be a good start. I'm not too familiar with all the ins and outs of ROTC. Being enlisted isn't gonna keep him any more out of harm's way than being an officer TBH. We're all in the same boat (literally and figuratively). In any event, I feel pretty safe here, and if stuff goes down, I'm more prepared on my ship than in my apartment or wherever.
@duskshadow25
@duskshadow25 9 жыл бұрын
Tenshi Chan Hey Tenshi. I know this is kind of late, but I only recently just found this video and happened to read your comments as well. To answer your question in regard to ROTC, the best way for your son is to have a college degree, meaning a bachelor degree from a university within the US - preferably major in engineer and science and math related area. Those are the top demanded jobs not only in the civilian world, but also in the military. Another thing is, because Mandarin and Arabic are top demanded languages in the US military right now, they will also pay you extra income if you speak, write, and read in those languages fluently. It makes sense if you think about it: higher education always leads to more income in today's society. From my experience, JROTC doesn't really help much when you transition to ROTC. JROTC is limited since it's under school restrictions. ROTC is a lot different because they treat you as an adult and they expect you to live up to that standard. As Rachel have said in the video, the first two years (freshman and sophomore) do not require you to sign contract, so it's basically a freebie for you to explore and find out whether the military career is for you or not. When you get to your third year (junior year of college), they will ask you to sign contract stating that you have to serve 4 years after you graduate college. In exchange, they will provide you tuitions for all of your fees in college, as well as spending money and training in between the summer breaks. What they do during the summer break of your college is that they send you to boot-camp and prepare you for upcoming events. It's basically OCS. There are a lot of other options you can explore, depending on what route you want to take. They also offer paratroopers and for the army it's army ranger school and other things. It's really up to you to decide what route you want to take. But just now that those spots are limited. And if you want to get into one of those spots, then you have to prove to them that you are the best of the best. It's just the same as applying for a prestige university. They have a lot of applications, but they can only accept so many. My advice to you is do some research and talk to a local recruiter and they'll generally answer whichever questions you may have about the military career and how you should approach it. I have only had covered parts of the things I can remember at the top of my head, but there are a lot of other options out there. Just speak to a recruiter and you'll find out. Just know that ROTC is the best way to becoming an officer in the US military. The other way is Officer Candidate School (OCS), but that one is very hard to get in. You have to be super good as in United States Military Academy (West Point) good to get into that, granted that I haven't even talk about ethnicity in the military yet. Good luck to you, though, brother.

That's awesome I did not peg you as military. My "little" sister is in the air force now. Not in Japan though. Took like 100000 videos at her graduation. Super proud. Walking up to her after the ceremony stuff after not seeing her for awhile and with her in uniform and everything is something I doubt I'll ever forget. So far it seems she likes it. Very happy things worked out for you :). Personally I think the fact that you were willing to sign your life away in the first place is worth the thanks. Not what you did specifically. But I will refrain as I doubt I can fully understand, etc ...

Rachel thanks for making this video.I am an Air Force cadet in high school and I have always wanted to enlist in the military but didnt know what to do.I guess the only thing that bugged me is that im a total nerd. I love video games and anime but thought that in the military there would be like zero tolerance for that kind of stuff. I thought I was going to be deprived of video games and anime for 4 1/2 years. Japan has always fascinated me , so when you said the Air Force had 3 bases in Japan , that filled me with hope. Thank you for showing me that I can grow in the military while still enjoying the things I love. You have my heart felt respect and my thanks. Thank you

Matt Kurtz this is late af but for everyone else- there’s nerds everywhere. During my time in the Army it was less common to find someone who DIDN’T watch anime or play video games. They don’t care what you do with your personal time as long as it’s not illegal nor disruptive to others.

I am going to thank you for your service for one reason and one reason only, you said that most of your military career was done after the injured your heart with the smallpox vaccine. That means that technically you could have applied for medical discharge, and probably would’ve won. The fact that you stuck it out for the remainder of your time even though there were as you said aspects that you absolutely hated, is extremely brave to me. Don’t ever let anyone tell you differently! Congratulations on finally making it to Japan!

I was a DEO (direct entry officer) in the Canadian army for two years. I stayed in Canada for the full two years. I was originally recruited to get a polo team started but that never got off the ground so I became a tank officer. I never signed a contract or got my university paid for so I had no time obligations with the army and when I went to my CO and explained that I wasn't happy in the military, my CO tried to talk me out of it, saying that, as I was 27, if I wanted to reenlist as an officer, I would be past the age limit. I was released with an honourable discharge, wrote and passed my Foreign service officer exams and was interviewed for a diplomatic posting. Unfortunately, languages are my Achilles' heel, so I wasn't offered a posting. I still managed to live and work in 16 countries and wound up financially stable. It has been a rich life experientially, so I am happy. Having been diagnosed with stage 3 blood cancer 5 years ago, I can relate to what you say about anxiety attacks. I had some serious ones until i was prescribed anti depressant medication. Now things are fine. Your two orange cats remind me of one of my childhood cats and Poki reminds me of a Siamese cat we had when I was a boy. Domo arigato.

You volunteered to serve your country and with that, you laid your life on the line. Like me you never saw combat. Like me you have a service connected disability. Like me there were many things that you disliked about some of your service I had some life changing (NOT for the better) personal experiences resulting in severe depression as well. I now ride a wheelchair as an eventual of the damage to my knees and, me being a big strong idiot, continuing to lift heavy things because I could (at the time) and damaging my spine in the long run. Would I do it all again? To become the man I am now and to be with the woman I have been married to for the last 34 years in the end? YES! In a heartbeat. While I'm not a "fan boy," I got hooked on anime watching Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network and that led to an interest in the Real Japanese culture which led me to your videos. Keep up the good work! I know I will never get over there but your videos have answered SO many questions I have had!

I guess I am not that nosey since I never really wondered too much about the details. I assumed "Life is complicated" and that's all. Still, I am sure some of your fans curiosity has been satisfied once and for all. As for folks who might have issues with your military career, ignore them. I am a pacifist personally so I wouldn't have done the same as you but circumstances and life decisions are a subjective thing, and can't be treated as absolutes. Rachel - about the being thanked for service, I felt the same way (Army, and I too would urge anyone thinking of joining to GO AIR FORCE FOR GOODNESS SAKES!) It was uncomfortable because I didn't go to an active zone and so many more people have done far more, given their lives. However as I met more people like me that weren't exactly comfortable with the thanks given everywhere, I found an appropriate response: "I'm glad to have had the opportunity to serve." In reality, you gave time out of your life. You gave up the freedom to make your own daily choices FOR FOUR YEARS! You took on something many people would run from. It's not an easy life. You taught people as an instructor and they will do great things because of you. THAT is what people are thanking you for. That is something I can live with in thought when people thank me. I hated the service when I was in. I was physically ill almost everyday the last 6 months of my term. I couldn't wait to be done with it and put it behind me. However after getting out and starting a new chapter in my life I realized the military helped me grow as a person and kept me out of trouble during one of the worst periods of time for a guy in his youth... it's so easy to make a bad/stupid life changing decision or be influenced by a bad element. Now that it's long been over, I say I hated it while doing it (mostly because it was the Army branch) but I'm glad I did it when I was young.

I've played WoW for several years and a couple of my guilds were almost entirely air force. We even had one guild where one leader was army and the other was air force. The rivalry was hilarious. I grew up in an area near a major AFB so a lot of the people here were either military families or military themselves. I totally get the part about it being "just a job." The military is a HUGE employer and takes a lot of different kinds of people. I was spotted in high school, kinda like how you were, but in my case it was in a computer programming class. I was at the time a strong swimmer, spoke fluent Spanish and rudimentary Japanese and German, and had no particular other aspirations. I really seriously considered joining military for a while, it seemed to be a way for me to advance my education and maybe do something good for other people, plus the job security kinda can't be beat. But I also had severe asthma (ironically I seem to have grown out of it around the same time that my contract would have ended had I started then) and pretty much as soon as that came out people were suddenly... considerably less interested in convincing me to join. I wasn't outright turned away but the sense of being wanted and invested in was definitely gone. I was also figuring out at the time that I am not heterosexual. Having grown up in a town where homophobia pretty much didn't exist, or if it did it was not open, I wasn't particularly concerned about that... but knowing the military had certain policies in place (in around 2006) and that attitudes beyond policies were present or even rampant, the more I thought about the caveats the more I doubted that it was the right thing for me. I'm 25 now, and in hindsight I sometimes think that I maybe should have done it anyway, but life is what it is. I don't regret my decision, I only wonder about it sometimes.

Jtheman I'm not, I'm female, but it bothered me nonetheless. Things are getting better in terms of equality in the military but there's still a long way yet. I'm still young and while I'm enjoying my budding career elsewhere I still might consider military if the right kinds of reforms come about, and I don't mean just in terms of LGBT issues. I'm also an atheist and there are a lot of things I've heard of that go on in various parts of the military which blatantly violate the constitutional rights of its members, especially in terms of religious and political ideology. Again, getting better, but still not an environment I could conscionably put myself into.

Jtheman There's certain content in the oaths that are taken, among other things. Google might be your friend for this one since it's kinda a can of worms. I don't really wanna debate about it here and I'm absolutely not saying that military are bad people or anything like that, there's just some really archaic nonsense going on both in terms of actual policy and social issues.

Narcissus X If by archaic nonsense you mean belief in God and actual marriage then that's pretty offensive.

Thank you so much for your openess, this was so interesting to watch, especially your growth and passion! What an amazing adventure - shows how much can happen if you're brave and follow through especially during the parts that are hard!

I've always found you so adorable and just so cute, I never would have guessed that you were in the military. o.o Like, woah, that came as a surprise. I don't watch a lot of your stuff, I only ever stumble upon random videos, but I've never been disappointed with them and they always make me smile. I'm not subscribed yet, but this whole story was just so magical and adorable, that I'm just gonna subsribe, because all of this is awesome. :D So, yeah, you've earned a new subscriber. Keep doing what you're doing! ^^
