They probably did this because G4 was more focused on the show than the toys. So they didn’t wanna make a bunch of characters and try to cram them into the show. Of course, they could make toy only characters, but a child would probably be much less likely to buy the toy if the character didn’t appear in the show. I think that for the toy line it’s better to have of bunch of different characters, but I completely understand why Hasbro wanted to keep the G4 cast smaller.

I feel conflicted about it. I think having multiple characters in the toys makes the toy line a lot more fun and increases the sales. People aren't going to want to buy too many duplicates of the same characters, However when a toy line has many unique characters, the associated media has to accommodate putting these characters into the show, which turns those shows into cluttered messes with way too many characters and the writing takes a hit. See Monster High, Ever After High, and Rainbow High. That said, G4's merchandising was baffling. They would make merch for background characters like Lily Wishes and Minty. Characters who never appeared in the show or at most said a few lines. But Other characters who did have significant supporting roles didn't get any merch at all. I don't think we ever got merch of Discord outside of a funko figure. Nor of Thorax or Ember. We also didn't get one off characters like Vapor Trail and her boyfriend that I forget the name of. I don't think we got merch of Pinkie Pie's sisters. etc. It was weird.

as a fellow mlp collector...i feel the same. I grew up with g4, and loved the mane 6, but i loved the background characters too ! i fell out of it around s3-4 (probably when s5 released tho cause i watched a lot of re-runs) and was disappointed to never find any of the background ponies in stores. I have a few tho: Derpy, Lyra, Cherrilee, DJ Pon3, and the lilac and green one (Daisy i think ?). I feel like they started making the bg characters later in the series and even then, i struggled to find them. now i prefer g1 and g3 toy wise because of the diversity. beautiful collection by the way !!!

As someone who was into G4 as a child, I wouldn’t have bought the background characters/characters that weren’t in the show. I don’t know if it’s just me but when I like a character, I only want that character.

G-4 reminds me of Beast Wars Transformers from the 90s: The Beast Wars cartoon had a deep focus on just a few characters (due to CGI technical limitations of the time), and the cartoon _really_ benefited from that focus a few consistent characters. G-4 was the same way; the characters kept me coming back to the cartoon. That said, loads of Beast Wars toys weren't represented as characters in the show, and I think the toyline benefited from having a huge variety of characters. G-4 could've done the same thing, background ponies got quite a bit of focus from the fans, and Hasbro totally could've cashed in on that!

G4 focusses on the development of the characters we're introduced. Over the years the characters became more and more, they eventually had to add diff species and animals bc designing ponies was more like a waste of time. There's no point for them to create more ponies if they can't be used to teach us more abt friendship or the lesson they want us to learn

My story 💗 Don't worry, I have the same problem, but with giraffes, yes, I collect them everything I see a giraffe on, so... 😅 But I also collect animal things (of course, not toys intended for dogs or cats or other animals), for example, bed linen on which animals are cute or I also have a curtain (with giraffes I have both bed and curtain), I have pillows, bracelets, plushies, Fanarts, pens, books, workbooks, Metre ... I like variation. G4 really has the best cartoon (I am an original first gen pony fan 80's baby...and I can admit FiM had a better cartoon), but I feel the older toys had better variation. I did not collect G3.5 I didn't like them. I also have not collected G5. I haven't watched much of the cartoon, so am not attached to the characters, and I'm not a fan of the toys. They are too far removed from what I want out of an mlp toy.

The first episode of mlp that I watched, was the one where it was Spike’s birthday, and he found out that if it was his birthday, he gets things for free

Some of the variants like the goth main 6 and the sparkly rainbow are some of my favorite figurines but I do wish they made more characters. Especially since they had so many characters in the show, like it wouldn't have been hard to make them either. They all had normal designs but they never got made :(

my biggest collection with the g4 merch is I would always collect the small blind bag figures that you would find at like a dollar general or something. I have many waves of them, from the neon wave, crystal empire wave, and that one glitter wave. But as for my criticism on it, while although there are a lot more characters to choose from, they always reused the same mane 6 models which is what really got me. Like there used to be a rainbow dash model with fluttershy's colors and such, and fluttersly didn't get her own model until some of the later waves. Really sad that they didn't make a whole lot of models

So real i honestly wouldve loved it if they made more of the side characters specifically the stallions! We dont get enough stallions! Like maybe the wonder bolts or the cake family! Like while i love g4 ( as they are the most memorable and the generation i grew with, along with the fact they just look cooler imo ) i really do wish they had more variation in their main toy line!

I can see certain characters getting their own toys but unfortunately it never happened though it'd be nice to see Lego making an ideas set based on Twilights castle with not only the main six but most of Ponyville and almost every other reoccurring character like smolder, Ember, Thorax and Discord

I personally was fine with them using the same characters over and over again since the Mane 6 were the characters I enjoyed the most. Also is it just me or does it seem that G4 merch still seems to be made today? It's still pretty often that I find it in stores.

Personally I prefer more characters VS same as variants or constant reuse. I've got some G1 and some others. I'm an 80's kid.

I prefer when there less chatcher because I like to remember the names bc I just want to be able to remember the G1 character names so I don't have a problem reusing the name chatcher I my special interest is mlp 😅
