In this somewhat eclectic mashup of clips, I summarize my progress on the spring pole lathe. I'll also be releasing a video "tour" of my lathe in the future.

So, a spring-pole lathe is a blast, but it has a STEEP learning curve. Anyone out there thinking of making one? Remember I have a long video about how I made mine.

Pretty fantastic work, dude! 😮 I've never seen a lathe made like that! In the other hand, I've seen lots of lathes made with washing machine's motors. I even have one stored here exactly for that. 😂 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

I love the idea of a washing machine lathe! This one is from Roy Underhill's design, and it's got its advantages and downsides of course. But at this point, I've got it more or less dialed in for my. Thank, and take care, youself!

building such a spring pole lathe has been on my list of things to do for a long time. hopefully, when life returns to some form of normalcy, i'll get around to it...

It was a really enjoyable build! I like the one I built, but it is a high bar to get into pole lathe turning. I would say something more minimalistic could be a good option! Still, I love my lathe!

Very cool! Looks like you're getting a really good finish with that skew. I've just started learning turning on a different style of foot powered lathe, it's tricky but so much fun!

100% agree. A real challenge, but a joy. Also, I'm not very scared of a catch, but the few times I've ever used a powered lathe (in like 20+ years ago), it was terrifying!

Thank you! You should definitely try it. A TON of fun and worth the effort to learn.

I'm just guessing but I'm thinking it was the sharpness of the cheap set and not so much the tools... But if they were those carbide ones, you were right to toss them cheap or not. Their "scraping" always seems to destroy rather than CUT anything. 🤣🤣 Especially at the slow speeds of a pole lathe. James Wright seemed to have that problem.

Exactly. They just would NOT get really good and sharp much less hold an edge. I perhaps got a bad set, but I just didn’t want to keep making trips.

Just an FYI, but you are not supposed to be dragging the tool on the work on the return! You should be moving the tool away for the return and then bringing it forward to the work for the power stroke! By dragging it on the return you are dulling the tool and doing no cutting. I know it is something that will take time to get used to, but it is necessary if you want to learn to use it correctly and have any kind of edge longevity. Here is a video so you get the idea! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMyBdLqlx9LeoZc.html
