The fine wood and all that good work...for that picture?

Seeing what you do with files and a hacksaw is very impressive. I'd have needed the Bridgeport and lathe at my job to do this project LOL. Great work!

In my case, nothing out of the ordinary. They hold an edge well and aren’t too brittle. I have used them with a mallet on many occasions.

Absolutely love the fact that you use a home made treadle lathe! Regarding the greenwood stuff: If your wood has already dried you can just resoak it and it will become as soft or softer than green wood again. I don't know much about turning but I imagine it works better with greenwood as well?

Thanks for this; no jazzy music; no skipping the messy parts, admission of mistakes, foibles, other real-world events. The result is, you came through all of it with a great chair. I guess I could do this after-all. I bet the next chair you make will have a different seat material! like poplar, or pine! And you just might find a draw shave

Thanks! Honestly, yes you can! For me, it was more about determination than anything. I will say, just watch Curtis Buchanan’s videos and take your time!
@maceightyfive24775 ай бұрын
shouldn't the outer holes be offset to the outside of the layout marks? You used relatively small diameter pins, so the difference is likely negligible, but I've seen people make these with dowels, in which case the error would be big

A tip, when you have to cut or drill two pieces that have to be mirror pieces, use double sided tape to hold them together while going through those processes. That will guarantee accuracy. Doing them separately allows for error when doing it by hand.

I like the look of the marking guage. But, by embedding the pin or "blade" into the beam, you won't be able to resharpen it. Wire nails get dented very easily with out much force. I would by some high carbon steel or tool steel and make a blade from that. You can use old circular & tablesaw blades or the blade of an old rusted handsaw blade.
@TheHandToolery6 ай бұрын
Great suggestions! For sharpening, I use a small file to put a new point in it. If it gets too small, I use pliers to expose more of the nail. If that ever gets too small, I can use a new nail.

First thing I did when I bought mine was, removed all the handles and soaked the irons in acetone. It softened and lacquer and made it easy to wipe off. Took only a few minutes. Then oiled them

Why would you set the saw after sharpening which results in the saw set, which is made of metal, making contact with the newly sharpened teeth?
@jfsauer428 ай бұрын
When cutting end grain, drop your hand so that the handle is slightly lower than the tip of the saw. Then when you reach your mark, level the saw out. You will find your cuts are much smoother that way.

Don't worry about the light colored handle. The cherry will darken over time. Want to hasten the process? Put it on a sunny window sill, turn it over weekly, and in a couple months the handle will be much darker.
