I definitely took this video more literal. I grew up in a almost hoarder level house with grandparents. I became content with it because it was all I knew. Once I moved out my apartment is spotless and I can relate so much to that “going back” feeling when I see something messy

As a 49 year old psychologist who has survived most every type of trauma I view most compulsions and perfectionism as unresolved trauma
@chuckkoehler9526
@chuckkoehler9526 Жыл бұрын
Yes, from personal experience having a traumatized nervous system (living in a semi-flight, freeze, or fight state) from neglect, abuse, and trauma usually creates coping mechanisms to avoid feeling and numb feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, inadequacy, lack of control, futility, shame, etc that are often "triggered" easily in situations that engender those feelings and are dealt with through addictions, avoidance, compulsions, perfectionism, narcissism, clingy/avoidant attachments, pleasure-seeking, degrees, materialism, hoarding, power-seeking positions of authority, busyness, and supposedly even ADD/ADHD (acccording to Dr. Gabor Mate). I see a lot of this in the middle school I work at.

If you’re truly a professional, leaving commentary like this is wildly inappropriate because it implies you are making professional judgments about the person in the video, who is neither your patient nor are they providing enough background for you to make any sort of claim about their mental health history.

When you showed the desk and I could spot the dust, my OCD flipped. Then you wiped it down. Whew! Lol But really, this is beyond relatable. My story is more habits passed down by my grandmother… cleaning makes me feel like productive and in control of my own space. It gives me a confidence boost most days while serving as a de-stressor on other days. Cleaning is just a part of what I need to be at peace.

My late mother was an extremely clean person, and this was passed onto my four sisters and I. But she valued her family and social circle time and interaction more, and thankfully was never clinical about it. Personally, I have adopted the same 'balanced' traits. But one of my three sisters, unfortunately married a man who was brought up in a similar home as we had all been, but with the exception....that his father was from an era that believed that 'wives should be seen and not heard' and withdraw from public and social circles to clean and cook. Unfortunately my sisters husband rather than see the wrong in this, chose to adopt his father's 'handicapped-male pre war' mentality. (although ironically he is also a hoarder!) and rather internally very insecure. (so extremes can open a whole can of worms. I chose my mothers commonsense balance to cleanliness, as not to impose the former on my partner.

You are beautiful - I needed to see this today. My place is a mess, almost on a hoarder level, but in the very beginning stages. I'm alone and I'm telling myself I don't care anymore, but I do care. I think its a device to keep people from coming in or getting to know anyone. My problem is trash. I don't ever take out the trash. I don't like going outside. I have EVERYthing delivered. EVERYTHING! Prescriptions, clothes, groceries, EVERYthing. All my banking, online. All my bills, online. I seldom go outside. Wonder whats happening to me? I talk to no one, not even online. I do not know anyone. No one, not a soul. Its been like this seven years.

Wow! I understand about the dirt and order. I had to move out on my own because I couldn’t control everyone else’s clutter and the resulting dirt. It’s impossible to clean floors and flat surfaces when they’re covered with crap. So now I have my own place, which I keep up with daily. It’s far from perfect, and I’m working on cutting myself some slack when every single thing is not orderly, but, like life, it’s a work in progress. Walking through my front door is peaceful now, rather than stressful and depressing.

I know what you mean, when you speak about the whole parasite/moths bit. The order and cleanliness is nice; but I find myself needing to let things go a bit otherwise it all becomes too much and overwhelms. It seems to help, but it also means I have to dedicate a day to doing the routinely cleanup again otherwise it once again becomes too much and overwhelms. Kind of a theme in my life actually... You want your house on a hill. That's great. I do too. Mine just comes with things being a bit simpler in some ways, but with added tech and stuff to help keep it fun. For those who want a mental image of what I want; let me paint you a picture in words. You sit in a comfy chair in front of your computer station setup, slightly reclines, feet raised; covered in a long robe like coat and a blanket over your legs with some knitted slippers on. You are cozy, warm, and comfortable. You have your hot coffee and/or tea, or whatever drink you like, available on hand. You have some snacks nearby. There is little that could remove you from this position aside from the non-arguables of life. The room you sit in has a small fireplace with some silent fans moving the heat around. It's well built to reburn the smoke, thus reducing emissions and pollution in general to near zero. Whatever leaves the stove goes to a special system of pipes that effectively pulls the smoke through misty air to cause the smoke to liquify and drain into a canister instead for use in turning into a combustible fuel for a remote generator near the lake. Guilt free comfort as you like to say. Or close enough to it. You're using mostly waste water that is in the grey zone, not black water; and you're burning dead wood and quick growing wood stuffs instead of typical trees, except when dead fall or needing to be removed for other purposes. Plenty of that in your area, so no shortage of heat for the home. Besides, there is a geothermal pump keeping the place warm enough already for the whole year. The fireplace is more about the ambience and extra heat included as a nice package. Plus if the geothermal pump ever kicks out, you always have the wood heat to back up on. You raise your head to witness a big ol trout jump out of the water in the lake visible from the window. It reminds you the time is close to feeding time for the animals. So, you do raise from that position from time to time, to tend to the garden out back, feed the chickens, goats, sheep, pigs and a few milking cows loitering about with a few beef cattle in the field behind the garden. Each animal is in it's own area, with lite fencing keeping some away from the others for their own safety. Some get huge spaces, others get more refined spaces. To each their need and want, for the service of their products and proteins. This homestead is not huge, but not small by comparison either. It is nearby the mountains, and has all the fields, wetlands, woods, lakes, rivers, hills, valleys and streams nearby that a person could want. It's a big chunk of property, out in the wilds; away from it all. But the homestead itself is not huge. It can easily hide within the trees of said property. The house, while difficult in digging it in so close the mountains, is subterranean based, so it blends in easily. The barn is similar yet slightly larger in height for storage reasons and access reasons. The garage, shed, workshop, etc; all the same thing. Shrubbery, and greenery covering and surrounding the flat deck roofs keep it hidden better as well, provided it all stays 'wild' looking. If anything, the only indication there is anyone living there at all, is the gardens, greenhouses, and animals moving about the day. A veritable garden of Eden, almost, if not for all the technology laced in with it. And then others who want similar setups and lifestyle can setup their spots away from me but on the same property as neighbors. And over time this can grow to a point where we have enough people specialized in certain tasks, that a community can form. One that blends into nature as best as possible; while not forsaking the progresses we have made technologically either. But with some things put aside, for reasons to do with the end result desired. For instance, if you don't need to do mass agricultural methods involving fields, then you don't really need combines or threshers or tractors of many sorts. Might still want the tractor though. Useful tool that. My point here, is that some of us understand where you are coming from. It's not an OCD, so much as its a desire to have some order and control over some small aspect of your life. For you, it's all about cleanliness. For me, it's about self sufficiency first, whilst having some social activity as well later on. Wish you the best, and hope you can find the peace in order you are looking for.

It’s perfect for me at this moment because after eight years of having a drug addicted adult child living with me, she has finally left. I pray to God, I never take her back again. I can feel the peace this man has in his apartment. I could never feel that in mine for these last eight years. It is indescribable how horrible your surroundings in your own home can become with a demon possessed drug addict, always always dragging it down into a hell hole. I agree that living alone is key for regaining that level of serenity.

I am a lot like you...but I didn't come from a dirty or a hoarder house but I was always neat and tidy and organized. The problem was my sister whom I always had to share a room with was, well the opposite, and still is. But I don't have to live with her now so it is o k . Thank goodness!
