Two weeks ago I bought a small group of African butterfly cichlids. And I guess they like their new home, because the first pair just laid eggs already :)

Wow, didn't expect that. What an emotional rollercoaster. Loving your West African Butterfly Cichlids. I think they're a great feature fish choice for this tank. Thanks for the update.

Hi MJ, groetjes uit Limburg. Now thats a sign of a good aquarium, that they were comfortable enough to breed just after 2 weeks in a new environment. im sure that it was not a fluke and im also sure that they will soon attempt to breed again. maybe set them in another tank alone so that there are no predators to eat the eggs.

On the second 2nd time When she will move fry/eggs you should drop sinking food above her surface so it will go down near her fries so she will not move from her babies 🤗 This idea worked for me when my rams were breeding

Good for you MJ. Your tank has really come along! Beautiful. I have a couple of black mollys in a community tank. The female was huge.. she gave birth to a bunch of babies. The tank is heavily planted. Lots of good hiding areas. I can see about 5 babies left. They are about 6 mm long now. I’m surprised they have lasted this long. The other inhabitants I guess haven’t found their hiding place. The circle of life …

Long time viewer here. Awesome videos per usual. My tank is long and shallow and 170cm/5.6 feet long. HEAVILY planted and with endless amount of roots, branches and houseplants/ferns growing out of it with their fine and dense roots. A lot of cherry and amano shrimps in there. Too many to keep track of really. Do you think African Butterfly Cichlids would pick them off and put a dent into the shrimp population? I don't mind them eating some of the shrimp babies because there's a limit to how many shrimps one "needs" but.... Yeah. What do you and your viewers think?

I love to watch my fish spawning behavior. I don't know if it is true, but it makes me think my tanks are in good shape if the fish breed. I don't have any tanks set up for breeding, but I did recently get one baby corydora! The other fish go on an egg feeding frenzy, but I guess they missed one.

Beautiful tank! Sadly, there seems to be very little chance for fry to survive in a community tank. We have the same with our angle fish. One time, they made it really to free swimming fry, but when the parents moved around with them in the tank the first time, all babies were eaten in less than a minute😥

I bought them around 2-3 weeks (1 pair) almost same this setup(with neons) , with some xifo too..1.st observation, they was decimated my neoshrimps a lot. 2. i was seen some baby xifo in aquaruim, but i didnt see more i think they was eat them. 3. if i see good they started to search a place for the "nest". My goal was prevent xifo and shrimps to overgrow my tank, so seems very successfull, we ll see how the baby chilids ll keep up, i think they ll eat by neons and big xifos.. hopefully the balance ll be up. If i want any baby should put them separeted tank :)

I love the looks of that tank. The strange "bugs" are still around? I guess they're not doing any harm. 😀 I have a soft spot for key-hole cichlids. Long ago, I had a breeding pair, but the male jumped out of the tank through the tiniest of holes and "drowned" right next to the sump filter. 😢 It's easy to get attached to these very characterfull fish. Maybe someday, again...

I've seen this when the female leave the eggs, they have to to eat, and they become Macdonalds for something else, one trick I know about is to use a pipette or tweezers to feed her at the pit. It does work if you would like to keep your babies safe.

@merlost1624

0 TDS RO water?
@johnverhoef
@johnverhoef Жыл бұрын

To feed the nursing mother cichlid, mix some food and water in a separate container. Use a syringe and spray the food close to the nest so that the mother doesn't have to go far.. Almost at the same time, put the food in the opposite end of the tank for the other fish..

Don't feed them next time. Feed them a lot to condition them, then don't feed again for a few weeks. They will find things in the tank to eat. I haven't fed some of my fish for weeks at this point and they're doing great. In fact they're eating algae for me, even though they're not "algae eaters." Fish in the wild sometimes go months without the food they expect to find, so have the ability to eat microfauna and microflora we can't even see and still be great.
