Here is my collection of 5,600 CDs and Vinyl albums. I show you what the collection looks like and then I break down my collection by how many albums I have for each of my top 100 artists - for example I have 428 Rolling Stones albums (not including solo albums) and 10 Yardbirds albums. I hope you enjoy the tour of my record collection as of May 19, 2024.

Thanks for showing your huge collection Alan. Stunning!!!! Rolling Stones 428! That's quite a record. They are also my favorite band. In 1973, when I was 13 years old, my cousin made me listen to "Exile...." and from there I became a fan. But I love rock in all its styles: hard, prog, heavy, classic. I have a small, but well-selected collection of approximately 1,000 CDs. Congratulations. And from today I am a new follower! Luis, from Buenos Aires city, Argentina

Thanks Luis so much - that's awesome. Love your story. I was 13 as well when I bought my first Stones album. Awesome that your entry was Exile. Mine was Sticky Fingers thru my older sister. Our experience is so similar. 1,000 is a fantastic collection - in fact I need to purge some. Thanks again.

You've already shown us in previous videos just how well-versed you are about this band, how many things you know about them, how important they are in your life. You certainly gotta love 'em to have so many albums. Congratulations on your fantastic collection, and the sheer work required to keep track of it all, not to mention the hours upon hours of listening you put in to evaluate all this music. @@TheAlanRosenbergShow I'm however really impressed by the amount of artists you have collected 10, 20, 30, 100+ albums/releases for! It's rare for me to have 10+ albums by an artist. My approach is probably more "historical", I like to view albums in context. So, I have my albums sorted chronologically by year, starting somewhat arbitrarily in 1960. That means my Prince albums aren't all in one row but there's one in 1982, 1984, 1985 etc. I like to be able to look at one particular year and see what was interesting (to me). Compilations and box-sets and classical, jazz, pre-war blues etc. etc etc. I "have to" store separately of course! Collecting is fun but to keep it well organized can be a bit of a fun/luxury problem. I do like your system of first doing a quality control listening session before any release is allowed entry into the hallowed database!
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow 3 ай бұрын
@@OperationPhantom thanks so much again. That’s an interesting way to sort but that would drive me crazy lol. I definitely want to see how many albums I have for each artist, etc. The great thing about my database is that I could sort any way that I want. So I can search for each year each artist pretty much anything. In fact, I do a series at the beginning of every year where I look back in 10 year increments and choose my favorite albums of that particular Year. And that’s how I do that I saw it for each year and it shows me all the albums I bought that year and then I sort it per group within that year. Collecting and organizing, could be naughty for many people, but for us, it’s really fun. You could see your whole musical life within a sort. Thanks again
@OperationPhantom
@OperationPhantom 3 ай бұрын
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Yes, I can definitely see that partly chronological isn't to most people's taste because artist discographies get split up that way. I even do this chronology thing with live albums; which I shelve separately! Madness! Then again I'm not the biggest live album fan and only have about 150 of them (not counting jazz recordings)... Seriously though, I also do use a database (well, Excel sheet) to keep track of things and be able to organize by artist, album title, year of purchase, type of recording etc. Thanks again for the reply, I must try and find time to watch more of your videos!

Wanna say, that your show is a pleasure to me and that you know your followers, 'cause you said my name. - By the way, unfortunely I forgot a very important album by BURDON, called "mirage"/1970. It's Hardrock. It's 'bout the Vietnam war. Should be a big project by Eric, who wanted to make a movie & comic & album with that issue. But 'cause of some buisness problems, "only" the album came out. All songs by Eric, exept one, he wrote together with Jimi Hendrix! Eric and Jimi were friends and Eric was the first went to Jimis apartment/London, after Jimis girlfriend phoned him and said something wrong with Jimi, that she can't wake him up... Eric came for support & helped her to put all the drugs Intro tha toilet, just before the cops arrived. The nite before, Eric had a gig at Ronnie Scotts Club with WAR & Eric offers Jimi to come on stage for a jam. Couple of hours later Jimi died. - At last: I met ERIC, a very kindlly man, no "diva"-reactions... - Like always: kindly regards to you and your beloved. Praises Aaron

Aaron - that Eric Burdon story is fantastic and the fact that you actually met him and he was kind and not a diva - that's great. Not usually great to meet your "heroes" so they say. Your loss is truly undescribable. An immense tragedy that only people like you who went through it can understand. I've seen many of them through my firefighting but when it's your life, no I can't imagine. And whether its 5,000 albums or 100 - it's still a part of us gone forever. So again, my condolences - truly.

My official count of my collection of CD's, vinyl & cassettes has reached 1,000. I have almost everything i want so i don't see my collection growing too much in the future. I'll likely never pass 1,100 because most of the bands i collect have broken up, so no new releases coming from them. Also i haven't liked any new band since the early 2000's.

Sounds like a wonderful collection. Congratulations. With that said, seems like all major bands, continually release archive material. And as time goes on, at least for me, I'm consistently trying new artists and then the collection continues. But I agree, don't grow the collection unnecessarily - it can definitely get unwieldy.

My favorite bands, for example, are Status Quo (about 40 CDs), Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (80), Volbeat (all regular albums so far), Elvis Presley (over 40), Bellamy Brothers, Alan Jackson, AC/DC (what...), Metallica (...else), and many more. Ah, I almost forgot Visions Of Atlantis (symphonic metal from Austria, where I am from)! Their new album 'Pirates II-Armada' comes out on July 5th! Well, there's collections....and then there's Alan's Collection, or should we call it The Matterhorn? It's pretty overwhelming--how do you find time to listen to anything? I personally have found myself doing a 'bloodletting' of my collection a couple of years ago, but trust me, I was no where near Matterhorn status. That being said, I do have a significant amount of Rolling Stones material, principally on vinyl and CD. I rarely bought their 45s, because that was not format I ever found appealing, growing up in the great Album Era. But unlike other artists, the Stones are the one act I have never off loaded, the exception being a few bootlegs that I may have let go once the official versions became available, or they were very unappealing to me. One title I did sell off on eBay, because I was so angry at what was released, was the 40th Anniversary edition of Ya Yas. I have many versions of that album, and when they do a box set, they gave us nothing except a couple of songs that were on the Criterion edition of Gimme Shelter, and a CD worth of Ike and Tina, and whoever else were the opening acts--ridiculous. Seriously, that was a bigger waste than the almost embarrassing 50th Anniversary of Beggars Banquet--which gave us a flex disc with a radio interview...and a mono vinyl pressing of Sympathy???? When I was a kid, every time I would buy a Stones album, I would write down the title and date of purchase in a notepad that I carried for years, while I accumulated their catalog. I stopped noting titles when I was about 19. I really have no idea how many Stones titles I have, but it is a lot. I am pretty sure it is NOT 426, though. As for other artists, I have off loaded a lot in the last 5 to 10 years, particularly from the jazz side of my collection--and a lot of expensive box sets. You may recall my painful Bill Evans sell off that I mentioned before, and how I had to settle for so much less than what collectors seem to be paying for those sets. Another artist that got purged, almost savagely, was Led Zep. I was surprised when I dug into the shelves at the wealth of Zep bootleg material I had...I kept what I remembered as my favorites, or the best ones, and sold off the others--and I had pretty deep representation of nearly every tour they did, both soundboards and audience recordings. Something got in my crawl about them, so off they went. I did NOT buy the ballyhooed remasters that Page (once again) did in 2014-2015, with the exception of Presence and Vol 1, and those because the former has always been my most favorite of their studio albums, and the latter because they included the powerhouse Paris show from their second tour that was a famed FM radio boot for some time.

Always great to hear from you - and I remember well the Evan's conversation and various purges. I've slowed down my purchasing a bit lately, and this is the buying season with flea markets and yard / estate sales. Trying to get a bit into my backlog. But yea, nothing makes it into my database or the shelves until I've heard them many times (usually five or six times) for a new album. Comps, boxset and live albums not as many. Not everything I buy makes it - I do dump or sell off some stuff but never a big purge from "the bands I like". Like you did with Zeppelin. Not easy to do that. Funny that Presence is your favorite Zeppelin - now that's a contrarian point of view. I was thinking of doing a treasure or trash episode on Presence. Always interesting how we all have personal tastes and how individual albums effect us - oftentimes circumstances in our lives etc. Anyway thanks as always.
@anthonyaswe4174

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow You should do it! That is a 'trash v treasure' of Presence....actually that is a curious choice, since most people would go for any of their other 'landmark', or more celebrated releases. IMHO, In Through was the real dud of their studio albums. But the reasons I chose Presence are, well, more personal....I came to the album at a specific and special time in my life (much past it's release date, btw), and thus it's always puts me mentally in that frame of mind. And, quite honestly, I think the playing is exceptional, even though the overall songwriting is hardly great. I also love the sleepy, desperate, tired feel of the album, which captures where the band themselves were at that time, just before imploding from their own girth. I also liked the fact that, unlike all of their other albums, Presence had a very 'straight' feel and sound to it....I thought all of their other albums suffer from being too ornate, too detailed, sometimes too pretty--which was why I got so heavy into their bootlegs, which allowed you to hear the songs without all of the thick production that Page (apparently) pasted onto everything. I mean, I understand that a lot of those things were 'new' at their respective times...but as time has gone on, I find those effects very dated.

@@anthonyaswe4174 I so love your comments. You nailed how personal and special music can be to us - that time and space effect - Presence hit you at that perfect time in your life, so it means that much more. Thanks Alan…say, since we’ve dovetailed into LZ, what was your take on those Page remasters from about 10 years ago, in particular, the deluxe editions, that generally came with more snazzy packaging, and a disc of other material-be it live, or stuff in the can? I actually wasn’t that swayed by it, only duplicating the two titles I mentioned. Did I miss something? The expanded Coda peaked my interest-if only because it contained the most unknown stuff.
