Great video! Do you have a link to the lightweight V battery you are using. I’m also trying to figure out an overall budget to get me up and running with the Komodo. What do you think a ball park figure is (not including lenses) to get it rigged up and ready for action?
@SilfenPath
@SilfenPath 3 жыл бұрын
It’s called FXLion Nano One. But for some reason I can’t find it. Here’s the bigger brother of it Nano Two: www.amazon.com/Fxlion-V-Mount-V-Lock-Battery-Type-C/dp/B07WPKN2KM/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=fxlion+nano+one&qid=1608684048&sprefix=fx+lion+nano+&sr=8-3 As for minimal config - I’d say - memory card (512GB at least, $650), plus some either Timmy ribs or a cage ($50-250), plus some kind of a handle ($100-450). It really depends. But you’re looking at least at a $1000 extra as a minimum. Probably close to $1500 once you add batteries etc. Of course you can go much higher than that but again - really depends how minimal you want to go. Nothing wrong with going without anything or maybe with just one handle from RED and voila.

@@SilfenPath Do you think this is a good setup to travel in foreign countries? I want a red but have heard you need to rig it out like crazy, which is inconvenient for a traveling filmmaker like me.
@SilfenPath
@SilfenPath 3 жыл бұрын
Other REDs you do need to rig out much more and bey are quite heavy and chew threw batteries like it’s a competition. As you can see in Komodo’s case - you can go as light as just adding a handle of sorts, lens and battery. Yes, I’d say Komodo is great for travel if that’s the quality you need from your films. Also - if the workflow works for you as it does require some post processing to get the footage where you want it. Keep in mind that 512GB will only last you 30-40 minutes. A bit more in LQ mode. So you’ll need a good amount of storage with you to save it all. I would also highly recommend insuring your gear (if you aren’t already) and making sure it’s covered when traveling internationally. These things can get snatched out of your hand in LA, let alone in 3rd world countries ;)

does the 40mm stm lens make autofocus noise when recording video?
@SilfenPath
@SilfenPath 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a loud and slow autofocus lens. Depending on how close the mic is - you could pick up the sound. Don’t recall if internal mics can - will try to check soon, but that’s just scratch audio so it shouldn’t matter that much.

Hey, I just got the cable that you recommended for the Komodo to SDI monitor and this cable is very very small. Are you sure it gets from the monitor to the back of the Komodo?? It just looks extremely short
@SilfenPath
@SilfenPath 3 жыл бұрын
It’s what I have on mine right now but it depends on your setup. For my setup and OSEE 7” monitor which has SDIs towards the bottom it fits fine. But I route it to the left side of Komodo - which still provides plenty of clearance for CFAST door to operate, but I can’t go under it or over the top. In that case it’ll be too short.

Looking at its pics it should reach. But in the worst case - you may need to get the 50cm they have as. Smaller one works for me though. I hate having to loop cables around so a decently straight shit not blocking vitals (like media door) is my preference.

@ndavies8
@ndavies8 3 жыл бұрын
@@SilfenPath That's fair. If it was $2000 cheaper I probably would have gotten it. I think Quite a number of things could have been done different. At that price, I think they could and should have included a mini-xlr, a screen that flips, uncropped slo-motion (120p is basically unusable), internal ND, another CFast card slot and anarmorphic option at least
@SilfenPath
@SilfenPath 3 жыл бұрын
I see your point and I wish that was the case too as for me this is an A cam as well. The reasons it doesn’t have all this are these, as I see them; 1) it’s price point in current state cannot be lower because they aren’t Canon or Sony. RED does not make cameras at that volume to be able to benefit from cost savings that brings. 2) this camera is not advertised as a consumer camera but as a cine camera for big productions with big budgets whose crash cages for cine cameras cost more than Komodo itself. This is a crash cam and maybe a B-cam especially on set with other REDs. 3) as a crash cam it does not need audio. Most movie sets have pro audio being recorded separately. 4) it’s built to be like a little tank so flippy screen (as much as I’d welcome one) would probably be first to break and would make it feel much less tough. 5) variable ND would be really awesome, but it would complicate internals, make it bigger, and introduce another point of failure on set. This camera has the smallest amount of “moving parts” it can. Also, since it had an RF mount - it’s easy to add things like Kipper Tie Revolva and introduce NDs behind the lens which feel as if they were “in the body” 6) anamorphic is 100% coming. It’s just a firmware update and they said it’s on its way. I agree with second CFast slot. Especially if this is a crash cam it would be nice to have a backup :) And I would also like better slow motion myself at 120p without the crop, however, all RED cameras shoot with crop in lower resolutions. Not an excuse - but that’s how they approached this since they one in order to get true RAW - and not do any pixel binning, down sampling and what not. But Komodo should’ve had a bit faster processor/asic to handle shooting 6k at 60fps. That would’ve been absolutely awesome since it would probably mean 4K at at least 80-100 if not full 120. Anyways - thanks for your comment. Appreciate it very much :)
