The full details of Joe’s bike:
So the bike..
As the story goes, when BSA closed the armoury road factory and went into administration (Summer 1973) . All the assets were liquidated, a number of motorcycle/spares dealers were invited to the factory where everything was brown tagged a literal pick what you want and pay at the gate affair. To that end, one of those buying old BSA factory stock was 'Vale Onslows' a renowned Birmingham motorcycle and spares shop (local to the factory). Some 5-6 years passed by and in Summer of 1977 my dad, whilst making a regular visit, spotted the handle bars of this BSA 250 amongst many other items of hidden treasure. He promptly purchased this "motorcycle" for £300, it was unregistered, unfinished and had literally been taken off the assembly line part finished. Onslow's furnished with a number of items to get it into a fairly complete state with the follow; Bonneville T140 headlight, John Tickle headlamp brackets, Triumph Adventurer TR5T seat, Triumph TR5T/Bonneville left hand switch gear and a pair of Doherty Universal Grips.
This length of detail is crucial to the point of the upcoming request....
It was then built out (250 engine sold on) from the ground up with the CCM 550cc proforma engine but standard BSA B50 gearbox internals (4speed). He then rode it for around 18months at a guess/1200 miles. It then suffered a bigend failure and was subsequently rebuilt again following the engine repair. This rebuild was with the intention of sale due to lack of funds and my dad decided it would have more appeal in a 'Classic' BSA colour scheme of red and black.
He dropped lucky on finding a pre-finished triumph Aluminium Tank in Red and polished complete with a Monza cap. Had the frame enamelled black (see photograph) and this is how it was sold circa 1979/1980...
It was sold to Birmingham Motorcycles, Where did it end up???
Key point to note given its registration after my Dad built it means it would be the only or one of very view Late OIF BSA/Triumphs registered in 1978 it will either be a very late S or an early T registration.
** ***S or ** ***T (reg unknown)...
More info...
It was sold to Birmingham Motorcycles at their short lived second premises, a re-purposes petrol station on Walkers Heath Road, Birmingham. Now demolished and the site of domestic housing.

Freddie thats a very rare 316 BMW from the 1970's 1600cc ... 3 series they only made it 2 door back then as my mum had an orange 1977 316 as that model only came with single lights and I remember that you only got a drivers side mirror as standard. crazy as now all cars fitted with to mirrors standard ... great video

Correct, regarding the 316. But [with my anorak hood in place] I had a 318 [Carb] model with single headlights and remember it also came with the 318i. My memory thinks the 6 cyl cars - 320/323 came with dual headlights. Freddie, as a youngster, you are of course forgiven - keep those old 4 wheel Cameos coming.

The 4cyl engine that was in most upgrade models was rubbish with a chocolate camshaft

I like the look of the gear you have more than mine, but worry about lack of impact armour. Boots holding the ankle from breaking. Knee, shoulder elbow, hard armour etc. If ever we have the unthinkable accident, would you like to lie there and think "well I did all I could with protection the rest is fate" OR " If only I was wearing more protection I might have come off better." You only have one body for your whole life. Only thoughts, we worry because we like you. I say we, my wife follows you too. Keep up the enthusiasm. Keep up the videos, fantastic!

I myself am just getting back to basics biking after a stint chasing the dream in the adventure bike world, which quickly became a rat race to make sure i had all the ''necessary'' kit the media will make you believe you need to have to enjoy any trip out on the bike! The under armor lets me wear whatever I want, it is perfect. During summer you can just throw over a pair of linen pants because lets be real: normal fabric doesnt protect you anyways. Just a note about Stylmartin quality from my personal experience. I have had my Rocket boots for 8 years now, used them everywhere with high and low temperatures, sun or rain. When I moved to Sweden they became my daily walking boots for the winter, until I got a job with motorcycles and started riding again. The boots are still here covering double duty, still being used for walking and riding. Considering that they cannot be resoled, I am pretty amazed. I had them repaired once because one stitching gave up on top of the boots.

Thanks, Freddy, another enjoyable video. I had a 1978 BMW 320i (US version) in the same body style of that lime green car you showed. Your channel is unlike any other KZfaq motorcycle out there in the best way. Subscribed, liked and waiting for the next video. Your pants, jacket, and gloves are ultra-lightweight, imo. I wear a Klim suit with Level 2 armor in the knees, hips, elbows, and shoulders over a Klim airbag vest. But you do you and I hope you, me, or anyone else never has to test their gear on pavement.

The BMW at the start of the video was a first generation E21 3 Series. The "R" numberplate would date its registration to the period from August 1977 to July 1978. The 3 Series was introduced in 1975 as a replacement for the 02 Series, i.e., 1602 and 2002, their previous compact saloon. The two single headlights would indicate a smaller engined version such as the 316 or 318, as the 320 had four headlights. Also, this original 3 Series only came as a two-door saloon. Four-door and estate versions would only be introduced with its replacement, the second generation E30 3 Series in 1982. PS: You're correct about the 5 series; it has never been available as a two-door. The contemporary 5 Series to the car in this video, the first generation E12 (1972-1980), was available in the same sickly green colour but only came as a four-door saloon, ditto the second generation E28 (1981-1987). The closest thing to a two-door 5 Series was the original E24 6 Series coupe (1976-1989), which was built on the same platform.

Nice jackets. I have a 40 year-old Belstaff,which I still wear. I was going to sell it, but when I saw the cost of a new one, I decided to keep it! Now I know you're renowned for your "relaxed" attitude to machine maintenance but don't forget that you also have to "service" your waxed cotton jackets. It's important to clean and reproof them regularly, otherwise they can lose their waterproofing and dust can become trapped in the coating causing wear to the material and stitching (particularly important after your many sandy miles through Morocco, I think).

Back in the day everyone wore belstaff trialmaster wax cotton.l never liked them myself always felt slimy. My old set from the late 70's was thrown away by my ex while l was away.. However l do have a lovely pair of gloves generously given to me a year or so ago.

I had a belstaff once and great jacket but now very expensive so I just bought the Oxford Hardy wax cotton jacket in olive and it's so great. Also never thought Freddie would get rid of that white full face that has the visor that has elastic (like googles) I thought that was his favourite and also a cool looking lid 😎

I recently picked up the Course Touring Gloves from your recommendation on a previous video. I've worn them for 1 ride and I cannot make my mind up if they kept my hands warm enough that it wasn't a bit of an issue. Further testing required...

that BMW is an E21 3 series early car and they only came out as a 2 door, could be had with 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 cc engines, that one is a 1.6 or a 1.8 with the single headlights as the 2.0 and later 2.3 had quad lights, and as for the bank, they have to by law offer you at least a basic account

O.I.F?. I guess you wouldn't know but it means "Oil In Frame". The bikes that BSA / Triumph built in the early '70s had the oil tanks built into the frame down tubes.

Just remember that unlike helmets, there is no real safety marking for any clothing. It does not guarantee to work at the point of collision. That does not mean one should not wear protective clothing however, there are no guarantees in this space

I’ve got a pair of those Ride & Sons boots and while they’re fine for what They are I don’t think I’d buy them again. Sole is quite possibly the most slippery ones I’ve ever experienced which can be quite scary in the rain at the lights. Also, the Velcro by the zip is already giving up and I’ve only used them for a few months. In regards to jackets, if you fancy the Belstaff I’d have a look at the Gold Top offering. For the same price you get great leather in AAA with good armour. Sadly I find the current reincarnation of Belstaff to be more fashion than substance.

Yes. Back in the day ('79) we bought a Belstaff partly because they were cheaper than a leather. Returning to biking after a gap, I was looking for another one but nothing prepared me for the new prices! Luckily I discovered Merlin for my main (armoured, heavy) bike jacket, and Speedwear for a robust trail master look alike (less than £100). Unfortunately Belstaff have priced themselves out of my scope. Barbours used to be posh, but they are half the price of the belstaff.

I've recently discovered Goldtop gloves. I'm so impressed with the leather and quality, one of their leathers will be on the shopping list when i need a new one. Also like you in not impressed with having to work out which Belstaff is a motorcycle jacket or a fashion jacket, they used to be nice heavy almost canvas material.
@903lew
@903lew Ай бұрын
@@DirkGentley42 I mean, old Belstaff went bust so I can’t really blame them for changing their business model. From what I can see they’re doing quite well really and that’s a good thing all things considered. But for protective gear I’m far too timid to ride in just A-rated (or indeed level 1) gear. With modern materials I don’t really understand why you’d by anything less than AA as they’re neither that heavy nor cumbersome these days. But like you said, there’s Merlin, there’s Gold Top, there’s about a million brands out there that work great for a more reasonable price.

Freddie, I know that you try to combine style and protection into your riding gear and I dig this style myself also but I cannot fathom how can anybody spend 4-5-600+ pounds from their neck under and at the same time keep those crappy helmets. That being said, please please please for the love of god invest in some premium fullface helmets such as Arai, Shoei or even better go extra classy with a Qwart (anything ece 22.05-22.06). Just a first responder's opinion who has seen one too many brains on the asphalt...

Hi Freddie, if you're looking to visit Dharamshala or somewhere about Himachal Pradesh, I can mention a few spots here and there that you might want to look into. And if you're planning to visit North India in general, pack something for winters because it can be a little chilly (probably pleasant by British standards, so I don't really know).
