As a thank you to all of the tool trailer contractors out there who have posted tours and deep dives (from Ron Paulk to all the others) - here is my 6x10 V-nose modified SMART trailer deep dive into how I organize.
This is the last part. Since I have no video editing skills currently, I ended up with three parts to get it all in. Thanks for hanging with me! The tour concludes with the last drawer bank to final thank you!
And.........Keep a look out for a video I shot for my son which was my first tour and shallow dive into my trailer, version 1.0 before it was completed and then later partially reworked into this version (1.5). It is a nice comparison of where I started and how stark it was on its first outing to a 2 month long job and how much it has changed since summer of 2019 to now!
I hope you enjoy!
Here are some links to trailer tours and deep dives as a way to say thanks for all the trailer videos out there! Keep building. Keep Safe!

Thanks for checking out the whole deep dive! You are a brave soul. Sorry for all the talking and lackluster videos …. my only defense is that they were some of my very first videos and had no video editing capability other than my phone’s video pause button. I have an updated series gathered into a playlist on my channel called “deep dive a-la-carte” and they are much shorted videos that focus on only one part of the trailer at a time. Very sorry to hear you lost your dad as well. Too young.

Watched all three vids in this series… thanks for all the info. I’m going back into full time contracting from 20 years of facility maintenance and I need a bit more than what I was doing in my van. We will be building and remodeling so our location will not change as often so this looks like a perfect set up for us.

Thanks for checking out the videos. They were some of my first and except for the pause button, I had no editing ability. You are brave and should be commended! Best of luck with the career change. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I would certainly recommend Ron Paulk who is the guy who inspired me and got plans from for $20 or so. I could not have been so successful with my build out without his plans. I personally would go 7x12 or 7x14 tandem axle if I could do it again. I love the small trailer 6x10, for ease of getting it on job sites but is restrictive for materials hauling (I.e. plumbing parts, elec parts, some lumber and trim….) again, best of luck!!

Love your build out. It’s a great hybrid of Ron and your designs. I have a 6’x12’ and the same two dewalt miter and table saws. Two questions, did you consider making the aisle a little wider and what stopped you? The other question is did you consider making the tool cubby’s a little more shallow and what made you land on that depth? I’m doing my build out now and struggling with my claustrophobia and getting the big tools and ladders in and out as I always need a workbench outside the trailer and I am constantly on short ladders touching up stuff that’s just slightly out of reach. Great job on the video too, it’s so relatable to real life.

Hi Paul. Thanks for checking out the video. You have some great questions. I did blend most of Ron's ideas with my own necessary modifications driven solely by the narrow trailer and need for the end-vertical tool garage. 1) I would love a wider isle but both the left cabinet bank set and the right side large tool garage depth drove the isle width. The tool garage depth was essential for the big two. The drawer banks I wanted the 23 7/8" depth for tools and the counter. So..... the isle suffered. 2) The tool cubby depth....of the two that I have, I never considered modifications since I have never used them nor knew what all I would eventually buy and put in them. Fortunately, almost all my tools fit in the cubbies except for the large 60V joist drill. I do have many tools double stacked in cubbies now since I am at Max on tools. If the cubbies were any shallower (either one), I would now be having a ton of trouble with tool storage. (again, having to double stack many of them ... a shallower depth would not allow me to double stack). 3) I get the claustrophobia. It is tight. I have a lot of trouble navigating my trailer isle when I have a tool belt on. 4) I put my bench in the isle when needed (or tile tools or miter stand wings or ..... ) and pull the isle stuff out when I get to the job site. I don't have any way around it unless I use my truck bed for the bench or other extras). 5) My next trailer will be most likely be an 8x12 with as much height as I can get (min 7ft). This will solve the isle issue with the extra 2ft of width. The extra 2ft of length will be welcome too. BEST OF LUCK with your build out. If you post any video or photos, please let me know. I love that kind of stuff!

Awesome trailer and organization! You mentioned living in upstate NY and your father working at Corning. I live in the Corning/Horseheads area myself. I’ve been thinking about doing a trailer for tool organization too. I have a cpl rental properties and am always finding myself driving back home because I forgot something.

Howdy fellow local! My dad was a mill-right at Corning Glass and worked a ton of hours. As for trailers, It is hard for me to overstate the usefulness of this design for my trailer and how it has really delivered for having those random "need just two" whatevers that keep me from breaking camp and running to the store. It real nice to not forget a tool. I am very appreciative of that! Best of luck if you build out a trailer. For me it was time well spent and I hope to sell this one in the spring and get a larger trailer and build it out as a combined SMART-ART Ron Paulk trailer. And.....best of luck with the rental properties! Thanks for checking out the video and for your comment.

If you don’t have anyone in line to buy this current trailer please let me know in the spring if you do decide to sell I would definitely be very interested. As rewarding and fun as I’m sure it would be to do my own build I wouldn’t mind buying one already done haha.

If you ever saw the video of the guy who bought Ron Paulk’s ART trailer, I know what you mean. I am envious of that guy. It would be cool to buy one prebuilt so if I have no local takers, I will reach out to you! Take care and have a great new year.

Thank for commenting! As much as I would like to take credit for this and sell you some plans….I extend all credit to Ron Paulk for the design! I would point you to his website: The Smart Woodshop where you can find his inexpensive plans for his 8 x 12 trailer for sale and instant PDF download. I purchased his SMART tool trailer plans in 2019 and found them easy to follow and especially easy to modify from his 8 x 12 down to my 6 x 10 trailer. My left side trailer is almost a match to his but modified to fit in mine. The right side of my trailer is much more custom due to the large tool garage and my narrow isle. Best of luck with your build out! thesmartwoodshop.com/

Appreciate y'all. Great trailer layout. But what about weight on the single axle? Thanks
@sdsconstruction
@sdsconstruction Жыл бұрын
During this video.....3500 max, trailer with tools in my current configuration is around 3000lb. While the next trailer plans to be double axle from 7000 to 10500lb max. HOWEVER --- last summer I swapped out the 3500lb axle for a 5000lb single axle on this current trailer. I discovered I was over the 3500lb max and so swapping the axle made good safe sense! Thanks for the comment and question

Excellent three part series. Planning on a 7x14 and setting up like yours. One thing I am looking into and curious what you think about is security. Almost every tool would be stored in the trailer and I worry someone breaking into it or worst case hooking up and taking the whole thing. Do you use a coupler lock or tire lock? What are your thoughts?
@sdsconstruction
@sdsconstruction 3 жыл бұрын
I have coupler lock, GPS tracker and warning system if it moves without me or gets opened up by someone else. No tire lock yet but have thought about it! Thanks for the comment and good luck with your build. If you put up a video, please let me know!

@sdsconstruction
@sdsconstruction 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. With this trailer, I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I did rebuild the right side/table saw side a few months into having the trailer so I had the chance to rework some things into a better configuration. Maybe ladder racks and battery power? With the next trailer, I am looking for a 7x12 or 7x14 and will likely try to combine Ron Paulk's left side SMART trailer (very much like what I have now on the left side but bigger/longer) and more of his older ART trailer on the right side which is how Renovations and Repairs youtube channel (Richard's trailer) is set up. It looks to me like the best of both worlds. If I had room for solar power and/or marine deep cycle battery power in addition to the plug-in shore power, I would to that with this trailer if I could. I would also like some "deep storage" of bulk stuff and I would like to have more plumbing and electrical parts that I just don't have the room for in this trailer.

How can I hire you to build one?
@sdsconstruction
@sdsconstruction 2 жыл бұрын
Wish you could! I liked building mine enough to do it for someone else but wow.....it is very labor-heavy to construct and at $50-$75 an hour.....it would not be cost effective to hire this type of build out given the number of hours in the build. I would encourage you to build your own as a big money saver. There is once builder (I saw the video) who made his with some basic Ryobi tools and used nothing as fancy as a router even. His trailer came out very well! So it can be done with basic tools and Ron has an amazing set of videos on both his ART and SMART trailer construction. That is what I watched many times before my build. Now, this all being said....if you are loaded with extra funds.....I would be happy to help you out!!!! Best of luck with your build.
