I use "Exceed Pocket Ruled Journal, Black, 96 Sheets, 78 GSM" from Walmart ($5.47) in the cargo pocket or breast pocket. It appears about the same size that you shown. No bleeding or ghosting even with my wettest pens. They have A5 is well.

I often have my backpack with me (a fantastic purchase for $5 from a second-hand store!) and I take a book along with me. I remember how in Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" the author mentioned a lady she knew when growing up and the lady always carried a book with her. It's been a long time since I read the collection of letter "Anne Sexton - A Self-Portrait in Letters" but my recollection is that Ms. Sexton once told her daughter in a letter that a book is always your best friend and to take one with you.

The bottegaobscura has great paper. Holds up to fountain ink well and has a vintage look and texture.

For a knife, I have been carrying a Victorinox Tinker for 35 years, it is the stopgap between a multitool and a single blade and also does not look so aggressively "tacticool."

I also wear progression glasses, but I made my optrician meassure the low distance part just to my specifications concerning writing and reading. Not all that practical for the outside world but it spares me the second pair and the constant swapping.

Both pairs of glasses look good on you....Ray Bans are always in style! Blue is a nice change of pace....

Hello HJ. It is interesting to see the different EDC that people keep with them. Some items are similar while others are tailored to the individual. Interesting to see your setup. At the moment I find myself swapping bags a lot. When I go to work by bike I use waterproof panniers from Vaude. When I go by public transport I use a Levi's Icon tote bag or a backpack. In order to easily swap bags I use a Lihit labs Bag in Bag, which is absolutely brilliant. It holds my most important stuff and it can easily move it to another bag without accidentally leave something in the other bag.

This is one I thoroughly enjoyed. Your bag did not have the usual flashlights, firestarter kits, cordage, fatwood, folding saw, first aid materials, etc. that I am accustomed to seeing when one mentions EDC. Your contents certainly match your life.

Love the bag! I use a smaller Saddleback case as well as a green Filson brief. I always carry a pair of portable binos from Leica and a smaller Sibley guide to birds. Journal--obviously. And a pencase with MB's. Also a Blackwing pencil.

I usually also carry a camera and umbrella and laptop so I try to use thinner journals.

Knife...Don't you ever go through metal detectors? The Dayton Fed building guard stopped me at X-ray in around 1987. They told me not to touch my bag and pointed at the screen. 'What is that?' For the life of me I couldn't figure it out either. So I started listing what I could remember. '… A billfold?… A notebook?… Programmable calculator?…' Guard laughed and looked relieved. Then let me through. I never carry books or notebooks anymore, nor a laptop. I do everything on my giant iPhone. Including signing documents. Love my Liliputs. But I carry a pink and blue shiny Shark. No big loss for me but I would be sad if I couldn't replace it with the same color! Love the bag! I used to carry a leather satchel in black. But I found myself stuffing it too much so now I carry a really cool canvas tote bag made by people with cognitive disabilities. They paint patterns on canvas, then volunteers sew the bags up complete with magnetic closures and zippers, mine is bright yellow with a black bottom. It is super tough! The only problem is that everything in it turns yellow! Between us we both carry almost everything you do. One difference is we both carry a tactical pen light. I need to look into those nail clippers, mine is just a cheap pair. I picked up zeiss lens wipes at Cabelas for a scope. I've only used them to clean it once, they are fantastic for my glasses though!

Walking through my city Seville, in Spain, today I saw a new store selling rare books, old editions and second-hand. Of course I went in. And of the several books I acquired, this is one that I know you like. The Secret, by Donna Tartt. When I saw it, I remembered you, I knew about this book thanks to your Dark Academia videos.

Handsome briefcase! I'm trying to reduce the junk I carry in my pockets and have tried to get in the habit of always carrying at least a small messenger bag. So far, I end up running most of my errands with my pockets stuffed. I could definitely benefit from a little more organization.

"Sometimes I forget a fountain pen." But you still have one, with the Lilliput. Just that "just in case I forget." As I'm not that mobile anymore, I've pared down what goes with me. For years, I've carried an Xcelite electrician''s 2 blade I'd gotten from my dad in the late 1980s. Don't need an electrician's knife, but it's just a basic one with a screwdriver end to the second blade, which can come in handy. Grew up on a farm, so it's all about practical. 😉 Currently I always have 3 pens on me. Because I'm obsessed with vintage Esterbrook, there's a black 1948-52 J with a 2550 "posting" nib. Not a tipped one, the 1 & 2xxx nibs had rolled tips, or even nothing, but this is the smoothest extra fine I've ever used. Ink is Waterman Mysterious Blue, and it's perfect for those forms and such on cheap copy paper with small spaces to write. Second is another Esterbrook J, this one in gray, with a 2668 firm medium. Nib is very worn, so its almost an italic, but still a smooth writer. Ink in it is Waterman Serenity Blue. Again, for cheap copy paper, but whatever I need it for as well. And for permanent, an early 1970s Platinum pocket pen with Platinum Carbon Black. I'm not usually a fan of blue inks, especially "schoolboy washable blue," and Serenity Blue is kinda in that category, but it's not the same shade as most washable blue inks. Inks were gotten because I regularly have to fill out another form for the plethora of doctors I currently see. Plus I'm apartment hunting, so filling out applications. And blue inks are kind of the traditional go to for original copies. 😁 Don't carry much else regularly, but there's several notebooks next to me at home, and same with anything else I tend to need. Going out to just go out? Might take a book, maybe a notebook for remembering things, maybe even the "fixins" to write a letter. And usually a coffee. 😂 It's interesting what people carry daily. Some things are similar, some not as much. Interesting video!

When I go into work -- I have a carhart backpack. I searched long and hard for it. I needed something that was durable and can withstand well, me. Since, COVID, we were back and forth out of the office and our office was under construction most of the time, our office was out of our bag. So laptop and other accessories. Soooo, everything that I needed had to be secure and it's own pouch. Even a keyboard, I like a full size, because I do work with numbers. I don't need a fancy one, so it's straight up black canvas back, but I need it durable with lots of pockets. I have everything I need to set up an office space even a battery for my phone... Just in case. I even have my rickshaw cases for my fountain pens. Great Video HJ

This bag is superb. I don't dare carry my precious journals in the bag I take to work. Personally I have one for work (a French Hexagona that looks similar) and another (Arthur and Aston) exclusively for writing and poetry. I often use the second while watching your inspiring videos from the comfort of my sofa next to the fireplace.

I also wanted to ask where you found those nice leather boots in the journaling clip on the rock. I have been looking for a low drop full leather lace up boot like you are wearing there for quite some time. You have excellent taste and have chosen well with the reliable items that you carry.

I have a small chess puzzle (substitute your favorite puzzle type) book in mine. When I have nothing else to journal, it can entertain me in waiting room type situations.

We are probably within one or two years of age... I have a small AA size flashlight. I used to have a nice Olight one but after it got lost, I got one at Home Depot and change the battery twice a year whether it needs it or not so it is always ready, It has saved my bacon more than once.

I have a small sandwich sized leather bag that I keep my "small escaping stuff" in. Dumped on my desk I see: Altiod sized first aid tin with added antihistamines, antacids, and NSAIDS (the little ones from a convenience store, audited semi yearly for expiration date), Two Pilot Cartridges (if you get the Majohn A1 spares they come with a stopper and are compatible with the Pilots), Tazo Zen and Earl Grey tea bags, mini vials of Systane Ultra PF eye drops, USB data blockers, six inch USB C cable. I have a repeating calendar event to audit to add anything and remove anything that lacks intent.

My bag has a lot of the same things in it except for the lens wipes. Alcohol lens wipes can ruin the coating on many of today's eyeglasses and watch crystals, a micro fiber cloth is best.

I always keep a penlight and a special mobile phone that has a priority number that will remain active if all the networks are down as happened city wide in London when the 7-7 bombings on the Underground took place.

Glasses cleaner towelettes irritate my eyes, it even says on the package “may cause eye irritation” I would be very careful with those or just avoid and use water to clean your glasses.
