@John Smith She wants to raise the children they brought into the world. She wants the house. Dave thinks it's possible due to her husband's ability to earn a great deal of income as he's done over the years .... perhaps even 50,000..... not to be put into a 401K at this time in their lives with the young children.... You need to listen to what Dave is saying. Dad's not making a low income job. He's wanting to fund a 401K ... He's making good money and makes bonuses and increases his income by 30,000 a year at times... Leaving your children to go serve an employer.... Day care was originally intended to help the lower income families to make it work... now day care costs are so high.... children need their parents unless of course the parent is not diligent at parenting... those are the ones that want to go back to work and leave the children when the income is high.

@Sir We Are About to Die Well what I'm getting at (and why I think Dave said he needs to kind of take a chill pill) is because he's on route to having the debt paid off if they keep doing what they're doing. But, it will be a long and arduous road and is going to put them way behind on retirement savings. If you love your job and don't mind working until your 65, that's fine, but he's probably getting a little anxious staring at his low to no retirement savings, and 30 years of working while his wife sits at home. I think this is why he refuses to stop contributing towards retirement. He doesn't want to work forever and probably feels like he will be without any help from his wife.

I just don't agree with Dave's view. Like he said, toure going to NOT do one of them... I truly believe SHE wanted that house more than he did. So, with that, if SHE wants that house soooo badly (proven by the statement 'We bought the house that we're going to die in.') go back to work and help finance the house and lessen the stress on your husband... Teamwork Makes the Dream Work! Dave seems to sympathize with the women more often than not. She told on herself when she said "He's more of the nerd and I'm the free spirited one." Translation, he's a planner and doer and I'll think 'we'll just figure it out instead of having a plan and sticking to it.' Dave you really have to do better on picking up on the clues. And o believe that 'surprise 4th child' was only a "surprise" to the husband. She planned for it but he didn't want another child. Bottom line, I just don't feel like she's giving the COMPLETE story.

I agree. Reading between the lines of her conversation it clearly sounds as if SHE was the one who was determined to move into this house. With that and a new 4th child the husband is stressed out trying to pull all of the weight. $100-120K is good money but not with a $2700 mortgage, 90K in student loans and 4 kids to support. Now he does need to hold off on his 401K contributions temporarily until the household income increases. However, the wife seems content just staying home taking care of the kids without doing anything else. At the least she could try to find a way to work out of the home. (Online or otherwise) Even an extra $1000-1500 a month would help considerably.

You're making some baseless accusations. We have NO IDEA who wanted the house and SURPRISE BABIES do happen! You have basically just completely blamed the women here without any knowledge or fact checking. She said she is willing to go back to work, she could have called and said I would really like to stay at home but my husband doesnt want to but she didn't! Nobody put a gun to his head to buy this house, his a big boy and could have said no. I wish I would have heard what she does for a living so they could make a good choice on wether it would even be worth it for her to go back. If she makes under 50K then no point--> day care for 4 kids + taxes means she wont be taking much home anyway. Personally I could never be a stay at home mom (boring) but I saw how much better my childhood was compared to some of my friends whose parents were never around. If you want marriage and kids this conversation needs to happen BEFORE. Cause as we all know (and dont you dare act blind to it) women who work still do the majority of child rearing.

I feel like this woman wasn't telling the whole story. Maybe her husband is stressed about his 401k because they're going into debt. It is. If I was the husband, I'd be nervous, too! I would not be able to take a "chill pill", because around 1/2 of my income goes to house payment/insurance/utilities. That's too high. I don't blame the caller for wanting to stay at home with 4 (presumably small) children until they're a little older, but she needs to be realistic (and not overly optimistic about her husband's possible career progression). Dave is way too soft on female callers. Her husband works in finance, so he should know that they're 'house poor.' In addition, as a mature couple, a conversation should be had about long-term, effective, and possibly permanent birth control. No more 'surprise' babies!

It takes a really good income to offset the additional tax burden plus daycare, additional work expenses (professional attire, vehicle wear and tear, staff expenses such as party and gift contributions, and the loss of savings from making meals from scratch and focused time on coupon and sale shopping). And why place an infant in daycare when you have an income of over $110,000? Is missing milestones worth luxury living? If they can't make $110,000 stretch, sell the house. Husband is making $100,000 plus bonuses but instead of enjoying it, he'll be working to the day his back gives out or he goes postal. Whichever comes sooner. That's another fallen comrade who fell for society's biggest scam. Also "surprise" 4th child. He needs to get a "surprise" vasectomy. Should have actually done it after the 3rd child if they did not plan on having more children. It'd be significantly cheaper than the "surprise" they got coming now.

Husband wants to invest and pay off debt. Wife wants to not work and pay off debt and live in her "dream home" at 2700 per month. A house payment you can't afford, she needs to go back to work. I think this is the first time I disagree with Dave. I heard this call differently. What I heard is Princess Lisa doesn't want to go back to work even on a short term basis to help get out of the financial hole they're in, for which she has been partially responsible. How much of the $90,000 in student loans is for her degree? Why did you borrow the money to get a degree if you wanted to stay home? $2700 a month mortgage payment? Husband is pulling down a 6 figure income, trying to get the family in a solid financial position, and she doesn't want to go back to work because her heart wants to stay at home. Now who's being ridiculous? Use your degree and go back to work. If you can make $50,000 a year you can apply it all to the student loans and have them paid off in 2 years.

Lol I don’t get why I see so many guys whining about him telling a woman she doesn’t have to get a job. We all know Dave is a conservative Christian old-fashioned guy, he’s pretty straightforward about his beliefs. I don’t agree with all of them but I know what I’m getting, not surprised at all by his answer. He believes that if a family can afford to do it, it’s good to have traditional gender roles where the mom stays home with the kids. If you want to hear someone who believes differently watch someone else. I think the thing that’s so insulting is the insinuation that because she’s at home she must be lazy - she has four kids! I’m sure she’s very busy, caring for children, home, taking all those little life tasks off her husband’s plate is a full time job to do well, let’s not play like that has no value! He got cut off before he could ask her expected income but the other big point is the huge expense of childcare, she would need to make at least her childcare expenses back and then some for it to be worth it to leave your small children with strangers.

Why are people so mad at her for not wanting to get a job? She just had a baby. Taking care of a newborn is major work (plus recovering from childbirth and breastfeeding)! She’s not making money, but she IS working. Plus, daycare for four young kids (one of whom is an infant) would likely cost more than she could earn.
