Hey kids, it's your BLOOZ BUDDY Uncle Ben Eller, and my blues playing sucks! Maybe my buddy ‪@coreycongilio‬ can help me out? I hooked up with him for a lesson at ‪@sweetwater‬ Gearferst 2023, and I'm bringing you all along for the ride!
In this lesson, Corey shows me his approach to jazzing up his blues playing with arpeggios, passing tones, chromatics, and more. There's so much good stuff to learn here, Corey is a MASTER of playing over these changes! Get into it!
We are both playing through Boss Katana's, with guitars provided by the Sweetwater Gear Exchange! I found me a lovely Tom Anderson here that nearly came home with me... so nice.
Enjoy, and grab that bonus lesson + backing track on my Patreon page today!!!

One of the most compelling things about this video for me is the ease of which both of you know the fretboard, theory, and chords. Fascinating stuff, as I struggle to arpeggiate the first inversion of a Cm scale...

Thank you ,thank you thank you ! This was a real treat. I am a guy who learned by ear as a kid (at age 9, watching my biological Dad (lol), my uncles and cousins sit around playing guitar and drinking every time they got together) I developed some bad habits guitar wise and now at age 57, I am diving into uncharted territory. I discovered your channel around 3 years ago. I never knew the mechanics of alternate picking, true arpeggios etc. I always played from the gut. It sucked in a way though because my "guitar heroes" (Jimi, Ritchie Blackmore, Jerry Reed, Eddie, Jan Ackerman, Terry Kath, Steve Howe, Roy Clark etc) seemed so untouchable to me. I always wanted to grasp the concepts and structures that you provide on your channel. I apologize for the long winded post...I just wanted to say thank you so much for the heart felt effort that you provide on your channel. You are a class act, sir!

I need more of this kind of a lesson. I’ve played for over 35 years and I’ve won guitar contests and been known as a good metal/rock player. But I say that knowing I absolutely suck when it comes to so many areas of playing. For instance I never really loved the blues so I am so very lacking in this area. Whenever someone began a blues progression I go from a seemingly good guitar player to a day one beginner in an instant. It’s something that has plagued my playing for years. It’s not that I want to be known as some amazing blues player necessarily because it’s just not in my blood to concentrate on that style. But I think I could expand my playing greatly by becoming more comfortable in this vein. I’d probably enjoy this style more too by being able to speak the language better. Never stop learning everyone! Great video.

I've been a rock/metal player for nearly 40 years and, as I got older, I realized my playing was getting less metal and more blues. I'd always appreciated blues players but I was all about speed and sweeping and on and on. Suddenly guys like Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan to Jared James Nichols and Corey were putting a smile on my face more than Jason Richardson, Tim Henson or Tosin Abasi. Just getting old I guess. 😉

Here's the theory that'll open up your blues understanding. Look at the notes of your 1-4-5 A7 blues progression. They all contain 1,3,5,m7 notes. In each chord you'll see a tritone between the 3rd and m7 and they are all within a semitone of each other. Chord 1 C# and G, slide that shape down a semitone C and F# that's chord 4. If you slide up a semitone to D and G# that's chord 5. When playing through the changes target the m7 note moving down a semitone when the chord changes to D7. You've gone from G (m7th in A7) to F# (3rd in D7). This 7th to 3rd movement is key to flowing naturally through the changes. You can do the same moving from chord 1 to chord 5. Try G and slide up to G# again you've gone from m7th to 3rd.

6:53 - actually you can find it in other traditional - "anchient" rooted - music where the instrumental version is naturally grown out from the simple, only singed traditional folklore, without any education. Most of the bands - whats have nothing to do with blues - never heard, so tis not coming from there - plays major chords under minor melodies, and lot of the times the chords don't really have a functional connection - because the do all by ear, and they only know the song. So the chords are coming from the song, they play a simplier version of the melody, with the strongest overtones (what generates a major chord) for example, an A minor pentatonic song, has A, C, D, E and G - or if its not that pentatonic, even can have a B somewhere, all major. And the blue notes like between the major minor 3rd or between the diminished 5th and the perfect 5th are there too in the melodies, as these are coming from the physical nature of the sounds. That's why you can find these in Bartoks music, for example, as he was really into these type of music. And didn't really experienced blues or jazz.
