It was amazing how she repeated about being grateful in the end to show how gratefullness is something that grows within children with the parents actions instead of being forced upon or reminded of like she was.

Exactly, thank you so much for picking up on that. The Gratitude I have now in people understanding more deeply about the experience of adoption is not the same type of gratitude I was expected to have growing up.

Being a transracial adoptee this hit me so hard. She talked about something being wrong when on the surface everything is fine has been one of my depression struggles for years. Hearing her voice all these struggles, similar ones that I went through but didn't really tell anyone because the wouldn't understand or made me feel guilty for feeling made me cry.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I think about adoption issues frequently. While I always admire the courage and commitment of adoptive parents, I also feel heartbroken for the adopted kids. Even adoption within your race is not easy, not to mention transracial ones. Why do kids have to go through this in the first place? Of course it is better than not being adopted, but still traumatic.
@SaraJones-InclusionPro4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, hopefully this generates some ideas for solutions such as 1) how do we build economic stability so children do not have to be adopted in the first place, and 2) if they must be adopted, how do we create emotionally safe environments for children to adapt to their new circumstances and even stay connected with their families of origin. Children who are adopted do not want people to feel bad for them. The economic circumstances and environmental circumstances they are raised in are very much out of their control.

Amazing story, it's such a large and small world at the same time. It should be made so kids in this situation to be shown about their background so they can identify more easily. What a smart father as well.
@SaraJones-InclusionPro4 жыл бұрын
Yes having your identity and background erased is tough for so many adoptees. There has been so much shame tied to parents who have their children adopted outside of their families. My father was smart, yet it was a very unpopular thing to do. I am grateful compared to so many adoptees who search for years (decades in some cases) to find their families.

Even though most adoptions happen when children are still babies, I think that some memories prior to adoption remain with them throughout their lives, and their new families need to know how to deal with it.
Yes and really I was 3 years old. Many three year old children are quite verbal and intelligent at that age. I am sure I knew what was happening.

Transracial adoption doesn't include the adoption of a child of one ethnicity by a parent of another ethnicity if the 2 ethnicities fall under the same race. In fact, in the adoptee communities, Asians adopted by Caucasian families do not like Asians adopted by Non-Caucasian families.
@SaraJones-InclusionPro3 жыл бұрын
Yes I believe everyone agrees that transracial specifically refers to when a child of one race is adopted by a parent of a different race. No one disputes that. I am not sure where your observation of conflict between adoptees who have different adoptive experiences comes from. But my hope is that we will be empathetic to all adoption journeys as being unique to the individual.
