Here is a tour of my apartment here on Svalbard. Svalbard is a work camp in the purest form. It’s run by tourism, and since living and working here is visa free, there’s workers from all over the world. Most of anywhere to live is already rented out by the companies that own all the businesses. So when you work here, you will essentially sublease your apartment from whichever company you work for!
When I arrived in Longyearbyen to work on Svalbard, I was picked up at the airport and driven to my very own 1 bedroom apartment. I was handed the keys like “This is your place.”
The rent here is 9,500kr.

It's interesting how it was recorded at 1:30 am yet it looks like 1:30 pm given how bright it is. That is the magic of summer in svalbard with it's polar day. In the winter, especially around December 21, it would have been dark even at 1 pm. That is a nice apartment if only I could live there.

Lol I was in Fairbanks AK for work and after a couple weeks it was 0 degrees and I’m going around outside in flip flops lol it’s the dry air that does it. It’s wild.

A Brooklyn boy playing dominoes in Svalbard! I live in The Bronx. Right now, I'm reminded of the older men who play dominoes in the park by Yankee Stadium all day & night in the summer time.

Just came across your video. Yes! Toilet seat down when you flush. My friend stayed with me this weekend and she would flush the toilet and then put the seat down....drove me nuts because it defeats the entire purpose! Anyway, from Toronto and dying to visit Svalbard

Central heating is not on gas, but water filled piles that is heated by gas or electricity (depending on what type you have)

Svalbard is it’s own land with its own rules. If you’ve never been to visit or more so live there you wouldn’t understand how it’s different from most things and social norms of Scandinavia. 😊😇

No not really. Because Longyearbyen at its core is a work camp, if you can’t work, you can’t live there. All the housing is owned and rented by the companies and then you sublease it from them. So you couldn’t just move there and get a place. And you can’t build anything either because all the land is owned by the government.

Do you have to share with other people? One of the biggest things I hate about seasonal work in the usa is sharing the place with 6-10 other people also working the same seasonal job

I hear ya, and in those cases, from my experience, you’re sharing a home with those 6-10 other people and there’s bunk beds in the room etc. My video here was a tour of MY 1-Bedroom apartment. Who would I be sharing it with? Where would they sleep? There’s only one bed in there! 😂 To genuinely answer your question and not be funny, No, I didn’t have to share with other people. I lived alone in my 1 Bedroom apartment. Just me. But I also didn’t have a seasonal contract, I had a permanent one. I have been in some other people’s apartments and there’s 2, 3, and 4 bedroom apartments that some people do share with their friends or random others. It all depends on your contract and what you ask for and what they have available. 😇

@@Robdoesitall Thanks for the lengthy reply. I've been in places with one bed but the bathrooms had to be shared so just making sure. Sharing a bathroom with 9 other people who all want to shower first thing in the am when you really have to go is no fun! I think I misunderstood one of your videos because I could've sworn you said you were there for seasonal work in your job vid. I didn't realize you are there permanently!

Your heater isn’t gas exactly, gas heats water then that hot water is piped through all the heaters in the house

You get your housing from your employer! So wherever you get a job will provide you a place to live. That’s how I got my apartment. 🙌🏾

Yes, the second floor of a two floor building. Rent is 9,500 NOK.

There’s always work. But pay is different for different jobs and your experience. There’s no way to tell you how much workers make.

Thank you! It’s a sliding scale based on experience and skills of course. Personally I made 214kr an hour, but another bartender I knew made 180kr an hour. You’ll have to Google the conversions to your currency.

There will be no problem. You don’t need a visa to work on Svalbard. You will need a tourist visa to get to Norway though.
