My take on the Lamy 2000: I don't say this lightly - it's the best thing they make

Related video - comparison of the Waterman Carene and the Lamy 2000
• The Waterman Carene is...
Lamy is the brand that got me into fountain pens. They have so many iconic products. That said, I'm fully convinced the 2000 is their best product, and the odd one out in their lineup.
FYI - I misspoke somewhere in there - my first gold nib pen was a Lamy 2000, not a Lamy Safari

I have had my Lamy 2000 for over five years. The first year I had it, like you, I thought it had a narrow sweet spot. I finally learned how to adjust the nib ever so slightly, and it writes in all positions perfectly. I have many many pens, from $25-$1,200, including the Vanishing point. (And it too had a very narrow sweet spot until I adjusted the nib!) I find the Lamy 2000 to among the best most consistent writers that I own. And also, like you, I am a big fan of Pilot. Having essentially everything in their lineup. Same with Sailor. What I like about this Lamy 2000 is its quality, its large ink capacity, and its size and weight. I challenge anyone to find its equivalent in quality, in something that one can actually easily carry. Quite frankly, many of my pens, like the 143, the King of Pens, the Pilot 845, etc.etc…don’t make it in my shirt pocket because they are too big! They won’t fit in my pocket, and are huge to clip on the placket of my shirt. The same with many of the heavy steel pens. Even the Vanishing point can be bulky. That is not the case with the 2000. It just fits and writes like a dream!

This is my all-time favorite pen! I own three of them, and keep thinking about getting more nib widths. My favorite is the fine. It's a wonderful daily writer. It's a pen that leaves a nice line and which truly disappears in my hand.

I use the Lamy 2000 fountain pen, daily. I am surprised people do not spend the time to learn to use it after spending $200. How can you say baseball or alpine skiing isn’t fun if you never put in the effort to master it to a level where it becomes enjoyable? :)

I have three of them simply because I thought I lost one, replaced it, and found the lost pen a year later. People will have to pry them from my cold, dead, hands. Even the Safari is hard to beat.

Thanks for a very good and different review of what is still an excellent pen, 57 years on. Basically, to me it looks like a typical 1960s pen, except for the fact that the body is made from Makrolon (which was a first). However, the shape/design was not that original for the time. It was an evolution of the Lamy 27 and 99 models (nib and feed) and the styling was, arguably, heavily influenced by the body shape of pens like the 1960 Parker 45 and the Montblanc pens introduced in 1959/60 like the Meisterstuck 12, 14, 22, 24, 32 and 34 (which were produced throughout the 1960s). The Lamy 2000 was originally marketed at the middle aged business man type as an alternative to some of these other pens. What is quite interesting is that Lamy then made the Profil pens (models 80, 81 and 86) in the 1970s, which were very similar to the 2000, but the company addressed the issue of the tapering grip on the 2000 and made the pen a bit slimmer. It got rid of the Lamy 2000 "paunch" in the middle above the section. The Profil also has an exposed nib and straight grip section - Jinhao has copied its design, IMO. Anyway, I really enjoyed the video, so many thanks.

What a great review! Wow! I just wish I can buy another Lamy 2000 some day in the future! I had one for many years… and boy… that pen was loved! I liked it so much. Used it for everything. Sadly, I passed through a thought situation and had to let it go… after 10 years now I still dream of having one again. I completely agree with you about the quality feel and overall experience of having one of them. And it’s name does justice to it… Lamy 2000 - a once “modern” pen of the future, became the present and still is a product of our own time. Superb!

I own two 2000’s for at least 15 years, one is still in original box, brand new(unused). I used the first one quite alot and thought it was a fine writer until I had a problem with the filling mechanism , I sent to the factory for their claimed lifetime warranty//repair which they refused to honor. I am happy to learn that Lamy has recently been sold to Mitsubishi Pencil Company, hoping that maybe I can get a more honorable warranty response from them.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s easy to take apart, and it’s meant to be taken apart for many years, unlike a lot of other pens that can be disassembled a couple times before they crack. The cap seal on the 2000 is perfect. I’ve never had one dry out on me. That’s huge for a pen you intend to carry and use every day. There aren’t a lot of modern feeds that can keep up with a really wet nib - the 2000’s does it easily. It writes like a vintage pen. I got my first fountain pen (a charcoal Safari) when I was 16, and saved for two years for the 2000 in fine when I was eighteen. I’m thirty now and I’ve never had a single problem out of that fine 2000. I own four Lamy 2000s now, the others in medium, broad, and double broad. If I lost all my pens, including my expensive ones like my Pelikan M1005 and M805 Stresemanns, I’d start over with another Lamy 2000 and probably stick with that.

The Lamy 2000 is my all time favorite pen at any price level. A beautiful writing experience. I can’t wait to write with it. A powerhouse writer, with mid-century modern vibes that doesn’t make you feel like a medieval scribe when you are in a professional setting. I love the look, plus the hooded nib allows it to stay uncapped for a very long time. I own two, fine and medium. Each is literally a pleasure to write with, depends how much ink I feel like putting down and how tight my writing space/application is. The Makrolon body feels nice and warm as you use it. Nice in winter. Little details like that make it very special.

Wow I agree with you on everything. The nib experience and thin section were deal breakers for me though. I want to like it so bad though for all the points you mention. I wish they made an oversize version. I would buy that and then take it to a nib meister. The xf I tested was horribly scratchy. The Pilot VP (although not great on aesthetics) has a nice nib experience - super smooth and shock absorber-like.

Oh, Lamy 2000... I have one, EF/macrolon, for more than 10 years and agree with your opinion. Mine has a very rough history due to outrageous customer service of Lamy. However, it's my third best pen in my collection. I don't mean here "most expensive", "most used" or "favorite" but overall score - design, usability etc. On sweet spot. For years I didn't even know they existed. And mine has an EF nib they say most prone to those. Well, you may say I used three EF nibs and didn't find sweet spots on any. Despite my very low esteem of Lamy as a company 2000 is their excuse to go on in my opinion.

nitpick: @10:42 - it's a piston-knob, not a blind cap. Not many pens have blind caps these days. But I definitely agree the 2k is Lamy's best pen. It's the only pen of theirs I've inked in the last several years.

Love your channel and I share many of your opinions, including the preference for Japanese fountain pens. In regard to the Lamy 2000, I agree that the metal grip section isn't very comfortable for very long writing sections. However, I never hold it by its section while writing. I hold mine between the ink window and the metal section and I find it perfect , especially its girth, and I can write with it for hours on end. I admit I have never noticed any degrading of the writing experience due to the size of the nib when compared to longer nibs as mine does damper the impact of writing on the surface of the page as well as any Japanese pen that I own. Thanks for sharing.

As much as I love the Lamy 2000, I feel the comparison with the Parker 51 was a little unfair. That pen was designed thirty years before the LMM, and represented a true revolution in pen design.

to be fair the gold nib in the capless is still connected very far into the feed, One reason VP is bouncy is also the spring loaded mechanism for pushing and pulling the nib back, my Moonman A1 also feels a bit bouncy like you describe. and i can see the nib unit moving when i push it

I used to own this pen, maybe 30 years ago. The nib was far too wet for me. The EF nib I had wrote more like a broad. I understand that the nib has changed, but as you have shown the nib has a defined "sweet spot". That for me is the biggest downside. For me is an unforgiving pen. I do not quibble about the styling of the pen. It is very distinctive and something that Lamy should be proud of. That it is their flagship pen is understandable. Other companies have mimicked this model is more of a tribute to Lamy and should be seen in that manner, Yes, I have the MaJohn Ti500 which is as close to the metal 2000 as you can get. But I have to say the nib on the MaJohn is quite forgiving for someone who rolls their nibs, I do own the Lamy 2000 ballpoint that was made many years ago. That it is stamped with "Made in W. Germany" may offer a clue. Also the material of the body is different from recent models. I don't know if the Makrolon is different or that it was made with another material is unknown. The color is more of a dark brown than black. But is it a workhorse of a pen.

I've got 2 Sonnets, a pen which I only recently discovered. One has an 18K gold EF nib and the other a steel M. They both write really well and I think the build quality is excellent. The Lamy 2000 must be really well put together to beat the Sonnet but that nib kind of ruins it for me. I hate those barrels that taper down to a hooded nib, my fingers slide down to the nib with prolonged writing. I've got a little Sailor with a music nib which I quite like but is a bit hard. Also a Waterman Man 100 with an italic I've had for years and is razor sharp at the edges. Same for my Parker 75 with a medium italic nib also worn sharp over 40 years. My favourite, though , is my Sailor KOP ebonite with the King Eagle nib. That's my primary pen & the one I have with me all the time. It's the supercharged V12 of pens, it absolutely drinks ink. I have to keep a bottle with me all the time, I'll fill it maybe 2-3 times a day when I'm writing hard.

@@AryaOghuz i just don't see the reason. I just like to write in cursive with fine and extrafine nibs (actually most of my nibs/pens are vintage semiflex or flex nibs). In the old times pen manifacturers had a whole variety of nibs, from extra fine to stub, Italic, accountant... so I don't get the point to start from an extrafine that is actually a medium for Western calligraphy. That's why i would love to have a pelikan or a Lamy with finer nibs: just cause I love how they look...

Completely boring pen and brand. And you pretty much tanked your whole assertion that this is anything approaching a great pen when you state that the writing experience is less than satisfactory. What else is a pen for if not writing? Lamy's are pretty well made but absolute snoozers where writing and collectability are concerned.

I meant to say in the video - not sure if I did - writing experience is usually my top criteria for pens. That's why I have very bland versions of pens like the Sailor 1911L and KOP vs the more expensive, limited editions that write the same but have more interesting colors. However, in the case of the Lamy 2000, what makes it cool to me is the design and history. I really appreciate it for that. The writing experience is acceptable but not the highlight about this pen.
