I looked up the price of one of these marvelous pens. Gosh, I'd have to take out a mortgage in order to purchase one. I guess I'll have to settle for my bic.

My 146 is my favorite writing instrument. I treated myself in 1996. I also have 2 MB rollerballs, and a MB Dumas fountain pen, a Parker Centenniel Duofold, but the 146 is the one.

"Since this video posted, it's been the least viewed of all my videos." --> what do you expect, with a title like "Apparently nobody cares about the Parker Sonnet"? I also stumbled upon it just by accident.

The ergonomics and durability of the Safari seem to me to be an excellent and very logical match for the gold nib. The beauty of LAMY's easily interchangeable nibs is that you can test drive it on multiple form factor bodies and dial in what feels and performs the best for you. Now that the gold nib is closer to $125, it's probably a tad bit overpriced given its size, but it does deliver the goods for sure, and it def competes favorably with gold nibs from the other major brands.

What do you think about the LeGrand Solitaire, all metal fountain pen? Would it feel special with that weight and the beautiful designs they have on the Solitaire pens?

Thanks for the info! I'm newer to fountain pens. Would the Sonnet with an 18k nib typically have a better writing experience than most pens in the $80 price range?

Hard to say from video, but I think your pen hold is by default at a rather steep angle creating more force to get flex. It might not be possible, but lowering that angle should help with flex, if you can modify your grip slightly and get used to it. Good video, love the honesty and that you didn't review it RIGHT AWAY, but after much writing time.

The roller ball's barrel fits the fountain pen's section, right? I really want to get a roller ball just to replace the barrel on my fountain pen.

I have not tried the Platinum 3776, but my current everyday writer is a Pilot Custom Heritage 91 soft fine medium. I prefer flat finials, and the 91 is more comfortable to me than the 912 because the 912 is less balanced when posted, and the slight barrel step up interferes with where I place rest my thumb on the grip. The #10 nib SFM is something quite special, though. I bought my 91 from a Japanese small distributor, and it wrote perfectly right out of the box, so I would recommend people buying pens directly from Japan go with Pilots foremost, as I have purchased Sailors that had perfectly tuned nibs, nibs that wrote like nails, and nib tips that were over-polished and over-ground.

This is the single best fountain pen video I’ve ever seen. It introduced me to multiple pens that I had never heard of and peaked my interest. I would get the pilot Lucina but I’m having trouble finding one in the states. I do however plan on purchasing the pilot 1911 casual. I can’t find any other reviews on it so it’s great that you’re spreading awareness about such a great deal! Keep up the great work 👍

Surprisingly enough I had more quality control and consistency problems with Pilot rather than any of my Platinum pens. Platinum usually never dries out and the line is consistent with any ink at any direction. Custom 74 on the other hand is known to have flow issues with upstrokes while downstrokes are quite wet. Also most of my Pilot pens has tines way too tight from the factory and require some nib massaging before being good. I also had 3 different Pilot VP and all of them had singing nibs. Platinum and Sailor nibs are usually great from the factory.

i really like lamy Fountain Pens. But what i hate about them is, that even EF nibs are something like B on Kaweco or japanese pens.. And they vary a lot with line thickness from EF nib to EF nib

I recently received this seems. It seems that the cabochon (jewel) is loose, as well. Seems to just be a part of the pen’s design. Have you noticed if this being loose allows air through the top? Does the nib dry quicker than other Pilot’s?

Yours is one of only a handful of reviews for this pen which helped me make up my mind on this pen. I’ve managed to bag the last one on a site in europe at reduced price. I can’t seem to find it anywhere else so not sure if it’s been discontinued. Thanks

If this pen took the con-70 converter, it would easily be my favorite. The nib is simply is fantastic. I am no fan at all of the custom 74, I guess we all have our favorites, and my favorites all have steel nibs. Have used steel nibs for over 50 years at this point, and the only gold nib I care for is the one in the Waterman Carene. That nib is done right imo. Thanks for sharing. Jan.

As many others in the comments 😅 I also have all three. My comparison is not to easy as the my sailor is fine, the platinum is extra fine and the pilot soft fine, so they have not exactly the same purposes for me. Anyhow, it is the 3776 that I am reaching out for the most. Smooth as butter.

I had a silver Metropolitan, but gifted it to a family member. My biggest issues of the Metropolitan are the uncomfortable grip section, and the unbalanced posting experience. For a starter Pilot, besides the Kakuno, my number one option is either Pilot Prera, or the Explorer. I also like my Lamy Safari a lot, because it solves both the issues of grip comfort and balance while posted, and the Z24 converter is WAY better than the Con-40.

Lots of really good pens are made in Slovenia, the Faber Castell Hexo is made there too. That being said, from a company like Midori I would have expected more, couldn't they partner with a Japanese company like Platinum to make a pimped out Plaisir for their brand?

And, for about a quarter of the price, including shipping, you can get a highly reliable, well made, dip-tested Jinhao 82 with converter. For brushed steel with plastic, Wing Sung delivers the goods for way less than this "Midori". I've had to perform corrective surgery on one of my 601As, but the filling system is so much more interesting.

I have exactly the same problem than you with the 74. I like this pen but my fingers are always grabbing the threads. Reason why I almost always use my 823 instead. The 74 is a very good pen but not when you have larger hands.

I respectfully disagree with your comment about the Lamy steel nib. Firstly, there is a difference between the silver and black ones. I always use the black ones, they write smoother than the white ones. I put a 14kt nib on a Lamy LX. It does not write smoother than the black one, but it is less stiff than the black steel ones. There is little flex possible, but that doesn't matter to me as I prefer a stiff nib. Is it worth the investment? Depends what your preference is. My Lamy LX has now become a beautiful pen to look at, but I prefer to write with a black steel nib.

I have had the pen for a year and have given it once as a gift. Mine and the gift wrote well out of the box. It has a little feedback and is very stiff but a perfectly serviceable plastic pen. The body does feel cheap but it has held up so far. I do not carry it as an everyday carry. Ink wise, it does not like dry inks and shimmer was a nightmare. But a good normal to wet ink with or without sheen and it is fine. As the convertor gets close to empty it will have hard starts but that is the only time I have experienced that when using a wet ink. I agree, the silver ring is a pain to keep track of when cleaning.

I got one last year for CAD $ 50, I dropped it from my table and the plastic broke. Not impressed. I bought it because its Midori and because of its minimalistic looks., but would not recommend. I did like the "very Japanese style" packaging,. Fancy marketing got me again 😂
