I reflect on three points from this year’s “two sessions” (or Liang Hui 两会) that can help us understand how the Chinese government processes and implements policies, and the options available to China for strengthening its economy. Also, don't take the US for granted.

You’re right on your views of the Chinese government throwing good money and casting a wide net. But that tradition had been applied for thousands of years. That’s how China net the most talented folks in the country. Those folks are true geniuses.

I have no doubts that China will ride through the storm. The Chinese had an exceptional history, in terms of entreprenuership... money making is their religion.

EV consolidation in China is a normal process and it's healthy. Only the fittest survive. As for the property downturn was an proactive initiative by the Chinese government to burst the bubble before it got out of hand like in the US in 2008. The Chinese government is doing the right thing unlike the US just kick the can down the road. The property downturn is a good way to lower the price so that more people can afford housing. So now the government is moderating the property market by loosening some of the policies for those previously being priced out to buy house. Bumpy road but the government is doing an awesome job. Like you say, China is transparent and Xi said this before, house is for people to live and not to speculate. People should know what to do and not go against the direction.

China is more transparent on the economics than other 6:36 countries front..as for governance it is the same as.other countries like the US..UK and EU are also not transparent..they will always use the coin term of national security...classified information .... The Chinese word for crisis is Wei Ji... the wei represents difficulty or disturbances and Ji means opportunity.. when there is crisis an opportunity is also available..

Emmanuel I just came across your channel. I want to say thank you so much for this. I'm not anywhere near as well versed in these topics as you are, but I love learning. Also, you basically gave a lecture on the key elements of this year's Two Sessions on the street, which I don't know if people appreciate how hard that is! I look forward to watching all your past videos and future ones too!

China implemented 20%equity requirements in the Ant Financial $380b IPO was a good move to stop wild financialisations that could have created another bubble worse than the real-estate. The average buyer puts up 30% equity in a Chinese real-estate purchase from the beginning. In the US it is speculative at almost nothing around 2%

You're great. Emmanuel. This presentation is such a unbiased nuance view of economics for a lay person and unlike the nay sayers and those who do not have an insight of how the chinese economic model works your presentation here is so factual and you actually quote Keyu who I admire as well. Your take of China's troubles and the chinese market gives one a more balance view of how to interpret the chinese stock market. Am actually impressed you had Barney Frank's write your books opening line,even though he is no economist, lol.

Thank you for a very insightful video. Your comment on the development of the US car industry from the time of Henry Ford reminds me of the history of the personal computer industry from the first IBM and Apple personal computer until today. The shake down in that industry saw the disappearance of many small computer making outfits ending with just two systems today. Looking forward to your forthcoming videos.

Insightful as always. Grounded and Holistic assessment of the realities on the ground in China. I must respectfully disagree with the view that pouring any amount of money will drive innovation. I like to believe constraint (of resources, funds, of competition) is what drives true innovation.

Funding EV and AI, are not just about EV and AI. As one 'refine' a tech, one creates 'sub innovations' for other fields. These 'sub innovation' creates another branch for research. Thus, chip needs to get smaller, wifi needs to get faster ... not because one "need" them, but it 'motivates' new innovation creation. Thus, "new productive forces" Tech innovation (the 'innovation' part) is probabilistic, try and error process. The "try and error" needs money and you want as many people doing the 'same thing' (independently) to 'random' hit the 'correct path'.

I like your video, your thoughts are refreshingly balanced for these times. I believe China has problems but they are all within the competence of the government. China learned how ruthlessly brutal the US and Europe is a long time ago, so many of China's policies are a direct result of this threat. Not fully opening its capital markets, the BRI to prevent USSR type isolation, China's own social media to minimise sedition, promoting tourism to challenge western media, etc. I see the property issue as a managed recession to reduce prices and too big to fail risk. Considering US tariffs, sanctions on high tech businesses, coups, rebel attacks on BRI projects, stock market divestment by US finance, and US threat of war to scare Fdi away, China's economy is doing remarkably well. My biggest fear is a neocon trap similar to Ukraine/Russia. The neocons will have a Taiwan puppet declare independence, China reacts, the west seizes assets and implements pre-prepared sanctions etc without a shot being fired, and a whole host of new problems for China.

I am from india. Chinese already occupied India's (aksa chin) land in 1962 war. and they also want to occupy arunachal pradesh. That belongs to india. China is saying arunachal pradesh is south tibet that belongs to china. Tibet is illegally occupied by china. And china also want eastern ladakh in northern Himalayas that belongs to india. Now they are buliding military base in maldives In South indian sea. Maldives and sri lanka trapped by China's debt trap. You don't know nothing. Go and search about it and learn something about it.

how come you ignored that china is putting a trillion dollars yuans into a new special bond, for growth !
@emmanueldanielauthor
@emmanueldanielauthor 5 ай бұрын
Yes it was on my mind. The central government will be lending this 1 trillion RMB to provincial governments to issue as bonds instead of outright grants. Keeps them on a tight leash. They can theoretically issue an unlimited amount of bonds as long as it is in local currency that they can manage through good monetary policy and let the pension funds pick up as income.

Since you mentioned a proposal on rural property and rural-to-urban migration in China, I'd recommend you search for videos or books from 温铁军. He is one of the well-known experts in this area in China, with many videos about related policies, etc. These materials are mostly in Chinese; based on your pronunciation of the names, I assume you know Chinese well.

Interesting background views on Threadneedle Street with everyone going about their business. In China, the social contract with the people and the economic contract with the private sector under the opening up and reform era has become history. Just as the establishment of the Bank of England was created from desperate circumstances, it may take several seasons of economic and fiscal failure of increasing magnitude to create the desperate conditions needed to eventually give rise to a future dawn in the Middle Kingdom
