Welcome come and join me in my van i am a everyday van delivery driver that enjoys talking politics in my van to share with all of you guys who are kind enough to listen
Sir Keir Starmer has promised to build a "government of service" after becoming the UK's first Labour prime minister since 2010.
I give my thoughts on voter turnout, vote share, the lost tory seats Penny Mordaunt, Jacob Rees Mogg, Liz Truss all losing there seats.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street after his party's landslide election win, he pledged to restore trust in politics and “navigate away to calmer waters”.
And appealing directly to voters who did not back his party, he vowed to put “country first" and govern “unburdened by doctrine”.

Though given that Labour isn't going to change anything, with sticking to austerity but with a shiny new name of fiscal rules, Starmer won't change a damn thing. Take not scrapping the two child benefit cap as an example, but yet there's money for Trident. The sunlit uplands are in sight and brighter than ever before! (Just don't stare directly at them 😆😅)

As an older guy who has spent my time since youth opposing the far right , never a truer word has been spoken “just make things better for everyone “. Whether I’ve mellowed over the years or just becoming wiser I very much believe this…. I remember a few years back being asked by a lecturer type person whilst opposing an EDL march “why do you cover your faces, you’re as bad as them” to which a mate replied “because we don’t go home away from these fascists, we work and live alongside them , our kids go to school with their kids” …. My point is for the best part we’re all in the same boat, they wouldn’t be foot soldiers for the likes of farage if things were better for everyone …. When things are bad the snake oil peddlers can sell their wares ….. make things better and they can’t 👍

After 60+ years of living in a Tory town, my Labour vote finally counted. I'm looking forward, with optimism, to a period of slow but sure improvement in people's lives. I very nearly had a tear in my eye, listening to Starmer's speech. It's a real shame the LibDems didn't make it to second place, but they had a good showing. If Reform weren't a thing, they probably would have clinched it.

Love to see just a regular guy talking sense, especially in my city (as much as a I love Brighton, sometimes folks can be a little unrealistic). Tories out; wonderful, but Labour's majority is built on sand. Very worried regarding the positioning of Reform as second against Labour in many constituencies. Those on the left of Labour need to unite and provide an effective alternative to Farage. Our electoral system does not favour multiple independents and small parties. The Greens did well and are by far the strongest grouping on the left.

If Starmer and Labour can achieve some goals in improving life in the north, I think it'll take a LOT of the wind out of the rightwing. The Tories' obsession with reducing the size and role of government has backfired spectacularly, leaving them politically irrelevant and facing electoral oblivion. They've essentially engineered their own political demise through their bat shit ideological commitment to a smaller state. Their cuts to public services have created crises in healthcare, education, and social care, turning voters against them. Austerity measures have damaged the economy and increased inequality, destroying their reputation for economic competence. The Tories are facing their worst crisis in modern history. They're not just losing an election; they're losing their relevance as a major political force. Their recovery, if possible, will likely take years.

The vote share was a reflection of the tactical voting and Labour campaigning all over the Tory heartlands at the expense of their safe seats. The low turnout corresponds roughly to the voter suppression. In 1992 2 million Labour voters were missing from the ballot due to the poll tax, direct voter suppression was supposed to pull the same trick on Thursday, and it did again work because if you add in those disenfranchised Labour voters the Tories would have got half the seats they ended on and would now be finished.

How the day after feels like Boxing Day. It was so true as the big day was the day before, but life isn't back to normal the next day. On Wednesday, I did some last-minute laundry and grocery shopping to tide me over for three days as I knew I would be busy on polling day and tired on Friday. I bought snacks and convenience food. I had plans to attend an event on Friday but it rained, and I watched the proceedings all morning as most of the results were in by 5 am. Then I had a nap in the afternoon and in the evening it rained. Then having to catch up on tasks that I didn't have time for in the election campaign and then wondering what to do with my life. Places to visit that I couldn't during the pandemic and then in the early autumn of 2022 the long campaign for the General Election started as we thought one could have been called at any time from then until January 2025.

I think the low turnout was mostly tory voters who couldn't bring themselves to vote for a different party, but still didn't want to vote for this government. 557,040 less voted Labour this year, but that's dwarfed by the 7,151,985 less who voted Tory. My nearest tory constituency, Southport, voted Labour for the first time since the constituency was made in 1885. My nan's constituency voted Labour for the first time ever too. No tories in Wales or Cornwall. Some remain in Scotland, but they lost the seat with Scottish Tory leader in to the SNP. Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss and Jacob Rees-Mogg all gone which is amazing. As well as George Galloway. And Jeremy Corbyn managed to keep his seat by a very wide margin. Sinn Fein have the majority in Northern Ireland as well, replacing DUP. It's Labour in both Wales and Scotland of course. Finally, this is not only a record loss for the tories, previous record was 1906, but a record win for Libdems, previous 2005. I'm cautiously optimistic for this Labour government. Can't be worse than the tories, but how much will they achieve in the next four years?

I’m sure he’ll give the people his full attention 100% Doesn’t leave much time for anything else. Based on his previous tenure as an MEP with the second lowest voting record and poor attendance for fisheries and farming meetings, we’ll see how that pans out over the next five years for the people of Clacton. If he doesn’t do his duty to them he’ll be out on his arse and the people will feel really aggrieved about deform. He looked almost disappointed when the result came in….😂t

Fantastic opening speech by Starmer, to be fair. Really knocked it out of the park. When it comes to fewer votes than in 2017/2019, it's because Starmer's Labour have actually been strategic and understand what's needed for FPTP. Corbyn's Labour were just hanging around campaigning in safe London seats, it was dimwitted. Turns out you need to capture some swing voters to get in power.

In that case,I guess reform has been canvassing in our area (Arundell and South Downs) cos when I went to vote, I could spot the type buzzing around the polling station. Sure enough, they got 18% or thereabouts of the vote in our area and the tory managed to hang on.....we voted tactically.....guess you can't win 'em all😢. @FRESHNESSSSSS Obviously that's true. A majority of 170 is a bit more than "over the line." It's phenomenal. The only thing is, I wonder whether in order to BEAT the Tory party, they have to BECOME the Tory party, in everything but name. Because frankly that's what I believe Starmer's Labour is.
@FRESHNESSSSSS
@FRESHNESSSSSS Ай бұрын
@@AndriyValdensius-wi8gw I think that's quite reductive - Labour are still a centre-left party but you absolutely have to capture some of the centre-right in an election to ever get in power - this is a broadly right-of-centre country and always has been. The only way to enact left-wing policies is through infiltration - which is what Blair's government did well (despite what I think of Blair on the whole).

It is lucky that we don't have PR - Lib Dems got 71 seats on 3.5M votes - under PR Reform would have more seats. As far as I am concerned luckily at the moment something is right. Look at our system like the football league if Arsenal win every game 1-0 they win the league vs Liverpool who win the odd game 3 - 0 and draw the rest 3 - 3. Yes Liverpool score more games but didn't get the 3 points for the games they draw. You are right that improving people's lives will encourage people not to vote for fascists like Farage.

You’re right to point out that Labour got less votes than under Corbyn - (9.7m votes 10.2m) HOWEVER that is a reflection of the overall turnout being far less than 2019. The Tories got near 14m votes in 2019, only 6.8m this year. So the story is A) lots of people stayed away and B) Reform picked up 4m mostly Tory voters from 2019. Labour need to give people a reason to vote adding for them in 2029 to get the turnout. The Tories however are in real trouble - the ‘big beasts’ left are nearly all Hard Right and the public has shown they don’t want that. So the Tories, if they try to go back to the centre, will face division and resignations from the likes of Braverman, Patel and Badenoch. They will almost certainly try to merge Reform with the Tories, asking Farage to lead. This will cause even more turmoil - Reform could pose an existential threat to the Tories, they don’t know which direction to go, and, until they unite, they will be unelectable

Weird electoral system. But you need to win seats, you don't need to win by huge majorities. So with tactical voting, you can be very efficient with your targets. As they say in football, you can only beat the team in front of you. A win is a win, using the system that you have to work with.

Not my post but i believe the figures to be correct and i generally agree with his sentiment Labour share of UK vote: 33.7% Labour share of UK seats: 63.4% Contrast this with Scotlands results: SNP share of the vote in Scotland: 29.9% SNP share of Scotlands MP seats: 15.8% Labour won a sweeping victory in the whole of the UK, and with an almost identical vote share in Scotland the SNP suffered a crushing defeat. Stepping back a little further and look at all of the parties in the UK and what they should have gotten under a more fair voting scheme: (Excluding Irish, Welsh and Scottish exclusive parties) Labour: Share: 33.7% should mean 219 seats, reality: 412 seats They got 188% of the seats they should have gotten. Conservatives: Share: 23.7% should mean 154 seats, reality: 121 seats They got 79% of the seats they should have gotten. Liberal democrats: Share: 12.2% should mean 79 seats, reality: 71 seats Actually good result, or close enough. They got 90% of the seats they should have gotten. Reform UK: Share: 14.3% should mean 93 seats, reality: 4 seats They got 4% of the seats they should have gotten. Green Party: Share: 6.8% should mean 44 seats, reality: 4 seats They got 9% of the seats they should have gotten. I'm sure people will celebrate reform getting such a pitiful share of the seats despite such a large vote share but I'll counterpoint that maybe if our voting system wasn't so broken they wouldn't have picked up such a massive protest vote in the first place. These parties have voting reform in their manifestos: (Excluding national parties except the SNP just because I don't have time to check them all) SNP Reform UK Liberal Democrats The Green party These parties don't: Labour Conservatives Anyone else spot the pattern? For as long as the two largest parties are content to swap sweeping majorities back and forwards with

Another serious issue in all politics and i personally believe whatever voting system we use. Unless this issue is fixed, no voting system will truly work and that's money in politics. We have lobbyists not just in parliament officially and legally bribing MP's. Party donors and private donors, if businesses, business leaders and rich people are allowed to donate vast sums of money. Then who are the MPs going to listen to when deciding on what legislation/rules to put in place when they gain power. Are they going to do stuff that benefits the public or the big money donors. Then there's the speaking engagements after they've retired. What do people really think those money making tours are for. They're rewards for putting in place rules/legislation that benefits the businesses that give them those lucrative speaking engagements. Then there's the seats on boards of companies that pay them thousands of pounds for 1 or 2 days of work a year. Unfortunately until all this corruption has been fixed and the voting system changed, we the public will still be getting bent over and laughed at at all future elections

There has to be some investigation into why 40% of the electorate failed to vote. Were they traditional Tory voters who knew the Tories didn't deserve their vote, but could not bring them selves to vote otherwise? Starmer's frst job is to ensure as many as possible can survive the coming winter. Start giving money back to local government where the Tories deliberately starved them for resources. Reduce energy bills (nationalise), and ensuring people can afford to buy food and not rely on charity. Then nationalise water so those bills come down and money stops flowing into the pockets of rich foreign investors.

They received well over a million more votes than LibDems, but LibDems got more NINETEEN times as many MPs. System needs looking at, doesn't it? Must admit I was pleased Reform didn't get as many seats as they might have done.
